Why did I replace a perfectly good hanging rack with the DoubleTrack Pro 2? Two reasons: one, I was tired of trying to work around top tube adapters with the oddly-shaped frames our bikes have; and two, one of our bikes has fenders, making any of the wheel-clamp platforms non-compatible. I also like how this rack can accommodate a wide array of wheel types -- road, hybrid, MTB, fat tire, etc.I like how simple it is to get a bike secured in the DTP2, and I also liked how easy it was to assemble overall - I don't think it took me more than a half-hour to put everything together once we got it home.My only complaints: I would maybe like it if the rack did fold down while bikes were mounted (I can still get in my pickup box, but this may be an issue for those with ... MoreWhy did I replace a perfectly good hanging rack with the DoubleTrack Pro 2? Thule has never let me down and still holds the standard. This rack is solid, stable, and secure. Easy to assemble. Love the locks on the clamps - i don't see how a thief could get my bikes or the whole rack. So much easier loading and securing especially after a long ride when I am already tired. A short lift and clamp it down with no worries about my partner's bike scratching up mine. Since some of my bikes have fenders, I chose the rack that clamps onto the top tube - and these clamps even adjust to slants. Two heavier trail bikes even traveled safely - no wheels spinning in the air or rack bobbing up and down. There is some side to side bobble on rougher roads and I wish Thule would design a support washer/nut for the other side of the hitch bolt. I purchased this from Eriks because it was on sale and because the bike rack was sold out in my area.I received what appeared to be a used and defective product. There were obvious scuff marks on the bike rack and the stinger portion was defective in that it was not threaded and therefore would not accept the large bolt that secures the bike rack to the hitch. The bags holding the screws, nuts, washers, wrench was not a factory sealed bag but a store zip lock.Because of the weight of the product and the cost of shippingit back and because I was so anxious to make this work I didn't send the product back. I called Thule for assistance - replacement parts; which are on back order.

This rack is awesome! I have a 2 inch receiver and the adapter works great, especially once you tighten down the lock bolt. It barely wobbles at all, even with two big downhill mountain bikes on it. I really like that it came with locks and that the frame attachment clamps move up and down. I also have a BMX bike that I transport on it and the wheel tracks are very easy to adjust whenever I need. I keep this rack on my car pretty much all year round and have had it for over a year with no issues at all.I have had it fully loaded with two big bikes and been on very rough roads and it has held up great. The one downfall is that you can't move it out of the way to open your trunk when there are bikes on it but that was never a big concern for me.I was also worried ... MoreThis rack is awesome! I would definitely buy this rack again.
I've driven around with this for about 1000 miles so far, through mountains, cities, and potholes. My review thus far...I bought this because I wanted a platform-type hitch-mounted rack that lockable and was sufficiently lightweight that one person could mount/dismount it easily. It certainly meets those requirements and some. I only mount my cyclocross and my wife's road bikes on this, so it's hardly taxed in terms of tire size and bike weight but it looks like it could handle a fat tire bike pretty easily.Security: I like that the bike frame locks to the rack and the rack locks to the hitch via a threaded pin (see the user manual). I wouldn't leave the bike locked overnight, but probably OK for a quick restaurant stop, and I was able to U-lock both wheels to ... MoreI've driven around with this for about 1000 miles so far, through mountains, cities, and potholes. I wouldn't leave the bike locked overnight, but probably OK for a quick restaurant stop, and I was able to U-lock both wheels to the transverse beam on the rack with no problem. Someone could cut through the rack and frame if they were really committed to theft.Convenience: It folds flat and then rocks up to the car to save space and travel without a bike on it. Thanks to my hitch location, mine just clears the trunk of my car (not an SUV) so I don't have to lower the rack to open the trunk. I had no problem positioning 2 cx/road bikes on these facing opposite directions.Weight: Very manageable by one person. Only takes the one tool that Thule provides (just a hex wrench--see the user manual) to remove the unlocked hitch mount.Tires: There are grooves for skinny tires in the tire trays. The trays can be positioned anywhere along the beam to match each bike's layout.
I picked this rack because it had trays and easily accommodated bikes with fenders. Overall, it works well. It's easy to mount to the hitch. It's easy to load and secure the bikes. The rack includes locks for the hitch and the clamps. While I wouldn't leave bikes unattended for a long period of time, the locks provide some comfort during short rest stops. The clamps will rub away decals over long drives. So, I recommend using pipe insulation or something else to cushion between the clamp and your bike frame. If possible, I recommend positioning the bikes to avoid one bike's seat rubbing against the bar tape of the other. My brother has a previous model, the Thule Doubletrack Platform-Style 2 Bike Rack. Sturdy bike rack! Test drove and bikes stayed on very secure. Not very complicated to install but the directions were poor. Takes a few adjustments to get the bikes positioned correctly before locking in all the settings. Once it was set up though, I could have the bikes on/off in a matter of seconds. Does have a locking feature for the hitch and each bike. Folds down to allow tail lift to open when bikes are off. Also, there is enough room to stand between the vehicle and bike to make unloading easier or getting stuff out to the tail lift window on our vehicle.
We have an Electra Cruiser and a Townie Path, both with fenders. They are lightweight enough to work within the limits on this rack and are easily mounted and it's very secure. There's a bit of bouncing around; I have this in a 2" pickup truck receiver and mine is a bit of a "loose" fit in general, even with my regular hitches. I ran a couple of straps off the top of the tailgate to the outside of the bottom bars to give it a bit of help for the road bounces, just in case. I only wish that the spacer that adapts the 1-1/4" to 2" receiver was metal instead of plastic, we'll just see how it works out. But all in all, I'm very pleased how this works - there are fewer options for bikes with fenders than without.Assembly was pretty straightforward - though I am not a fan of picto-gram only instructions, they worked well enough but could be a bit more detailed and explanatory. Where to place the straps for the wheels baffled me for a bit, it's not clear in the picture where the bands should go for smaller tires. It took a few minutes to figure out. That's was the only sticking point, the rest was pretty easy to follow. The parts seem robust enough for their function. There's a lot of plastic, but it's thick enough and once together all seems fine. The bikes are solid in position and the center frame clamping system worked great for the drop frame of the cruiser and also the Townie, which has a lower top tube than normal. The clamps easily adjusted to perfect positions for both bikes - they are perfectly upright with no interference problems. The thing folds up compactly. The locking devices work great, the clamp locks are very clever. This my first Thule product and I am very impressed.
After looking all over for a trusted retailer who offered this rack, I pulled the trigger on this with my first order with Moosejaw. And, boy, I'm glad I did. First, the rack is tremendous -- everything is quality on it. Assembled in less than 30 mins., and the thing is rock solid. I took it for a test ride without a bike, and then one with a cheapo from the back of the garage. No sway, no problems. Now, it's transported my bike all over the Southwest. It is well worth the money, and I would advise Moosejaw to restock it. Second, the service from Moosejaw was fantastic. I called them for more info about the company, the product, and their rewards program and was sold by their commitment to getting everything just right. Quality build, no rattling or excessive wobbles. Good features, well thought out. Can drop my tailgate (F-150) without interference. Like the integrated locks on both hitch & mast clamps. Instructions really suck, but if you know which end of a hammer is the handle then you should be able to figure it out without too much cussin’. 4 out of 5 due to short term of actual use.
