The original #3776 series was designed by the late writing expert Haruo Umeda, known as “Mr. Fountain Pen,” along with the design team at Platinum Pen Company. Their aim was simple- to create the ideal fountain pen. The #3776 was made available to the public beginning in 1978. #3776 expresses the height in meters of Mt. Fuji, the highest and most beautiful peak in Japan. The innovative cap contains a unique “Slip & Seal” mechanism that prevents ink from drying out in the pen. Meanwhile, a newly redesigned nib and feed regulate the ink flow. Founded in 1919, Platinum Pens is now nearing a full century of achievement. The #3776 “Century” celebrates this approaching anniversary and continues Platinum Pens’ tradition of technological innovation. With Platinum Pens, the pleasure of writing and the use of fine writing instruments will always be evolving. The fountain pen has a 14kt gold nib and uses the Platinum converter or ink cartridges, but with the special Ink Cartridge Adapter it is also possible to use the Standard International ink cartridges. In 1919, Shunichi Nakata, started his fountain pen business that would later be known as “Platinum Fountain Pen Co.”. The Japanese brand is closely related to the legendary Nakaya fountain pen brand, where some of the finest fountain pens in the world are created. This expertise also goes into Platinum's own line of fine writing instruments.

Plus, it’s not a fussy, “high maintenance” pen, either. It is one of those fountain pens that is easy to carry, is expensive enough to the point where the nib is good quality and once you get to writing with it, is hardly ever scratchy and doesn’t skip (except when the cartridge needs to be replaced). Please disregard my previous negative review of the Platinum 3776 Century Fountain Pen. The Platinum 3776 Century Fountain Pen with medium nib is a fine “Intermediate” level fountain pen: It offers great performance at a relatively low price. I would definitely recommend it - especially if you are looking for a moderately priced “luxury kind of pen” with both luxurious looks and solid performance.

I've had this pen 10 years, I am a pen and ink artist and tutor. I draw nearly everyday with this pen and the Platinum Carbon black ink. You can get amazing variation of line width from the back of the nib fine to a good medium broad stroke under pressure. Initially I bought other more expensive pens but this one is the go to. The slip and seal mechanism on this pen means that I can use this pen as an auxiliary pen without worrying about the pen drying out, which makes it especially suitable for this use case. The fact that it matches with my Platinum #3776 Music nib so well also helps.

Lightweight and Pretty
30 October 2023

This is my first gold nib pen after a few years of using steel nibs. I did my research very thoroughly, as I wanted a gold nib that looked nice but also had a fine nib for thin writing. I'm so in love! It writes beautifully, with a slight feedback that makes me 'feel' what I'm writing. Not scratchy, but close. Sheening ink still flows, but I do notice it has a tendency to clog slightly, so just something to keep in mind. It is more lightweight than what I had thought, but that has actually come to make the writing experience much better. My hand doesn't tire as easily as with heavier pens, and it's easy to slip it in my pocket, purse, or pen bag. I also like that the extra fine nib doesn't write wet, as it lets me use different inks on bad paper without it bleeding ... MoreThis is my first gold nib pen after a few years of using steel nibs. Nice, but...
25 October 2024

The pen writes very nicely. The gold nib does what I hoped it would do: create a flexible and satisfying writing experience. That said, the look of the body of the pen is...somewhat disappointing. Yes, I saw on the website the closeup photos of it, so I knew what I was getting. Once in hand, though, it looks kinda like a cheap semi-clear plastic. A lovely color, but it just doesn't look like it should've cost +$200. The gold trim, yes, I get that; it's lovely. And, again, I acknowledge I'm paying for the gold nib. It's just the overall feeling of value I like to have a little better than this, for spending that much (quite a lot for me) on a pen.

Thanks bharath for promptly answering my queries. I ordered this pen along with pilot sterling silver and sailor 1911L ( from william penn ).Unlike pilot this is not that smooth and silky to write , it doesn't have that scratchy feedback like sailor nibs. Overall I found it to be pretty ordinary pen , not worth 20k.Put in some more money to get either pilot or sailor nibs

I am a Japanese student who needs to write kanji and write them very, very small. I started off with a set of Kakunos and I had an EF vanishing point that was stolen, and I was recommended if I wanted to get even smaller to use a Platinum 3776. From the reviews I saw, visually and through text, it seemed like I could actually get smaller. Goulet's page said it didn't include a converter, so I grabbed a converter too when I bought it. Wait a while for it to get here and... It comes with its own converter. That was mildly upsetting but hey, might be a mistake, and I did get the gold one that matches, fine. I do a writing test with my various pens to see the scaling difference. Platinum 3776 turns out to be no finer than my Kakuno EF, about as wet as my Kakuno F, and an order of magnitude more expensive than either. It may be a good go-to pen for writing with exceptionally dry inks on a tiny scale, but for what I bought it for - to have a good pen capable of writing beyond EF widths, I am sorely disappointed.

Platinum Perfection

There are times when we buy a product on the basis of advertisements or the reviews and opinions of others. In some cases, the product turns out to be just what we expected and we are satisfied, but it may sometimes be otherwise. In the case of the Platinum 3776 that I got, the product is absolutely superb. I expected a very nice pen, but I got an extraordinary pen, and it is the perfect size and weight for writing with the cap posted. The 14K medium nib makes just the right line on paper and blue ink is exactly the shade of blue that I like. The Platinum 3776 is an excellent fountain pen in its price range. Very Nice Pen

I bought this pen in EF, and even though I am usually a big fan of Japanese EF and F nibs, this one is very much a needle and not quite as smooth as I had hoped (maybe if I tune it a bit I can get it to be a bit more pleasant to write with). The acrylic is darker than I expected. The blue is gorgeous when held up to bright light, but in anything dimmer the blue is very hard to discern. For example, in my pen storage box with cream colored inserts the pen appears to be black. That was not what I expected. I have wanted the pen since it came on the market precisely because it is an homage to the blue used in the stained glass windows of Chartres Cathedral in France - a very famous blue that I have loved since I was very young. While I can appreciate that blue when I hold the pen up to the light, it is not possible to write that way! Perhaps if one only uses it outside on sunny days? It's a very nice pen. Platinum pens are great and I have and enjoy several from cheap to shamefully expensive but this one is probably my least favorite of the lot, which doesn't mean it's a bad pen, it's just not one of my more favored pens.

Very nice pen; two minor nits
29 August 2019

It is a beautiful pen that writes well. I have two minor things to nit-pick:1. It is much lighter than I expected. Brian mentioned in a Q&A episode once (I'm paraphrasing) that as Americans we tend to think of sturdier and heavier objects as higher quality, while the Japanese tend to appreciate lighter weight and more 'delicate' objects. I can't yet comment on the long term durability, but this is definitely a light pen and I'd be afraid to have it roll off the desk. As a bigger guy I appreciate a pen with a little more heft.2. There is a clicking sound from the body of the pen with movement when the included cartridge is installed. I've read there is a similar clicking problem with a converter. There is a clicking sound from the body of the pen with movement when the included cartridge is installed. I've read there is a similar clicking problem with a converter. With the included cartridge I think this is because there is a small metal ball that rolls around, likely to keep the ink from hardening. I'm not sure why the converter would make any noise, and haven't tried it yet myself.Because of these two things I personally rate the pen a 4/5. Others may not be bothered by either. Overall I'm glad to have invested in this as my first 'nice' fountain pen. Also a note that at the time I purchased this it was advertised as coming with both a cartridge and a converter. Mine did not come with a converter, but I contacted CS and they made it right for me. Just be aware that if this is still advertised as coming with one it may not. Because CS addressed this for me I didn't knock any stars off for it. Goulet Pens rocks!
