Another high-quality product from Sennheiser. I use the e906 for recording guitar in conjunction with a Shure SM57 in an isolation cabinet. I like the "presence boost" switch engaged. I found that I liked that sound better than the "flat" position of the e906 or what I hear with the Sennheiser e609 version. I also record guitar speaker cabinets using the e906 on one speaker and an e609 one the other speaker. Quality sound from a quality company.

Let's talk sound first. Sounds similar to a Shure 57. A little brighter and more attack. It has a presents switch to modify the output curve with either more top end or to a smoother sound. Overall the sound quality is great with very little coloration added. The mic only weights a few ounces so supporting it is not a problem. It can be supported by its cable and hang down in front of the cabinet saving the cost of a stand. Not to professional but effective. I don't know how well it would handle getting dropped or other misuse. I don't want to try. It seems to be a good quality product. It is a dynamic mic so no phantom power is required. A little pricey. Has a good output and good off axis rejection. Overall it is a keeper.

These mics came highly recommended by another sound engineer I know and, having owned the lesser e609 mics, I decided to take the plunge when I found these at a fantastic price. Pros: Excellent sound quality. Have used it in front of a few different types of bands guitar amps and found it did a fine job whether they played the blues or rock. The filter suggestions in the manual worked and I look forward to trying it with a heavier band to see how it does. Cons: None so far, but if the quality of the 609's that I own, one for over 20 years, is any indication, then this mic will provide years of quality sound reproduction. Brand new, these come with a soft cloth mic bag, mic clip, mic stand euro-adapter and manual.
Overall:For an extra $10 you also get a cable and boom stand?!? It would be foolish to pass on this mic if you are currently in the market for one!! I didn't purchase mine through zZounds, so I did not get the extras, which is a Great offer!! But I decided to try it on some of the acoustic instruments in this situation. Among other mics used, I recorded some Banjo, Acoustic Guitar, and Mandolin using the e906. And......WOW did these instruments come out sounding nothing less than Spectacular!!!I did not try it on Bass or Vocals so I cannot comment on the e906's performance with them. But I have NEVER been disappointed with this mic on Anything...EVER!!If you are thinking of getting an e609 (a Great mic) and have the extra money....upgrade and get THIS MIC!!! I have a Hammond Xk5 with lower manual. I drug around a Hammond A-102 on the road for a long time. With it, I also had my Leslie 122 (same one as now). After trying several microphones, on the Leslie, I decided to use the e906 on the horn and a Shure SM57 on the bottom rotor. Great combination.
Sound:It sounds great without being picky about placement. Plenty hot enough for being on or near the edge for darker tones. It's a hot signal and a little brighter at all settings by nature, or better yet, loud and clear no matter what assuming you didn't completely miss the cone opening!Features:Smaller than it looks, lightweight, comes with clip and carry bag. There's a noticable difference in the tone/voice selections but not so much I would really notice in a live setting nor would it matter because it would sound awesome still.Ease of Use:Plug it in, select a tone. Flexibility and efficiency if you set up and tear down regualarly. Saves space on stage and keeps me off stage fixing stands that have been kicked. It feels solid for something so light, really light compared to a 57. My uses have been exclusively OD/HighGain rock so I can't speak on it's versaitily for genres but for a general purpose something different than "it just works", it's the way to go!Manufacturer Support:Probably won't ever need it but Sennheiser has a great reputation so no fear.The Wow Factor:Couldn't be happier with the clarity I'm getting, letting the guitars cut through that much more. Side address, 3 different voicings (dark, neutral, bright), throw it over the cab so it hangs in front of the speaker center-ish and good to go. Used it for a couple shows and it outshines the 57 for my purposes by far.
So I got two of these mics, not for guitar but for Latin percussion. I've used them live and to record bongos and tumbadoras (congas). Of course they work great on guitar cabs/combo amps but they do way more than that! I've also been messing around with them as close mics on upright piano and vibraphone. On bass I've tried them on a PJB 4x5 and they did the job. I think this mic would probably be fine on a 1x10 or 2x10 if paired with an additional condenser for more focused low-end.

I have a Demeter Silent Speaker Iso Box that I have been using a 57 and a 58 in with semi-satisfying results. I built a second box to put the Demeter in to even further cut down on the sound levels in my studio. I have taken the door off of the Demeter to let it breath and it takes away all the boxiness of the sound. The only thing missing was this mic! It sounds so much better I can't even believe it! It's so much more balanced and it has smoothed out the mids that have a tendency to build up in a small space like this. Blending the 58 in brings back a little of the "mid scoop" present in the 906. The super cardioid polar pattern of this mic is perfect for this application. From clean to crunch to distortion, my iso rig now sounds like a mic'd up cab in a dead ...
