These lenses when open fully wide (f/1.2 for the 35mm, f/1.1 for the 50mm) are very soft, so shooting at f/2.2 in most cases is advisable.2. That being said, the bokeh on these lenses is very pretty and the soft vintage look is very beautiful.3. The lenses are both geared and clickless aperture. As a video shooter, do you know what that means? Precise focus pulling! Rack away!4. I really would advise using an external monitor with these lenses, else you will get punished when you go to review your footage5. As many other people have said, they are very heavy. I'm getting way better colors with this thank I was with my hodgepodge of vintage photo lenses.Overall an excellent intro into cin lenses.

Great value lens with dreamy look
3 October 2017

I've had this lens for a few weeks after debating between it and the Voigtlander Nokton 35mm 1.2, which I had rented to try out. For reference, I shoot a Sony A7rii, so it's a high-resolution camera and its easy to expose issues with lenses. I didn't do any rigorous side-by-side testing, and the following is just my opinion from using them both for about a week. These are certainly in the same ball park in terms of image quality and basically even in size/weight. I think the Voigtlander has the edge when shooting at f/1.2 or f/1.4. Vignetting, edge sharpness, and especially chromatic aberration are all more significant on the SLRMagic wide open. The bokeh on both are also quite smooth and pronounced. The SLRMagic logo on the lens cap makes it look like a fake or toy ... MoreI've had this lens for a few weeks after debating between it and the Voigtlander Nokton 35mm 1.2, which I had rented to try out. The SLRMagic logo on the lens cap makes it look like a fake or toy lens... you probably won't inspire a lot of gear envy with it if you care about that kind of thing. My guess is that this translates into the lens not really holding its value as well, either. However, I picked this lens up for $380 (vs the Voigtlander at $1000+adapter). So, if you asked me whether I would pay an additional $600+ to improve edge sharpness and reduce CA... no chance. Both lenses are small compared to most of their f/1.4 auto-focus counter-parts and both produce a very dreamy, cinematic style images. So, if you're looking for clinical precision, don't get either. Finally, I'd be remiss if I didn't stress that this is a cinema lens, whereas the Voigtlander is not. So, there are obviously things you can do with this lens that you can't with the Voigtlander, such as using belt gears or generally adjusting the aperture smoothly while shooting video. If you're looking for something that produces photos with a softer, more artistic look this lens is a fantastic value.

Hoping for a poor man's loxia
1 August 2018

I was hoping for a poor man's zeiss loxia but I guess when one lens is priced about a grand under the other....well.... it's not a loxia. It lacks the punch, the contrast, the sharpness, as I suppose it should at this price point. However, I think it has value as a video/cine lens - which is exactly what it is. If used as such, it has some character to it and provides a different, pleasing look to it. The bokeh is lovely and the image can be flattering for close-ups and dreamy for longer shots. It fits nicely on my A73, compact with a solid build. And in that respect it does remind me of the loxia lens. The big difference between the loxia and the magic, besides the image, is ease of use. I have shot handheld, street photography and even some run and gun video with the loxia with really excellent results. The Magic is much more difficult to use in these environments. For me, it's a lens that really requires some set-up time to ensure that the focus is being nailed (which is tricky) and after the shot, I need time again to re-focus and re-compose. What this means, in the real world (my real world, anyway) is that I can use my loxia for wedding work, for instance, and have great confidence in the results. I would be terrified to use the Magic in the same way. I'm going to keep it - and use it when it makes sense - in video production situations where I can control the elements and take my time with it. I urge you to see Philip Bloom's video using the lens. He gets great results with it. I would really struggle to obtain what he managed to, in that situation. Hopefully, I will get better with it and gain some confidence and extend my use.

Not your typical ILC lens
15 January 2020

This lens has a completely circular aperture. If that's important to you then this lens is exactly what your looking for. A CINEMA lens. For making movies. Not for weddings or events or corporate work but when using it to make your movie as a film maker. Now I'm not saying you cant use it for that kind of work but let's be honest if your shooting a wedding or an event you probably want something sharper with auto focus and some kind of flare resistance (coatings) cause thing is made to flare (lovely flares I might add). It vignettes like super old glass and the aperture and focus ring are perfect for handheld focus pulls. Not so great for tiny micro follow focuses but I have a old school (2009 era) RRmicro follow focus and that works but it's still kinda stiff. ... MoreThis lens has a completely circular aperture. Not so great for tiny micro follow focuses but I have a old school (2009 era) RRmicro follow focus and that works but it's still kinda stiff. Again great for pulling focus by hand. And the color is great, not like old glass color and not as colorful if that's the word like Zeiss glass but just right IMO. Really close to canon L glass COLOR. And the depth of field. Wow. I've never used focus peaking on my sony a7s cause it sucks but with this glass it works. I was in the market for old manual prime glass for filmmaking and I'm so glad I came across this. No need to convert an old nikon or canon FD. And just to drive the point home, its cinema glass with a circular aperture, long focus pull, long aperture pull, no barrel rotation during focusing, and heavy flares, with a sharpness that will make your actors with rough skin or a sensitive self image think your a genius. That's right kids, no diffusion filter necessary. BTW do yourself a favor and get a fader nd.

Pretty Amazing, Surpassed my expectations

I’ve been looking for a creative lens and a 35mm beyond the Sony F1.4. Knowing that Sigma has released a 35mm F1.2 that has great reviews, I wanted to give this little manual lens a chance to fight. I am very impressed with the center sharpness from MFD up to common portrait distances. At infinity it is really soft though. Nonetheless I tested it on my A7RIII and with that demanding sensor I am happy with the results I have been getting. Beautiful bokeh and unique wide angle images that make it easy to walk around with for photos. Manual focus and aperture rings are well dampened and I have had no issues manually focusing this lenses. I’ve only missed a few shots. Overall a great addition for creative photos and great bokeh are a fraction of the sigma autofocus lens ... MoreI’ve been looking for a creative lens and a 35mm beyond the Sony F1.4. For this review, keep in mind I mainly do video, and will only be using this lens for video. (I'm actually wondering why so many bought and are reviewing it as a stills lens, but I digress.) I shoot professionally mainly on a Sony a7sii.This is a "cine" lens in the fact that it's fully manual and has threaded focus rings for a focus puller. For the price, I think it's absolutely fantastic. I wouldn't compare it to the likes of high end cine lenses because it's not trying to be that type of lens. It's not in the same ballpark. With that said though, most cine lenses are for super35 sensors where as this one is for full frame. BIG PLUS. Yes, like most have said, it's softer in the corners, but I was pleasantly surprised at how clear and sharp it was in the center ... MoreFor this review, keep in mind I mainly do video, and will only be using this lens for video. Yes, like most have said, it's softer in the corners, but I was pleasantly surprised at how clear and sharp it was in the center and on the thirds. Actually, I was stunned. In my opinion it's good glass and has a solid construction. Good weight, small size (especially for a full frame lens!), good focus ring. The small size allows me to go handheld and to get into some tight spaces. It also doesn't look like a big cinema lens, so you can do some sneaky shooting where you're not supposed to ;)I also purchased the ND filter separately which is very high quality and helps produce a great image. Love the little handle that comes off the side for quick adjustments in daylight. Overall it just has a really nice look to it. Sort of dreamy, sort of creamy, dare I say...cinematic? It's hard to explain in words, but check some sample shots that have been graded. It produces just some great, detailed footage. How I Use It: This lens and focal length was perfect for me as a handheld lens. I do a lot of mini-documentary style ads, and this is a great lens to go handheld with (as long as your camera has internal stabilization). It's small, nondescript, and easy to maneuver.I also just love the 35mm focal length for creating that conversational and realistic feel for the audience.I would highly recommend anyone to pick up this lens and give it a go. I think you'll be pretty amazed at the results.

Shallow Depth & Colors
13 November 2022

This lens creates beautiful videos with shallow depth at 1.2, though it's soft at wide aperture but it's worth it. The build and focus ring is solid. Those who love manual focus lens and shallow depth with beautiful colors straight outta it, that's for you!Do that think, just buy it.

Surprisingly excellent, exceptional value. Imperfect but well worth every penny
2 February 2021

Couldn't infinity focus out of the box, but it took about ten minutes of adjusting to get it fixed. Likely just my copy. Reasonably sharp when stopped down, quite soft at f1.2. Stunning and affordable lens, particularly after the bhphotovideo sales flooded the market with new copies for $200. Bit awkward for photography as it has cine gearing, but overall it's been a lovely experience to use it. Would strongly recommend at the current sales prices, as a lightweight 35mm f1.2 is a lovely sight. Outside of extremely mild optical imperfections such as softness wide open, it's smaller than my 35mm f1.8. The fact it works at this price point is honestly enough, given the cost of other E-Mount 35mm f1.2 lenses.
