This was my first gear-rental experience, and I will definitely be returning! My lens arrived early, and VERY well packaged in a plastic flight case. The 12mm Leica looked to be in absolutely mint condition, and the protector filter was a nice touch. Everything worked just as expected, had me eyeballing the cost to just keep it! The return instructions and label were clearly outlined, even came with a piece of tape lol… the whole experience was totally hassle free, and made my shoot for the weekend possible. I got this lens and literally used it for 1 hour and returned it. The optics are fantastic, sharp all through the aperture ranges. Corners are excellent even wide open. The build quality is awesome, very high quality lens for still photography. However,....the aperture ring clicks in partial stop increments. The ring cannot be de-clicked. This is fine unless you want to run it with an auto IRIS setting. Selecting auto aperture mode for video does NOT allow for a smooth ramping aperture! Your videos will click open and closed all through the aperture range. This is terrible for run and gun or gimbal use! This lens is too expensive to have a harsh, visual clicking aperture and brightens changes landing on every 1/3 stop as it opens or closes. If you are not shooting ... This is one of Panasonic's top of the range Leica branded lenses. For a micro four thirds lens it is big and quite heavy but that's because of the excellent glass that's inside, and of course the fact that it is f1.4, ie a 'fast' lens. But this is not a cheap lens and unless you really need the f1.4 it might be better to look at Panasonic's (also Leica branded) 15mm lens which whilst it is a bit less wide, and a bit 'slower' a f1.7, is considerably cheaper, smaller and lighter, but still very good quality.

Moved on from a Rokinon 12mm F2 MF to this lens. Had business trip to Tokyo and picked this up locally.Pros: F1.4, super sharp in the center, absolutely great color rendition, nice bokeh (IMHO), silent and rapid AF, solid construction. Works well on Oly bodies.Cons: The price, of course, but you decide if it is worth it. As a hiker and an avid wide angle fan, this is my goto lens BUT the weight is HUGE compared with other MFT primes. I did not subtract any stars because it is lots of glass (low F) and metal construction. Just be aware that as you get older you WILL think about how much you want to lug that extra weight if you are doing mileage.
I bought this one elsewhere, because of a promotion (sorry, B&H), and I could not be happier with it. Edge to edge sharpness is near perfect. It's a very substantial piece of kit, as well. The amount of light it lets in seems impossible. It's also the fastest focusing lens I've encountered. It's a perfect fit for aerial video (my main purpose), but will fit into other niches well, IMO. Yes, it's expensive. It costs more than the body I'm using it with. But if you're going to do 4K video, you need something with this amount of sharpness, if you want to impress yourself, and others. If you can afford it, but it.
I love this lens. I used it on a Panasonic GX9. I. Or ally run the Panasonic Leica 15mm F1.7. Small lens, perfect for this camera, and almost perfect walk around lens. With the crop it’s a 30mm equivalent, and I prefer 24mm. The Panasonic Leica 12mm is perfect, it’s just a little bit large for this camera. I could get used to that though.It’s a great lens, very sharp, and relatively fast. What shocked me though was its close focusing ability. It’s not a macro but it can focus remarkably close. Your shipping boxes are bulletproof. No problem there. The inner padding was superb, and condition of the retail box was perfect. But when I pulled out the lens there was no front cap. Odd. This is at least my third lens from you, and that's atypical. Then I noticed the light colored crescent of wear on the front element. OK, something isn't right. Whew. A lens cloth cleaned it off. The lens had been bouncing around violently enough inside the retail box to dislodge the cap [which I found], and then the lens sat askew atop the cap for the duration of the voyage, with an internal edge wearing, and depositing a fine smear of plastic, on the front element. The stills were as sharp as I have seen with my GH4, even out to the edges while shooting wide open, and the video was clean as could be (it cleaned up the VFR 96fps a lot). The aperture could be change manually or with the camera dials by simply changing the iris ring to the "A" setting or by rotating the ring to the desired aperture. As mentioned before, if you adjust the aperture ring manually you will hear an audible click so keep that in mind for video use but in my case I typically would have the iris set for a particular shot and being that most of what I used the lens for was slo motion and b-roll I didn't have to worry about the audio too much. I would prefer to have seen a focus ring with stops (minimum distance to infinity). This lens takes right at a full turn to rack focus from the minimum distance to infinity. Great macro capabilities though (about 2.5 inches minimum focus distance). Where I think this lens shines is at night while capturing night time lapses (see pic). With this lens the M4/3 sensor can now compete a little with the bigger brother sensors. Although I do like a little wider lens than a 24mm equivalent it still performed very well. All in all this is a great lens just wish it was priced like the 25mm f1.4. That is the only reason for the 4 STAR rating.
If you need an MFT 12mm for low light or if you need a 12mm prime to complete your lineup of MFT primes, this is the lens for you. Excellent construction. Beautiful images. I use it on my Olympus E-M1 ii and Olympus PEN-F cameras. The aperture ring on the lens doesn't work on Olympus cameras, but they have built-in image stabilization (not really needed on a prime that wide). You can get as close as 8" away from a subject and achieve some beautiful bokeh.
