It didn't have a lot of pockets for stashing business essentials, so I was hesitant, but I have found that the top pocket has been the biggest surprise of all. It is bottomless and easily assessable right on top. It's seemingly bottomless, like some kind of magic trick! I can't understand how you did it really. And the fabric is chunky, but I really like it. It is extremely durable like steel plate but not as rigid as it looks, it is much more pliable and easy to scrunch into small places than it looks. The only problem I guess is for Patagonia. it's most likely the last daypack I'll ever need.

As a smaller person, I like that it’s relatively narrow and rectangular, keeping the weight compact for an easier carry. Wish there were load lifters (always). It does fit loads of stuff, and zippers move smoothly.Few things to improve: first, the material feels flimsy and I doubt it will hold up as long as comparable bags’ would (I reviewed this side by side with a FjƤllrƤven Ulvƶ 30 and a Thule Subterra 34, both had *way* more impressive, and actually waterproof, fabric). So I know this won’t hold up at all, and I’m surprised it showed up like this.Third, the organizer pockets need smaller stash pockets. The top pocket is huge; needs a smaller stash for little things (my airpods and other small floating items have fallen out of the sides while opening). The inside pocket sits too low down, requiring a big unzip and rummaging beneath items to get whatever you put there. Not practical. Not sure if I’ll keep it especially because of the damaged decal. The black looks really sharp though, and it does its job well, for now.

Fantastic Travel Pack But Could Be Perfect
20 July 2023

This is one of many Black Hole bags I own and use on a regular basis. This pack is one of my favorites for international travel when used with my 70L rolling Black Hole duffel bag. Plenty of space and incredibly versatile, but there is a simple addition that could be made to make this bag absolutely perfect for this pairing, the addition of a trolley sleeve. The backpack already has two different materials on the pack panel, one is a padded mesh to aid in breathability when worn, and the other is a rip stop fabric meant to help the back panel hold its shape and not deform under load. The rip stop is sewn on all four side, however Patagonia could leave a portion of the top and bottom open to create a trolley sleeve. Good upgrade from Black Hole Predecessor
27 April 2024

I've had a black hole backpack for about 15 years (which I still use for travel) but wanted a newer daily backpack for walking commutes to work.Overall, this newer pack is more refined that the older one. Curve of the pack, padding, and straps are more comfortable. The material is a bit thinner and lighter than its predecessor, which could impact its long term durability? Love the padded laptop pocket. Main compartment is roomy. Zippers are smooth, high quality. Good elastic on the side water bottle pockets, holds bottles well without slipping out.Typical Patagonia product, will probably last forever.

However, we have one of the larger Patagonia stores here in downtown Honolulu, so my wife and I hopped in the car and set out to go shopping. I also brought along a full compliment of Yeti Yonder water bottles, full lunch bag, books, notebooks, laptop, tablet, and other items, to load the bag up as much as possible, and see how it feels. After arriving and transferring all of my belongings into the Black Hole 32L Pack, I was very satisfied with the roominess, the extra pockets, and the look of the grey bag. Additionally, the full water bottles, were easy to carry and I did not feel as if they would fall out.I saw YouTube videos online, complaining about the lack of internal storage. However, one of my complaints of my Mystery Ranch bags, was that internal storage would catch on items as I am trying to stuff them into the bag. The Black Hole had no problems sliding items in, or opening big enough to get them out. Additionally, it seems that the bag is more water resistant than similarly sized Mystery Ranch and Osprey bags. They only (Small complaint is similar to that of other reviewer; that there is no protective laptop sleeve. The laptop compartment is quite wide and long so no worries about it accommodating a 17" laptop. However, I would be worried to carry a laptop without a protective case if I were traveling, as I feel that the two corners of the computer closest to the bottom of the bag would not have ample protection, and may end up taking some harder bumps if the bag was set down too hard. Other than that, I love this bag. The outside pocket is big enough for my 8 x 5 but thick Tul notebook / organizer that I use at meetings, the top pocket is large enough for medium books plus essentials like pencil cases, wallets, sunglass case, snacks, etc. Water bottle storage is FANTASTIC. The interior is exactly the roomy space that I need. Overall, I would recommend this bag.

Maybe I’m just not doing it right. But still mildly inconvenient when I’m trying to get something out in a hurry.Nonetheless, I highly recommend this product. It’s perfect for commuting either on the train or bike and it looks great!

I'm a big fan of this company and have bought many items over the years. They've been good to me and I really grappled with posting this review as it's not my way, but I'm confused by this bag on all fronts. It feels iterative for iterations sake: the computer pocket is large, fine, but the zipper jams all the time on the excess material that is occupying the corner creases; the top pocket frequently dumps my items out on the floor when I open the main compartment and though it's big enough for a book, which I like, it operates in a liminal space that lacks specificity; the main compartment is big enough to hold big items, if it's not packed to its limit, the whole thing folds down on itself and loses any sense of itself. The addition of the handles on the front was ...Ā MoreI'm a big fan of this company and have bought many items over the years. As well, the addition of the baggage strap between the shoulder straps.I leave for Thailand tomorrow and I'm gutted that I'm digging through other bags I've collected over the years, looking for an option that can help me out and not get in the way like I've found this one to...The first gen of these really rocked: I loved the fold down pouch; i used to not clip it and bike all of my groceries home with the added space. When it was falling apart after a solid decade of use, Patagonia replaced the base and some of the straps at no cost. That was some years ago.I just bought my daughter a little backpack and as stoked as I am for her to grow into it, I feel let down by this current product and wish I could go back in time and buy more of the original or just give this to someone who cares to navigate its idiosyncrasies. I really am not saying everything was better back when, I just wish this product was better. Like, be better!I choose climbing as a reco cause maybe if it was stuffed with ropes it would net out even, but the weight distribution is just wack.

Love it but….
19 August 2024

I bought this nearly a year ago for my train trip from Boston to Florida.Holds a ton , water proof and fair trade. All great stuff.Ok now for the not so great. All of the zippers stick and the water bottle pockets on the sides are really really wide and shallow. Ive already lost one bottle and cracked the top of another because it just doesnt hold the bottle . Especially if the bottle is empty . The weight distribution of the bag is weird so if you try to put the bag down it just tumbles forward , yes even if everything in the bag is centered at the bottom. Tbh the thing that bothers me the most is the fact that it has issues holding bottles , is there a fix for this at all?

the pack is decent but nothing innovative about the black hole series over the years. but if its not broke, dont fix it. but i miss the older black hole material. i really think you should redesign the back panel, it does not allow your back to breathe and it gets extremely sweaty in hot weather. i found that same problem with the Refugio also. i dont know, team up with osprey or something. make a roll top version, add daisy chains to the shoulder straps for gear accessories and attachments, and put a mesh stuff pocket on the front. and since i got your attention please make a black hole passport wallet.
