Absolutely amazing lens when it comes to sharpness, color fidelity, contrast, falloff, low light performance and of course bokeh. I purchased it to complement my APO Summicron SL 50mm. The summilux is so good that the APO Summicron hasn't been used once since I got this lens. Autofocus is about 20% slower than the APO Summicron SL lenses but when you nail focus on that perfect shot this lens creates magic and reminds you why you spent $6595.00. Its also built like a tank so durability is unrivaled.

I purchased the Black-Chrome edition of the Summilux 50mm with the matte black finish. It's nicely weighted/well balanced on my M10r. It's a beautiful lens.According to the literature, this is a limited 500 piece run. Although a hefty price for a lens, I'm sure it will appreciate in value over the years and after several photoshoots, I found it one of the best Leica M lenses I have ever used.The resulting pics look great. I see no chromatic aberrations or distortions. I've used it for portraits and the images are sharp with that distinct 'Leica look'.The lens comes with a matching metal lens hood that complements the black matte finish and classic look of the lens. Thanks to the selection at Lensrentals, I’ve been able to try some cool lenses, and this Leica reins about them all. I’ve used both the f/1.2 and f/0.95 Noctilux (thanks to Lensrentals) and even those don’t give the awesome results that I constantly get from this lens. Sad news for Lensrentals is that renting this eventually made me want one bad enough that I bought one for myself. So now I’ll be renting other Leica M lenses. Haha. I use this for photography, but also for a lot of videography on a LUMIX S1H using an M to L adapter. Photo of this Lensrentals lens, taken with my new Leica 50mm Summilux-M ASPH on an S1H.

This is a beautifully made lens - in fact, a piece of mechanical jewellery. From the silky-smooth focussing ring to the precise and smooth aperture stops, this lens is an absolute masterpiece from Leica. I have this lens permanently attached to my M246 Monochrom - a perfect match for aesthetics and for practicality. On the subject of practicality, Leica have, unfortunately - and characteristically - neglected to give proper consideration to those of us who wish to use this lens with a filter AND the beautiful, black chrome brass, lens hood at the same time! Unusually, for the modern Leica m lenses, which tend to take either a 39mm filter or a 46mm filter, this lens takes a 43 mm filter, but not really a problem in itself. However and by much brain-wracking I have come up with something of a Heath-Robinson solution of my own, the aim being to protect, at all times, the front lens element from dust/moisture and accidental scratches etc while using the lens hood AND a filter at the same time. I have pushed in through the FRONT of the lens hood a 43 mm filter (in this case a B+W yellow filter) while at the same time pinching in the two silver pinch lugs at either side of the rear of the lens hood barrel - it is most important that the filter should be pushed in uniformly to rest between the outer and outer clip springs and that it should not be allowed to sit in the barrel at a slant. The next step is to screw the lens hood and filter combination into the actual lens - do this by gently holding the filter glass or rim in order to ensure that it rotates with the rotation of the lens hood - by so doing, you will find that, eventually, the filter/lens hood combination becomes very (and I mean VERY) firmly attached to the lens - you have trapped the lens hood onto the lens by securing it to the filter and by screwing the filter into the lens itself! You will then need a lens cap - well, here is the magic! For the wider, outer, aperture of the lens hood, a spring-clip 62 mm lens cap fits exactly - for added measure, I have also fitted a 49mm spring clip lens cap to cover the inner aperture inside the barrel of the lens hood, thus providing immediate protection of the filter itself. It is because of the idiotic design of the dedicated lens hood and the lack of any sensible thought given to the use of filters while attaching the hood, that I have, reluctantly, awarded this lens four stars instead of five.
I just got the Summilux 50 1.4 ASPH FLE used from B&H. I'm not sure if my Summilux has a lot of character though. It doesn't produce much glow wide open, and I didn't see any other vintage style imperfections that people love. What I have noticed is that the lens is sharp with good contrast at f/1.4, which is a rare and valuable trait for a compact fast 50. Bokeh is the other stand-out feature of the Summilux. The lens has a unique bokeh rendering that just looks amazing. I saw obvious color fringing on some out-of-focus highlights at f/1.4, so the lens isn't perfect. The only other lens I own that's on the same level with the Summilux is the Sony 50 1.2 GM. The Summilux is the best lens I ever put on my M10. It's a brilliant design.

The smoothness of the out of focus areas is remarkable, bokeh is really unique and makes this lens part of best practices for any portrait photography. AF could be faster, but at this point, I am glad that it is precise enough to get the image perfectly sharp where I want, mostly when I want it. Truly a master piece, this lens should be on your to-shoot-with list. Saved for a very long time to purchase this lens for film photography on my M6.When I received the lens it got stiff as I turned the focus ring towards the 0.7 mark.I was disappointed and returned it. I purchased a brand new replacement and to my dismay it too gets stiff when the focus ring is turned to the 0.7 mark. It’s not as smooth as my other Leica lenses throughout the focus range.Not sure if the stiffness at 0.7 will go way with consistent use.Bummer on such an expensive lens. I don’t want to buy a third one only to discover it has the same stiff focus ring issue.
This is the ultimate 50mm 1.4. The earlier version was great, but the newer version is even better. The lens is really sharp across the frame now (the earlier version was a bit soft toward the corner). Excellent bokeh that separates the subject from the background. High-fidelity colors and contrast pop in your photos. The combination of the Leica M11P and this lens makes a perfect marriage, and the quality of the photo is unbeatable. Yes, it is not cheap, but the Leica holds its value well, and you can have your own gallery of specular pictures with the combination!

But when I tried it, I realized that it was very awkward to focus. The tab caused me to overshoot constantly, and so much of the lens extends during focusing that I found I was often accidentally applying a bending pressure to the lens, preventing it from focusing smoothly. So I returned the lens and was frustrated that I was still looking for my new 50, Then I saw the Black Chrome version, and I was so excited to see that not only was it a beautiful lens from the outside, but it got rid of the focusing tab, added a beefy hood, and less of the lens itself extends during focusing! It's been a month or two now, and 4-5 weddings and a handful of engagement shoots later, it is everything I was looking for. It's a perfect mate to my A7s and A7II using a Voigtlander VM-E adapter. It's beautifully sharp, with great contrast, and outstanding character. The lens feels wonderfully well built and is perfectly damped (though the aperture ring could be a littttle more tight for my taste). But really, it's everything you want a 50mm 1.4 to be, and everything you want a Leica to be. Optically, there's little left to be desired, aside from a minor amount of CA at 1.4 on backlit subjects (obviously). The only quibble I have is that the hood (which I actually really like) is a bit awkward. Where the hood on the standard version pops out of the lens, allowing easy application and removal of the cap, this lens requires that you pinch the hood on either side, remove it, slip it around, place it on in reverse, then place the slide on cap over all of that. It's elegant, aesthetically, but clunkly in practice, and I find that I only put the cap back on at the end of the day. Minor, but worth noting if that matters to you. Overall, I can't praise it enough, and I encourage anyone thinking of getting a 50 summilux to consider going the black chrome direction. :-)
This Lux is the 2023 with the closer focusing distance. It seems novel, but it makes a huge difference in its use cases, particularly those where subject separation is the goal. The image quality is exceptional. The bokeh is unlike any other brand's lenses. Color and light reproduction are spectacular. It's an all around beast that I'd choose time and time again if given the option. For the reasonable rates that lens rentals has this one available for I would absolutely rent this lens again.
