I miss the old 28L design...

But I have only had the pack for a couple of weeks.-The laptop case is a nice addition, but to note, I have a MacBook Pro M1 16" and luckily it fits perfectly. Which was a surprise because the website says it will only fit a 15" so just know it will actually hold a 16" with no issues.Where it falls short:For some reason, Patagonia did not include divider pockets inside the pack to separate the laptop case and your water bladder or small items in the first big pocket. This oversight is very concerning because water bladders can leak and you will have no separation from the water bladder and your most expensive piece of equipment. Namely your laptop. The pocket front pocket for easy access located at the top of the pack for your essentials has moved from a big pocket that opened up the length of the bag in the Refugio Daypack 28L to a much smaller pocket that sits on the top of the bag. Once you put some of your essentials into the pocket the bag sags and looks strange when you wear it, it's like they forgot about gravity and how it affects a full pack. So you have to move most items to the second pocket which is really deep and the openings to get to your gear are too small so it makes it really hard to get to your items which are now in one big pile inside a deep pocket with a narrow opening. The old design was far superior in this and many other regards.I would say the biggest disadvantage of this new design is:The pack does not have enough pockets inside any of the sleeves to separate your gear based on your needs. instead, you just have two deep pockets and that leaves you with a pile of gear to dig through to find what you need coupled with small openings it makes it really difficult to get at/find your items. The old design allowed you to open the pockets almost the whole length of the pack and that allowed you to see your items really easily, thus saving time.I would do anything to get my hands on the Refugio Daypack 28L of days past. Just sayin'With the exception of colours, the old design was superior in every way. If you could bring that back and include the laptop case you would have the best pack ever. Hey, a guy can dream. Let me know if you want any clarity on any of this. Happy to help.

The built-in, non-removable padding in the laptop compartment of the Chacabuco permanently subtracts from available storage space, and of course fails to provide any protection for my laptop when removed through security. Always keep an obvious size difference between overhead "luggage" and underseat "personal item", even if it means upsizing your overhead to the max to make a medium daypack as a personal item look legit - I got busted once for having two personal sized daypacks (I was expecting credit for keeping my overhead smaller but got an unexpected opposite reaction).2. Wheelie (or spinner) overhead, 26L Refugio underseat. 26L underseat is a lot of bag to stow underseat, and only necessary for me when departing with winter puff jacket and arriving in a tropical climate - underpacking the underseat bag pays off when I need to shed the excess insulation. Also useful to max out overhead (45L usually the max) and seatside (30L usually the max) if aiming for no checked luggage.3. Black Hole 40L duffel overhead (I like this size better than the 45L MLC, but mourn the loss of a laptop slot). The lack of a laptop slot overhead forces me to the 26L Refugio to get the benefits of that removable padded laptop sleeve. But then I get punished with no leg room, unless I can sneak my personal item overhead, stacking it on the Black Hole Duffel.Only $20 separates the 26L and 30L Refugios. You should inspect both in-store. Generally I find it's better to go larger and underpack, than go smaller and have to stuff to the gills. So I favor the 30L. But a lot of people just fill whatever space they have, and in that case 26L is much saner around town.

My bag for life
5 August 2023

I am a farmer, Farming educator, a naturalist and a writer. I spend 8-10 hours outside in the field every day. I needed a day bag that I can fit my life in and still navigate tight spots, throw in the back seer of my truck and count on to keep it all safe and protected. The refugio 30l fits the Bill. This product holds my lap top (in a removable paddedPouch), field guides, journal and all the other documents I may need for the day. In a separate compartment I can stow a hoody or rain jacket and some tools. Itsalso big enough to pack for weekend road trip but not so big its bulky and cumbersome. I have only had it for a couple weeks but it has met all my expectations and more.

Nice build, poor organization
25 April 2023

Overall the backpack is made well and really light, but it's almost as if the people who designed it don't actually use it for everyday use.The pack lacks organization for smaller items. It has one smaller pouch on the top and a laptop organizer with zippers, but you have to take it out to access it.If you fill the smaller pouch at the top with items, the whole backpack slouches in due to the weight.I miss the old Refugio backpack design with a sunglasses pouch on top and a middle vertical zipper with organization inside the zipper.Really wanted to like this backpack, but I think I have to return it.

No organization
14 September 2023

I do like the rugged look of the backpack, the main compartment is pretty spacious, and I use it for high school. However, there is barely any organization in the backpack. It only has 3 pockets, including one small pocket in the front that does not hold very much. Also, when you put things in the small pocket it can get squeezed from the things in the main compartment. It does have a removable laptop sleeve with pockets, but you have to take it in and out to access your items, and it becomes very inconvenient. I do have enough room to fit all of my books and binders, but I need more room to fit my pencil pouch, earbuds, wallet, and other small items. Unfortunately I only realized how little space there is for small items after removing the tags and using it. Needed a backpack I could use for work that was spacious and comfortable for the 40 min walking commute. Ultimately decided on the Refugio when I saw the separate compartments and the included laptop sleeve. Great backpack! The mesh bottle holders could be improved, they’re not the best support for my heavy water bottles and rip easily. Also, I know it’s not the norm for daily use backpacks but a waist strap would make this even more comfortable. Maybe a future optional one we can add retroactively so I don’t have to buy a new bag! Otherwise a buy it for lifer.

Solid simple efficient handsome backpack

For my use, this is a simple well designed and constructed backpack. So far it seems to have the features I want and not the features I don't want. The laptop sleeve is light and removable. The two main compartments are rounded rectangles and provide a usefully shaped space without excess bulk. They are easily accessible. The smaller pouch on the back side is not subdivided, so to can be used for medium size items, or I store small items (pencils, compass, meds, cards etc. in a few ziplog bags for easy access. The side pouches for water bottles seem to securely hold a full Nalgene, although I haven't taken that concept on the trail yet.

I've spent quite a lot of time searching for a pack that balanced size, comfort, and organization in a way that serves what I want. The Refugio 30L has been my unicorn. The harness system is excellent, the bag has just enough organization between its main compartments and the included laptop sleeve/caddy, and it can carry what I need without feeling "overstuffed."
