The vet recommended my recently diagnosed diabetic cat be fed Hill's WD dry. After much research and then comparing Purina DM dry to what my vet recommended, I discovered the Purina DM was much lower in carbs and had comparable protein to Hill's - a high protein/low carb diet is best to aid in controlling glucose levels. I was actually able to lower my cat's BG number by feeding canned pate grain free food and topping with freeze dried raw treats/toppers. I keep the DM dry available to supplement. My cat did not like the Hill's kibble. The Purina DM is also formulated to help prevent urinary crystals.

I delved into the truth behind the ingredients of this so-called diabetic management cat food, only to be appalled by the formulation. Despite diabetic cats requiring a high-protein, low-carb diet, the top ingredients are MEAT BY-PRODUCT WATER and then chicken – a major red flag. The inclusion of corn starch, artificial flavors, and soy, known to be harmful to diabetic cats, adds to the horror. This is false advertising, exploiting feline medical conditions to push a subpar product. Compare this to VETDIET SENIOR CAT FOOD – affordable and with 100% chicken protein as the VERY FIRST INGREDIENT, followed by pork liver and chicken broth, NO ADDED WATER! It's insane, absolutely frightening, and disheartening. BEWARE AND DON'T BE FOOLED!!!"

Do not feed a diabetic cat this food. It is around 20% carbs by dry weight; which is way too high for a cat with diabetes. You need to feed a diabetic cat under 10% carbs by dry weight. My cats insulin requirements were 3 times higher on this food compared to a cheap wet food like fancy feast (turkey and giblets, which is 3-4% carbs by dry weight). He needed 3 units of insulin on this food; he needs 1 on low carb wet food. If your cat WON'T eat wet food and you've tried (only feed them wet food for a week and see if they take to it), then you can feed them Dr. Elsey's dry food. It is cheaper and around 10% carbs by dry weight. It guarantees they get the water they need everyday as the wet food is 72-75% water.

I was given a sample of Purina DM by my vet for my recently diagnosed diabetic cat (resulted from only a week of prednisolone). I was skeptical due to the ingredients (poultry by-products, soy, corn gluten meal are top 3 ingredients) and it's not less than the recommended 10% carb on Feline Diabetes sites. Within 24 hrs I had to discontinue as my cat was living by the water dish, more lethargic and just not looking or acting like himself. Returned to his normal kibble in which I am phasing in a <1% carb kibble over 10-14 days. Returned him to the high protein pate he spurned when I started Purina DM. He's chirpier and drinking far less water. Do not see how this product could ever be beneficial to a diabetic cat.
Don't bother buying unless you're 100% sure your cat will eat it. I cut open the bag and my diabetic cat won't eat it. And chewy wants me to return an opened bag of dry food before I can be refunded. Sure let me just let it spill everywhere. Stupidest thing I've ever been told. "It's case by case" so because this item is expensive I have to package up an opened bag of food for them to just throw away rather than let me donate to my local vets and also just waste my money. Thanks chewy makes perfect sense.
My 17 year old and diabetic male cat is still going strong because of his diet. He eats DM canned and DM dry. He has had pancreatitis and once we switched to DM he has overcome . I only wish we could have anyone except FEDEX for delivery. I order a case monthly and dry kibbles every 3 months. My delivery driver won’t go up the 2 steps to the porch . The case is also not lying flat but it is standing up on end and not on my porch.I have tried to address this but it was not successful. Maverick loves DM but we may have to change delivery method.
I originally got this product because we took our cat in for yearly lab work and discovered she’s pre-diabetic. She’s. eight years old the vet gave me a sample of the food, but I never saw the entire packaging. And even though I’m sure it was explained how the food works for my cat. It wasn’t until I went on Chewys site. Saw the cutest video that describe my cats needs and what this food did for her. Only then did it really connect with me. Also, I realize even though I never saw the packaging because the sample was given to me in a baggie I realized I had the correct food based on the presentation. I just want to say thank you for calling that extra for people like me who need a little more understanding. It really helped me. In addition, this is my first time using Chewy. as soon as my vet approved it the next day My order was out the door. The service was extremely fast and I also appreciate the shipping method used. i’m impressed with everything about chewy. Thank you so much and you have a very happy Customer
My cat developed pretty dramatic diabetes-- very lethargic, loss feeling in his back legs, walking flat on his hocks, not able to jump very well etc-- so my vet recommended switching him to a wet food ASAP, but since he'd never had wet food and he was a very picky eater, she also prescribed him this DM kibble to eat in the meantime while I could slowly introduce a decent low-carb wet food because she wanted him 100% off the Blue Buffalo I was feeding him immediately. I only took a couple days to transition him completely over and he took to it pretty much right away! Since then I've also switched him over to a (nearly) 100% wet diet, and over the past year has fully recovered in remission and regained all his strength, energy and healthy weight. Since then I've also switched him over to a (nearly) 100% wet diet, and over the past year has fully recovered in remission and regained all his strength, energy and healthy weight. However he still can't get enough of this stuff and begs for it every night after his wet dinner, so I still let him have maybe 1/8th cup of it in his treat ball for dessert. It also makes a good topper; sometimes if he's being stubborn about finishing his wet food I'll grind up some of the DM pieces and sprinkle it on top, then he eats all of it right away.So I can't speak to how much it helps diabetes by itself since I put him on wet food as soon as I could, but he definitely LOVES it and that's honestly half the battle when your cat is sick AND a picky eater.
I switch between this and the dm soft food. My cat tends to get sick of the same thing every day, so going between the two really helps. He likes them both, so I’ll keep ordering both.Side note; my non diabetic cat also LOVES this food. I did read that there’s no harm in non diabetic cats eating it, it’s just super expensive so I don’t typically let her invade my diabetic cats plate. But she does try every chance she gets! :D
My mothers cat was very fat and diagnosed with diabetes. He was unable to walk and dragged his hind legs around. He could not get in or out of his litter box. It was so sad. I asked the vet for this prescription food after reading the reviews on Chewy. This dry food is the best! He has been eating it now and loves it, for about 6 months. He has lost approx. 8 lbs, which he needed to loose and is now walking. His hind legs are still weak but the improvement is remarkable. I highly recommend you try this food if your cat has diabetes:-)
