I swear I've never had a pack designed like this. Functional and extremely durable. Using it for business as well as pleasure, it needed to be very durable and have a lot of pockets. The durability is awesome, but I wasn't sure if the Blackhole Pack fabric was going to be too clunky and chunky, it absolutely is not. It didn't have a lot of pockets for stashing business essentials, so I was hesitant, but I have found that the top pocket has been the biggest surprise of all. It is bottomless and easily assessable right on top. It's seemingly bottomless, like some kind of magic trick! I can't understand how you did it really. It's an optical illusion of some kind! Everything goes in the top pocket and the pack remains sleek and compressible. If you own one, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about. And the fabric is chunky, but I really like it. It is extremely durable like steel plate but not as rigid as it looks, it is much more pliable and easy to scrunch into small places than it looks. The only problem I guess is for Patagonia. it's most likely the last daypack I'll ever need.

I was looking for a bucket-style backpack with a dedicated laptop sleeve for short business trips, and general airline travel. My specific requirements were strict, because when packed full, I wanted the largest bag possible that would qualify as a PERSONAL ITEM (not a carry on I want it to fit under the seat in front of me on a plane. Thank you budget airline baggage fees). I've now taken this backpack on multiple trips with Delta, United, Southwest, Spirit, and Frontier. It has happily fit under the seat in front of me in each of those scenarios, albeit with less footspace. The pockets, loops, and material are all perfect for airline travel, and I can easily fit everything I need inside. While the body of the pack is perfect (best I found to meet my needs after a ... I think this is a massive oversight since this backpack is meant for a laptop, has pockets for water bottles, and can carry quite a bit of weight. From what I can tell, the shoulder straps were designed specifically (only) for larger men, they are extremely wide-set for a 5'4" female, and are quite uncomfortable. That would be easy to work with using the chest buckle, except the chest buckle is only adjustable to 3 different heights, and when the shoulder straps are shortened all the way, none of these chest strap positions sit above where a woman's boobs are, and it is wildly uncomfortable. Now that would also be somewhat acceptable, if there was a hip belt to help distribute the weight off of the shoulders with a hip belt. At a minimum, the pack should have a small, but sturdy loop of webbing to attach after-market hip belts too. Ideally, Patagonia would come up with a removable version of the Ascensionist's hipbelts (lightweight, but sturdy and able to distribute weight) to satisfy everyones needs, along with adding another adjustment level to the chest strap to allow it to be moved up even higher on the shoulder straps. I'll be keeping my pack and modifying it myself until those changes are made.

I needed to replace my last BH Backpack because I couldn't find it and I had a fairly extensive trip coming up. So far I've done London, Paris, Rome, NYC, Puerto Rico, the ABC's and now Belize... this bag has been exceptional. Its versatile, light but still built up enough to give you the support you want. The pocket placement and functionality is next level. I was happy with the last rendition of this backpack but this one is way more streamlined. I've had it rain/sprinkle and while I definitely use an array of packing cubes nothing on the inside of the bag has been wet/damp. Also the exterior face being carabiner friendly is super useful, I have been hanging my neck pillow and Keens from them consistently for ease of packing.10 out of 10 would recommend. I just ... I might have to gift this one away to validate buying the Sage or Hammond's color wave....

I've had a black hole backpack for about 15 years (which I still use for travel) but wanted a newer daily backpack for walking commutes to work.Overall, this newer pack is more refined that the older one. Curve of the pack, padding, and straps are more comfortable. The material is a bit thinner and lighter than its predecessor, which could impact its long term durability? Love the padded laptop pocket. Main compartment is roomy. Zippers are smooth, high quality. Good elastic on the side water bottle pockets, holds bottles well without slipping out.Typical Patagonia product, will probably last forever.
I was somewhat disappointed when the new backpack arrived without the iconic shine and the fantastic rear laptop zipper with a sturdy pocket. However, its the iconic shine that truly draws me to Patagonia bags compared to others. While the new backpack does include a laptop zipper, I find the design and lack of shine make it an inferior product compared to the older design. Incorporating some new colors and making slight improvements would have greatly enhanced the overall product.
I bough this backpack for school and as a hiking backpack. The quality is great. all of the zippers are nicely put together and the material of the entire backpack is of good quality. My issue is partly my fault and partly Patagonias. My fault in this that I thought that this backpack could fit a role as a school backpack when knowing it was not created with that intention. There are a total of 5 zippered compartments and only one of which offers SOME organization for small things. If you try hard you could make this into a school backpack but I have found that this is not within it's element. On Patagonia's fault, the laptop compartment zipper just seems poorly thought out. It is a little too hard to access since the shoulder straps are in the way. Some tweaking on ... Patagonia could work on this backpack and truly perfect it.
I own the fold top black hole backpack from a few years ago. It was my standard bike commute bag. It was great at keeping things dry. This new design is great, with regards to packing and accessibility. It is also comfortable to wear. The waist strap has been removed, which is good because I never used it on the previous version. Missing though are two little elastic bands on the ends of the shoulder straps to keep the excess from flailing around. There is a band on the chest strap. My biggest problem is the horizontal zippers on top. They are not at all water tight. After a 10 minute bike ride in moderate rain, my items in the small top pouch were soaked. If you have the main compartment full, items near the top will also get wet. Why make the entire bag out of a great water resistant material and then use leaky zippers?
The only redeeming quality of the bag is the black hole fabric. Besides this, the bag is awful. The pockets are poorly laid out. The few pockets that do exist are shallow and offer poor space. The main compartment offers no genuine organization. The main compartment is essentially a bucket in which to throw everything you need to bring. I can not see how this useful when hiking, going to work, or doing anything other than hauling a "bucket" load of gear from one place to another. Wish I could return and get a refund. Save your money by asking yourself this question: do you really need a bag this expensive that underperforms as much as it does?
I recently started law school and needed a new backpack since I am commuting every day. I am pretty petite so I was worried it would be too big for me to haul around/carry every day, but I actually really like the size of this backpack. It fits all the textbooks I need for the day, my lunch, notebooks, computer, iPad, and more without being overly enormous. It looks sleek and (somewhat) professional compared to backpacks from other brands/companies which I really like. I bought the slate blue color and it is almost closer to a bluish-dark grey, but it is still a really pretty color. The quality of the backpack feels great so far, I hope it holds up over time. My only complaint is that I do wish the straps were a little softer. They are kind of rough/scratchy which ... Otherwise, I would totally recommend this bag to students!!
Nice solid backpack. I like that the new material has a more matte look versus the shinny appearance in the older versions of the bag. Nice volume and does not look or feel too bulky when empty. Just a few subcompartments inside (2 quick access and 1 internal pockets) so not ideal if one needs a lot of organization. Wish it has a waist strap for heavier loads.
