With not doing any hiking in the park prior to attempting the most challenging hike, we did not really know what clothing to wear, as it was an abnormally cold week for Utah. My brother opted for jeans and my cousin opted for sweat pants, but I was glad to have the security of knowing I had the option of both pants and shorts. As we walked up the trail, it became apparent that I would indeed need to take advantage of the shorts feature. Just before Walter’s Wiggles (the part of the trail with steep switchbacks), I decided to make the change. This brings up my only complaint about these pants- switching between modes. I sat down on the trail expecting to easily slip the bottoms over my shoes, but that was not possible. I sat there for a couple minutes with many people watching (many were complimenting my wise decision and were probably quite jealous), with one person even calling me “very European.” After a few minutes of struggle removing the calf covers, I finally got to shorts mode, which I must say is much more stylish than the pants mode. Walter’s Wiggles were a breeze in shorts mode and we finally reached the chained portion of the hike. There came a point where I did not wish to continue as I had just slipped on the ice. While the rest of my group continued to the top, I sat and waited in what proved to be a popular stopping point for people in the same situation as me. I discussed future plans with a fellow college student and even learned quite a bit of family medical history from another man who had recently recovered from a heart attack. During that time I also ate a string cheese, which I later found out my brother had specifically packed for himself. The rest of the hike included a re-zip and another un-zip of the calf covers, but I learned my lesson and took my shoes all the way off this time, making it much more efficient. It also included a surprising amount of snow and a painful descent down Walter’s Wiggles. Overall, it was a great day and these pants were crucial to my comfort throughout the hike. I can’t wait to wear them for my next hike!

These lightweight outdoor pants are enormously comfortable. Warm in cool weather, cool in warm weather. More stylish than the photos reveal. The material is mildew resistant in case you need to hand-wash and hang dry. Pockets secured by zippers or Velcro. Convertible to shorts. Mesh pockets. These high-tech pants are well worth the money. If you get stuck traveling or in temporary quarters with no laundry and don't drive, these pants are useful. Hand wash and hang dry. Hang near a window with sun or place in front of a small sun lamp to inhibit mildew. Get a shirt made of modal or a 70% modal polyester blend and you have the best anti-mildew combination available. Highly recommended.

Bought these to replace my old pair of trekking pants that are close to 20 yrs old. I trust Columbia’s quality. They fit great. I’m a medium tall and the 32/34 are perfect. Super construction and design. My only bugaboo is the color. Purchased “charcoal” as a good neutral color. The pants have a definite green hue. Not like any charcoal I’ve used. Makes the neutral color decidedly in-neutral. Otherwise, fantastic purchase.

I bought a pair of these for a week long trek at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. The only pants I wore for the whole week. Have worn for over 1000 miles of cumulative backpacking and look like the day I bought them.... literally. Excellent wicking characteristics and comfort. Bought a second pair this year just to have a back up.
I wanted to purchase these since they were released. I finally caught them on sale and grabbed the purple and black pair. They are extremely water resistant. I spilled a whole canteen of water on myself and the water rolled off like marbles. I was super glad! The pockets are super convenient and look super cool as well. I would absolutely want more of these in the future and for columbia to make more like it in the future. Seriously keep this style going guys it's amazing. In terms of durability, I wrenched through miles of burdock and brush with no tears or holes. They also have a soft interior that is comfy against the skin. They could be used in winter with a baselayer or spring on their own. I strongly recommend these. I prefer Khaki type colours of my pants but they only had black in my size. This started out as my hiking/backpacking convertible pants but they're so comfortable, I often wear them as an everyday pant. Slightly generous but not baggy fit allows freedom of movement. As some others have said, inseams run slightly short (good for me), so I would size up if you are in between sizes. The only change I would make is increasing the durability of the mesh pockets which, while quick-drying, often develop holes. I also like that there's lots of color choices.
some of the pockets are redesigned on the new model - the left hand cargo now has a vertical zip on the inside of the leg and the rhs back pocket no longer has a Velcrose tabbed flap.Note that sizing is small - a size 32” has a 32” waist using the stretch. Whereas many pants are sized 1” or more over their stated size (eg a size 30 fits 32” waist etc)Silver ridge pants are nigh on indestructible. They are excellent for warm weather and dry quickly. But are not for cold weather (and note that cinders from fire melt them).
The front pockets have a steep slit that goes way too far down so that things can fall out of the pockets too easily and they are a pickpockets dream. Otherwise, these are excellent pants. However, I'm going to return them. Pockets like this are unsuitable for rugged outdoor use. I'm surprised that Colombia would make a piece of clothing with such a serious design flaw.
