I've had this pen 10 years, I am a pen and ink artist and tutor. I draw nearly everyday with this pen and the Platinum Carbon black ink. You can get amazing variation of line width from the back of the nib fine to a good medium broad stroke under pressure. Initially I bought other more expensive pens but this one is the go to. Finally, a pen with a nib that lets me write small. I've used a lot of extra fine nibs, but it always felt like I was writing with a felt-tipped marker. This one was different. If I could, I'd share a writing sample so you could see the difference. This pen is technically a demonstrator, but you can't easily see inside. If you hold it next to a lightbulb, you can check ink levels, but most of the time, it just looks like a solid, dark burgundy. In some lighting the pen looks black. In others, you can see light reflecting off the converter inside. It's a neat effect. If you look really close, you can see that (when capped) the clip aligns with the nib. On the other hand, I don't know that I ever want to use another writing implement. Lord help my wallet if this thing breaks, because I'll be back here buying a replacement the moment it does.

I purchased the ultra extra fine & the pen writes like a dream. The nib appears to be finer than the EFs I have in Namiki, Sailor, & Parker (and certainly Pelikan). I tend not to be fond of transparent fountain pens, but this appeared fairly opaque for a demonstrator. I have a dark red Namiki and I prefer it's appearance to the Bourgogne Platinum. This is simply a matter of preference however. My biggest (and only) complaint involves comfort. When I hold the pen to write, the sharp edges above & below the part of the pen's body onto which the cap screws cuts into my fingers. I will try to attach a photo to compare the smoothness of the Namiki with the Platinum's much more prominent edges. I wish they had not designed the pen this way. It writes finer than the Namiki ... I give this pen four-stars rather than five simply due to my personal preferences. I bought this pen based on the great reviews here as well as Youtube. The novelty of this pen is what I call the stay wet nib feature in the cap. Personally, I don't think it is a necessary feature, as most FP users I know never keep a pen inked and not used for months at a time, let alone a couple of years. Most of us use ours once a week at least, if we are the rotaters. The pen seems well made, nice nib (though I'm going to do some extra smoothing on mine), and the threads and step-down while noticeable (especially the step-down) are not irritating to me. The body materials (mine is the Bourgogne) are nice looking, but not spectacular. It's a deep red, which is why I bought this ... The body materials (mine is the Bourgogne) are nice looking, but not spectacular. It's a deep red, which is why I bought this for my red inks, but there is not the sense of depth via some sort of pearl essence I was expecting. Granted, none of the photos gave that impression, just some of the reviewers on Youtube seemed to gush at the color such that it gave me the impression that there was more to the color than what I could detect via photos and videos. Still it is that nice dark red wine tone that communicates warmth. This pen does not come with a converter, which for the typical retail price I think it should. Besides the novel cap, there isn't anything really spectacular about this pen. The barrels materials I believe are made by injection molding process. If so Platinum has done a good job with buffing out the typical indications of such a process. As far as not having a converter I just hacked the included cartridge, filling it with some Diamine Ox Blood (Yo, really nice ink!)Perhaps the higher price of this pen is due, in addition to the novel cap, to the gold nib. That is a nice touch, but in use it is no different than a good gold plated steel nib (unless you are a genuine nib connoisseur). This is NOT a flex nib, and is not advertised as such. There is little to no line variation unless you exert a lot of energy, which I would not suggest. It is a #6 nib, which I like. The nib lays down a nice line and starts right away every time, even if left uncapped, or loosely capped for a short time. I have the medium nib, which basically writes like a European wet fine nib. The size of the pen is best for those with really small hands, or you like to post your pen. I have small hands, and while this pen isn't irritatingly short it is noticeable, and a little short of my preference. As a comparison, the Pilot Custom 823 is a perfect size for me. By doing a comparison in the Pen Plaza (great GP feature) I knew this would be the case, so it's not like I was so shocked and want to return it. Posted this pen fits nicely, but is a bit too top heavy for me. Except for my Kaweco Sport I don't post any of my pens. The weight of the pen is very light. For long writing sessions this would be a great advantage. I do prefer a bit more weight, but that isn't a deal breaker for me. So there you have it. So, there you have my two cents worth.
I bought this pen for everyday writing in office, and it works perfect for this purpose. I picked this pen specifically for it's reputation of light in hand, writes like a mechanical pencil, turns out all the reviewers are right about that! Some things you should know before committing to your purchase: this pen has a TINY grip section. In the attached picture, from the top, they are 3776, Pilot Falcon, Pilot Prera, Metropolitan, and Lamy 2000; the place red arrow points to has a noticeable step, unless you don't care about the step, the grip section effectively ends there, which is a tiny space even for my small hand.Having a such small grip section means your fingers are somewhat fixed in place, any finger-movement based writing will have the side of your fingers ... So if you plan to do any type of traveling journal, writing on a small notebook that requires you to adjust your grip as you approach the edge of the notebook, the step becomes irritating. If you have a plenty of space, write on a relatively normal sized (A4) notepad, and use your arms (muscle-movement) instead of finger-movement to write, this fountain pen will be the perfect workhorse for you!
The pen writes very nicely. The gold nib does what I hoped it would do: create a flexible and satisfying writing experience. That said, the look of the body of the pen is...somewhat disappointing. Yes, I saw on the website the closeup photos of it, so I knew what I was getting. Once in hand, though, it looks kinda like a cheap semi-clear plastic. A lovely color, but it just doesn't look like it should've cost +$200. The gold trim, yes, I get that; it's lovely. And, again, I acknowledge I'm paying for the gold nib. It's just the overall feeling of value I like to have a little better than this, for spending that much (quite a lot for me) on a pen.
The conclusion first. The Platinum 3776 puts a fine line of ink on paper, almost without touching. I like the Platinum. not love it, we have come to terms. It is in the collection to stay. What I like. The cap screws on with two turns, the first 1 and 3/4 are loose and the last 1/4 turn is a smooth constant resistance. I am not tempted to torque the cap down to feel safe from the pen opening in a pocket. The fit and finish is excellent.A careful grasp is needed. The grip length is somewhat short from the flare at the nib to the beginning of the cap threads and the cap seat. The writing is smooth for an extra fine nib on smooth paper only. The more texture the paper has the less smooth it becomes. As a left handed writer I push the pen across the paper, a right ... MoreThe conclusion first. The more texture the paper has the less smooth it becomes. As a left handed writer I push the pen across the paper, a right handed pulls the pen aiding smoothness. In fairness, the Platinum writes as smoothly as three other pens in my collection with fine nibs. In general, the wider the nib the smoother the writing.A white pen is rare, no one will mistakenly put it in their pocket thinking it was theirs. Though they will enjoy it even with feeling slightly guilty.
There are times when we buy a product on the basis of advertisements or the reviews and opinions of others. In some cases, the product turns out to be just what we expected and we are satisfied, but it may sometimes be otherwise. In the case of the Platinum 3776 that I got, the product is absolutely superb. I expected a very nice pen, but I got an extraordinary pen, and it is the perfect size and weight for writing with the cap posted. The 14K medium nib makes just the right line on paper and blue ink is exactly the shade of blue that I like. The Platinum 3776 is an excellent fountain pen in its price range. This pen is to commemorate my latest book, always a special occasion, and perhaps you need to commemorate something special with a Platinum 3776.
I received it promptly! In safe and perfect condition! But I haven't put ink in it yet, so I don't have any answers yet!! I will probably replace the (black?) ink in the cartridge with one of my bottled inks. I do have empty cartridges for this brand, and filled ones, but I haven't decided what color to use! Do you want to send this email back in about a month?!!! I do have white (orange ink) and green with green ink, and quickly bought this one, to get another ultra extra fine nib!! Thank you all for your business! I'm glad you followed God's guidance to grow this business out of your garage!! You must be tithing to be receiving His blessings all these years!!! It is a beautiful pen that writes well. I have two minor things to nit-pick:1. It is much lighter than I expected. Brian mentioned in a Q&A episode once (I'm paraphrasing) that as Americans we tend to think of sturdier and heavier objects as higher quality, while the Japanese tend to appreciate lighter weight and more 'delicate' objects. I can't yet comment on the long term durability, but this is definitely a light pen and I'd be afraid to have it roll off the desk. As a bigger guy I appreciate a pen with a little more heft.2. There is a clicking sound from the body of the pen with movement when the included cartridge is installed. I've read there is a similar clicking problem with a converter. There is a clicking sound from the body of the pen with movement when the included cartridge is installed. I've read there is a similar clicking problem with a converter. With the included cartridge I think this is because there is a small metal ball that rolls around, likely to keep the ink from hardening. I'm not sure why the converter would make any noise, and haven't tried it yet myself.Because of these two things I personally rate the pen a 4/5. Others may not be bothered by either. Overall I'm glad to have invested in this as my first 'nice' fountain pen. Also a note that at the time I purchased this it was advertised as coming with both a cartridge and a converter. Mine did not come with a converter, but I contacted CS and they made it right for me. Just be aware that if this is still advertised as coming with one it may not. Because CS addressed this for me I didn't knock any stars off for it. Goulet Pens rocks!
