I swear I've never had a pack designed like this. Functional and extremely durable. Using it for business as well as pleasure, it needed to be very durable and have a lot of pockets. The durability is awesome, but I wasn't sure if the Blackhole Pack fabric was going to be too clunky and chunky, it absolutely is not. It didn't have a lot of pockets for stashing business essentials, so I was hesitant, but I have found that the top pocket has been the biggest surprise of all. It is bottomless and easily assessable right on top. It's seemingly bottomless, like some kind of magic trick! I can't understand how you did it really. It's an optical illusion of some kind! Everything goes in the top pocket and the pack remains sleek and compressible. If you own one, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about. And the fabric is chunky, but I really like it. It is extremely durable like steel plate but not as rigid as it looks, it is much more pliable and easy to scrunch into small places than it looks. The only problem I guess is for Patagonia. it's most likely the last daypack I'll ever need.

I was looking for a bucket-style backpack with a dedicated laptop sleeve for short business trips, and general airline travel. My specific requirements were strict, because when packed full, I wanted the largest bag possible that would qualify as a PERSONAL ITEM (not a carry on I want it to fit under the seat in front of me on a plane. Thank you budget airline baggage fees). I've now taken this backpack on multiple trips with Delta, United, Southwest, Spirit, and Frontier. It has happily fit under the seat in front of me in each of those scenarios, albeit with less footspace. The pockets, loops, and material are all perfect for airline travel, and I can easily fit everything I need inside. While the body of the pack is perfect (best I found to meet my needs after a ... MoreI was looking for a bucket-style backpack with a dedicated laptop sleeve for short business trips, and general airline travel. I think this is a massive oversight since this backpack is meant for a laptop, has pockets for water bottles, and can carry quite a bit of weight. From what I can tell, the shoulder straps were designed specifically (only) for larger men, they are extremely wide-set for a 5'4" female, and are quite uncomfortable. That would be easy to work with using the chest buckle, except the chest buckle is only adjustable to 3 different heights, and when the shoulder straps are shortened all the way, none of these chest strap positions sit above where a woman's boobs are, and it is wildly uncomfortable. Now that would also be somewhat acceptable, if there was a hip belt to help distribute the weight off of the shoulders with a hip belt. At a minimum, the pack should have a small, but sturdy loop of webbing to attach after-market hip belts too. Ideally, Patagonia would come up with a removable version of the Ascensionist's hipbelts (lightweight, but sturdy and able to distribute weight) to satisfy everyones needs, along with adding another adjustment level to the chest strap to allow it to be moved up even higher on the shoulder straps. I'll be keeping my pack and modifying it myself until those changes are made.

This backpack is exactly what I needed and wanted to use as my diaper bag. I have two kids (5 and 1), and it’s perfect to carry extra clothes for everyone, water bottles for everyone inside and out of the bag, and any other necessities for an outing or the airport. Several pouch options for stuffing things, including all the spare diapers and wipes I need while traveling. It’s a blackhole, so I know I can rely on its durability. It’s a backpack, so I will be able to use it beyond kids, though it will be for the kids I’m sure for a long time…

This is a cool-looking pack (maybe important?) with some nice zipper access for those who don’t like clamshells. As a smaller person, I like that it’s relatively narrow and rectangular, keeping the weight compact for an easier carry. Wish there were load lifters (always). It does fit loads of stuff, and zippers move smoothly.Few things to improve: first, the material feels flimsy and I doubt it will hold up as long as comparable bags’ would (I reviewed this side by side with a Fjällräven Ulvö 30 and a Thule Subterra 34, both had *way* more impressive, and actually waterproof, fabric). This zippers seem to be YKK, but unsure of what variety, and whether they will hold up. As others have noted, it’s silly to market this bag as water resistant with totally unprotected ... MoreThis is a cool-looking pack (maybe important?) with some nice zipper access for those who don’t like clamshells. This zippers seem to be YKK, but unsure of what variety, and whether they will hold up. As others have noted, it’s silly to market this bag as water resistant with totally unprotected zippers- I don’t even consider that resistant.Second, the “Patagonia” decal actually arrived damaged. So I know this won’t hold up at all, and I’m surprised it showed up like this.Third, the organizer pockets need smaller stash pockets. The top pocket is huge; needs a smaller stash for little things (my airpods and other small floating items have fallen out of the sides while opening). The inside pocket sits too low down, requiring a big unzip and rummaging beneath items to get whatever you put there. Not practical. Not sure if I’ll keep it especially because of the damaged decal. The black looks really sharp though, and it does its job well, for now.
I've had a black hole backpack for about 15 years (which I still use for travel) but wanted a newer daily backpack for walking commutes to work.Overall, this newer pack is more refined that the older one. Curve of the pack, padding, and straps are more comfortable. The material is a bit thinner and lighter than its predecessor, which could impact its long term durability? Love the padded laptop pocket. Main compartment is roomy. Zippers are smooth, high quality. Good elastic on the side water bottle pockets, holds bottles well without slipping out.Typical Patagonia product, will probably last forever.
I bough this backpack for school and as a hiking backpack. The quality is great. all of the zippers are nicely put together and the material of the entire backpack is of good quality. My issue is partly my fault and partly Patagonias. My fault in this that I thought that this backpack could fit a role as a school backpack when knowing it was not created with that intention. There are a total of 5 zippered compartments and only one of which offers SOME organization for small things. If you try hard you could make this into a school backpack but I have found that this is not within it's element. On Patagonia's fault, the laptop compartment zipper just seems poorly thought out. It is a little too hard to access since the shoulder straps are in the way. Some tweaking on Patagonia's behalf could result in a better engineered backpack layout.Overall the backpack is great but I feel like I had the wrong application in mind for this backpack. Patagonia could work on this backpack and truly perfect it.
The only redeeming quality of the bag is the black hole fabric. Besides this, the bag is awful. The pockets are poorly laid out. The few pockets that do exist are shallow and offer poor space. The main compartment offers no genuine organization. The main compartment is essentially a bucket in which to throw everything you need to bring. I can not see how this useful when hiking, going to work, or doing anything other than hauling a "bucket" load of gear from one place to another. Wish I could return and get a refund. Save your money by asking yourself this question: do you really need a bag this expensive that underperforms as much as it does?
I recently started law school and needed a new backpack since I am commuting every day. I am pretty petite so I was worried it would be too big for me to haul around/carry every day, but I actually really like the size of this backpack. It fits all the textbooks I need for the day, my lunch, notebooks, computer, iPad, and more without being overly enormous. It looks sleek and (somewhat) professional compared to backpacks from other brands/companies which I really like. I bought the slate blue color and it is almost closer to a bluish-dark grey, but it is still a really pretty color. The quality of the backpack feels great so far, I hope it holds up over time. My only complaint is that I do wish the straps were a little softer. This was NEARLY the pack that solved the quest for the functional, all-in-one backpack that checks every box.I LOVE the way the main compartment opens. Nice and wide with easy reach-in access and the right amount of space. 32L feels like the sweet spot for having enough capacity to use for multiple scenarios but not to capacious for things to get lost in the void. The front pocket is serviceable albeit tight but just right for its use. The top compartment is stable enough to throw some moderately weighty items in without it slouching, and the top strap on the front is bomber! I didn't realize how nice a strap like that is for handling the bag short distances. But ohhhh the laptop pouch. I didn't realize how nice a strap like that is for handling the bag short distances. But ohhhh the laptop pouch. The main thing I look for in a bag that will hold my computer is how fussy it is to access, and the computer pouch is farrrr too fussy.I understand the idea behind a lay-flat design. But my first issue has been with the airports I frequent still requiring me to remove the laptop and defeating it's inherent purpose. What it has done, however, is introduce a few daily frustrations removing and storing my laptop. Wedged underneath the straps, the pocket is a chore to access from the top due to the straps arching over the zipper. It's not wholly inconvenient, but for accessing the compartment in the day to day, I would rather not wrestle a zipper, strap, and buckle to start work.So I instead started loading my notebook from the side without using the inner sleeve to avoid dealing with the straps every day. Unfortunately, I quickly realized that this part of the pocket does not have a false bottom like the inner sleeve does to protect it from small drops. So after a small dent, I went back to fighting the intended top load design. I feel like the easy fix would be to add a false bottom to the lay-flat pocket as well, giving the user the option with which way to load the laptop and not have to worry about drops. However I am not a bag designer, so this could be a misguided sentiment.Furthermore, the plastic buckle inside the lay-flat sleeve can scratch up the surface of a laptop a bit. In my case it was nothing crazy, just some unsightly marks that only I will probably notice. I realize this buckle is there to use with a water reservoir if necessary which is a nice addition, however Velcro or another soft enclosure is probably not going to mark up any gadget.Everything else about the pack is great. The materials, the fit, and even the water bottle holders are excellent! Unfortunately for me, after a small dent and some smaller marks, the quest for that unicorn backpack will have to continue.
I've used this bag for day hikes, for car camping, and as my carryon bag for trips. The top pocket fits all my charging cables, glasses cases, wallet, phone, keys, etc, with room to spare. The interior pocket will fit a TON, but it's not easily accessed or sorted without packing cubes. With packing cubes though, I can slide things in and out easily, and I think that makes the bag more flexible and customizable based on the type of trip than if it had a ton of pockets. The handles are all in the right places, the water bottle sleeves are deep, and I can fit in my laptop, a book, and some magazines in the back panel and keep them from getting dirty with the stuff in the main compartment. The black version feels swank enough to take on work trips and it cleans up well - it still looks brand new after being dragged around muddy campgrounds.
