Lovely little case, the Pi 4 snaps in perfectly and it looks lovely. However, it needs some vents. The Pi 4 is a hot beast - much more so than it's predecessors, and running anything remotely taxing sends it into overdrive. Because the unit fits so well, it's a very enclosed space and internal heat rapidly builds up to the point the Pi 4 starts to throttle itself. The little temperature gauge appears on the desktop and it slows down.Removing the top and keeping it open helps keep it just under this level. A few slots in the top, and a fan on the Pi and it would run fine.until a new case appears, it is the only choice, but I loop forward to an update. Until then, I'm going to cut some vents in myself for now.

I've been a fan of the Official Raspberry Pi product line from the start (I think I have one of everything including the mug) so when I got the new RPi 4 the choice of case was obvious; I even waited for it to come back in to stock. I did consider the PiBow alternative as I have the PiBow case for my Pi3+A which is running a tvHat but, with the PiBow cases being more open I worry about dust accumulating and so I prefer the enclosed cases especially the official Raspberry Pi models. The finishing, detailing and even packaging are almost but not quite Apple-esque (its only a fraction of an Apple price after all). The Pi fits perfectly in the case and the lid simply clips on. So assembly is simple enough.Diverging from previous official case designs, this case doesn't have the option to remove side panels or to open the sun roof to attach HATs, access camera ports etc. and as others have noted the RPi 4 does run hotter than most so even though I'm not intending to attach a HAT to it, I can see that I might need to remove the lid while its operating. If I wanted to attach a HAT or found it necessary to add the Fan shim or heatsink then I might be persuaded to choose the a different style case, but at the moment this case suits my purpose. Its nicely designed, good quality and not too expensive - does the job.Only four stars because of the lack of the opening sides and opening top access panel of its predecessors.

Any case that doesn't take into account the excessive heat generated by the Pi 4"s CPU is pointless and a waste of money. With the Pi 4 installed and the lid clipped on, as it is designed to do, the chip gets so hot that the case feels like it might melt! Mine reached 85 Deg C which is ridiculously hot, and throttled back. The temperature never dropped below 80 Deg C unless I removed the lid. This makes the case pointless as the Pi rattles around loose in a case with no lid.Surely a case which is designated "official" should take the heat problem into account and be designed to accommodate a fan!I've just wasted my money on this.

Sadly, I ended up having to return this. Even at idle, the Pi 4 runs far too hot for this case to be used with the lid closed. With the lid open, it seems as if the board is simply on a slat of plastic, which is a bit unsatisfying. When I had the case I didn't have a fan for the Pi 4 yet; however, I don't imagine a fan would anything other than circulating hot air inside the case: There isn't anywhere for the hot air to go.Truthfully, I had better luck with a Raspberry Pi 3 case with the plastic bits that sits between the USB and Ethernet ports removed with an xacto knife. At least with that you can leave the top flap and side cover on the GPIO side open to keep things cool; and the board is still enclosed for some protection. Works fine, easy to clip together. It does increase CPU temperature quite significantly; temperature dropped about 8C after I removed the lid and another 8C when I took the board out of the case completely.
This case looks good and fits like a glove... but with no ventilation whatsoever it's essentially an oven for the Raspberry Pi.My Pi idles at 65'C in this case and easily gets up to 75'C+ when working. The CPU starts to automatically throttle at 80'C and it's not good for components (e.g. SD card) to be that hot so regularly.Just by leaving the lid off the case the temperature drops by 10'C, without using a fan or a heat sink. I'm therefore not sure why they didn't include any holes for ventilation on this case! (though of course you could always drill your own)
I bought this container to prevent me accidentally damaging my new pi 4. It fits nicely but remember to take the memory card out before fitting it.Note that there is no room to attach wires to the GPIOs with the box top on. This is not a problem for me because I'm using it as a server. This limitation means I have scored it 4 star rather than 5
The case is very well build, nice quality plastic and fits together perfectly. It looks great too in red and was really looking forward to putting them on display. However, the big problem is overheating. Even with the large aluminium heatsink inside this case, the CPU on the Pi4 idles at 80C when placed in the cupboard. This is a deal breaker for me as it results in almost instant thermal throttling. I eventually replaced then with full aluminium cases which dropped the idle temperature by 20C. Very nice but impractical for me :(
The case is well made and provides plenty of protection for for your RPi4, but it's not nearly as modular as the previous version. You can't remove the side panels and there's no independent lid on the main top. This means you can't access the GPIO pins without remove the upper half of the case. Also with the top in place, the case is completely sealed so there is no ventilation :-(. The RPi4 does run hotter than the previous versions. In a test I left myRPi4 sealed in the case, and even idling it was hitting temperatures of 80C. With the lid off that dropped to 60C. At the least I'd have preferred a case that had some ventilation holes in it, or ideally a lid you could remove while still leaving the RPi4 securely held in the case. The critics were not exaggerating when they said the pi runs hot in this case.I have added a small heatsink to my raspberry pi 4.With the top lid on, the pi idles at 66C and reaches 80C and starts throttling hard after about 3-4 minutes with all cores at 100%.With the top lid off, the pi idles at 55C and it takes about 15 min. with all cores at 100% before the CPU reaches 80C and it starts to throttle a little bit. That's 11C degrees fewer at idle and more than 10 minutes more of intensive processing before throttling with the top lid removed!!Even when throttling the pi will still perform noticeably better with the top lid off because the throttling is a lot less severe.I strongly suggest at least drilling some ventilation holes in the case to allow the ...Β MoreThe critics were not exaggerating when they said the pi runs hot in this case.I have added a small heatsink to my raspberry pi 4.With the top lid on, the pi idles at 66C and reaches 80C and starts throttling hard after about 3-4 minutes with all cores at 100%.With the top lid off, the pi idles at 55C and it takes about 15 min. with all cores at 100% before the CPU reaches 80C and it starts to throttle a little bit. That's 11C degrees fewer at idle and more than 10 minutes more of intensive processing before throttling with the top lid removed!!Even when throttling the pi will still perform noticeably better with the top lid off because the throttling is a lot less severe.I strongly suggest at least drilling some ventilation holes in the case to allow the heat to escape if you want to use this case with the top lid on.The case looks nice and the pi fits really nicely inside it, so I won't give it the worst rating because of that but the thermal issues make it a terrible product.
