Happy Holidays everyone! I'm a long time Columbia fan. I have hiking shorts, convertible pants, and shirts just to name a few. Columbia products fit perfect and their sizes are true to fit. I wear them for most occasions, hiking, daytime, and night and weekend gatherings with friends, dinners etc. I even wore them with a sport coat at a nice dinner when I forgot to pack my dress slacks. Equally if not better, Columbia's Customer Care Team are outstanding. They are knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly. The Convertible pants and shorts are perfect. Thank you Columbia!

I bought these pants a few weeks ago in preparation for my vacation to Zion National Park with my brother and my cousin. My parents and older brother and his girlfriend all came for a basketball game at our school (my brother that I’m on vacation with goes to the same school as me). With not doing any hiking in the park prior to attempting the most challenging hike, we did not really know what clothing to wear, as it was an abnormally cold week for Utah. My brother opted for jeans and my cousin opted for sweat pants, but I was glad to have the security of knowing I had the option of both pants and shorts. As we walked up the trail, it became apparent that I would indeed need to take advantage of the shorts feature. Just before Walter’s Wiggles (the part of the trail with steep switchbacks), I decided to make the change. This brings up my only complaint about these pants- switching between modes. I sat down on the trail expecting to easily slip the bottoms over my shoes, but that was not possible. I sat there for a couple minutes with many people watching (many were complimenting my wise decision and were probably quite jealous), with one person even calling me “very European.” After a few minutes of struggle removing the calf covers, I finally got to shorts mode, which I must say is much more stylish than the pants mode. Walter’s Wiggles were a breeze in shorts mode and we finally reached the chained portion of the hike. There came a point where I did not wish to continue as I had just slipped on the ice. While the rest of my group continued to the top, I sat and waited in what proved to be a popular stopping point for people in the same situation as me. I discussed future plans with a fellow college student and even learned quite a bit of family medical history from another man who had recently recovered from a heart attack. During that time I also ate a string cheese, which I later found out my brother had specifically packed for himself. The rest of the hike included a re-zip and another un-zip of the calf covers, but I learned my lesson and took my shoes all the way off this time, making it much more efficient. It also included a surprising amount of snow and a painful descent down Walter’s Wiggles. Overall, it was a great day and these pants were crucial to my comfort throughout the hike. I can’t wait to wear them for my next hike!

I would like to give these pants a better rating but there are a couple issues that need to be resolved. First off I have 5 pair of these and really like the pants for travel, hiking and biking. I travel a lot and these pants can do it all eliminating the need for several different types of pants. However the stitching on one pair did unravel on the back pocket. If you want two of the same color buy them at the same time otherwise the color may be a slight but visible mismatch. Found this out when I put the wrong bottoms on the wrong shorts.

Traveled internationally with these pants for a year. They got worn daily for about half the month. Love the versatility of having cargo pants and shorts in one. Packs up small, washes and dries quickly, lightweight for hot, humid Asian days, and loose enough to fit a pair of thermals under. Drawbacks were the hip pockets are really small and at a weird angle. Objects kept sliding out while sitting and sometimes walking. The cargo pockets on the side are extremely small. We always wash these on delicate or hand wash them and let them air dry. Despite our best effort, less than a time for the three pair we rotated through the stitching, began to come out and multiple areas on the pants. Would recommend it don’t expect something long-term and durable.

These pants are great. Rugged, versatile (can be used as shorts), and good in the Pacific Northwest wet (they get wet but dry quickly). The cargo pockets allow me to carry my wallet in a way it won't hurt my back when driving or on a plane; couple this with their versatility and they are great "traveling pants".Beware of the non-cargo pockets!! They are made of a webbing that is not very durable. I have lost car keys, and a hotel key on separate occasions due to the pockets developing holes.3 suggestions for Columbia: 1) use a stronger material for the pockets. 2) have a lanyard with a key latch in a place where you could slip a key into a pocket, like on your Whirlibird IV jackets. 3) have more elastic material on the waist to accommodate a wider range of fits.

The only noticeable wear and tear was a hole in the seat from sitting down on my pack lantern after a bit too much Macallan 12 at the end of a long hike in the Smokeys. The only things on that mountain older than that scotch were my buddy and I and those pants...and maybe an old black bear. But my pants probably had that blackbear beat.The newer version appear even more durable, with a cool ripstop material. I like the straight legs on these, but hemmed in the inseam by 1.5" to give them a sleeker look--extremely easy to do for any guy.I rarely converted my old ones into shorts, but even that zipper held to the bitter end. Unfortunately it has been over a year so they are out of warranty. In reality though they haven’t been through rough wear and have only been washed at most 10 times. I actually have an older pair that has been through many more wash cycles and been worn many more times and the stitching is fine in that pair. With both pockets having the same problem, I consider it a manufacturing defect but since they are 2 months out of warranty, Columbia says there is nothing they can do. They recommended I take them to a local seamstress. I've owned 6 pair of these pants. 5 convertible cargo and one of the more expensive Utility Convertible cargo. Initially I loved them. Every single pair has had atlest one of the back pocket stitchings come out if not both back pockets. Additionally most of mine have had a front pocket stitching fail as well. I can't tell you how many times I've randomly had some content of my pockets slide down my leg mid hike. If this was a one off issue, no problem, stuff happens. But all of them. Forget it. I just paid $20 a pair more for the REI version of these cause I won't buy these again. It's not worth my frustration.
Bought these for my boyfriend for a fishing/kayak trip. They worked great to keep him covered from the sun. Perfect for him to be able to remove the legs when he got warm and needed to cool off a little. They are thin and dry pretty quickly when they get wet. Only issue we had was them developing a small tear near the back pocket. Could’ve gotten caught on something while he was kayaking but it seemed like they ripped very easily for something designed to be used outdoors. Otherwise very nice product.
