Main compartment is roomy enough for almost a week of clothes, and outer compartment is great for easy access to a puffy/shell/sunglasses etc. Stretchy water bottle pockets on each side were usable without taking the pack off. The compression straps pulled double duty to secure my water bottle and umbrella.Items inside did get damp during a rainy day walking around Boston, but I didn't expect otherwise.Highly recommend for the ultralight traveler or fair weather commuter!

Great Day Pack, Could Use Some Improvements

This feature is quite common on other backpacks so it's a shame that it isn't incorporated into the design. Would be great if there's a separate pouch or two in the middle compartment for smaller things that you might need to access on a daily basis.-Only One Zipper For The Laptop CompartmentJust put two so it's easier to open and close, I honestly don't understand why Patagonia thought it was smart to put only one there.-Phone Compartment? This might just be a personal complain, but I like to stash my phone in my backpack when I want to focus. My old backpack has a small ziplock pocket in the back of the pack where I can conveniently leave my phone there and just forget about it, so it would be nice to have something like this.Summary:If you're a college student like me, this is a great product for you.

Instead of a single 28L Refugio, we now get a 26L and 30L
14 August 2022

The new $119 30L Refugio replaces my former $99 30L Chacabuco in my travel rotation. Due to the switch to a removable, padded laptop sleeve (which I estimate to be worth from $40-$60 although it is not sold separately) I think the 30L Refugio is a great replacement. The built-in, non-removable padding in the laptop compartment of the Chacabuco permanently subtracts from available storage space, and of course fails to provide any protection for my laptop when removed through security. The included padded laptop sleeve in the new (this year 2022 or maybe last year) 30L Refugio DOES protect my laptop during security transits, and doesn't hog space when I don't need a laptop (especially if I want a water bladder instead).I use the following luggage pairings for ... MoreThe new $119 30L Refugio replaces my former $99 30L Chacabuco in my travel rotation. The included padded laptop sleeve in the new (this year 2022 or maybe last year) 30L Refugio DOES protect my laptop during security transits, and doesn't hog space when I don't need a laptop (especially if I want a water bladder instead).I use the following luggage pairings for international travel (20 hours, one transit hub):1. 30L Refugio overhead with laptop, 15L underseat daypack with tablet (the Arbor 15L has unfortunately been discontinued). Always keep an obvious size difference between overhead "luggage" and underseat "personal item", even if it means upsizing your overhead to the max to make a medium daypack as a personal item look legit - I got busted once for having two personal sized daypacks (I was expecting credit for keeping my overhead smaller but got an unexpected opposite reaction).2. Wheelie (or spinner) overhead, 26L Refugio underseat. 26L underseat is a lot of bag to stow underseat, and only necessary for me when departing with winter puff jacket and arriving in a tropical climate - underpacking the underseat bag pays off when I need to shed the excess insulation. Also useful to max out overhead (45L usually the max) and seatside (30L usually the max) if aiming for no checked luggage.3. Black Hole 40L duffel overhead (I like this size better than the 45L MLC, but mourn the loss of a laptop slot). The lack of a laptop slot overhead forces me to the 26L Refugio to get the benefits of that removable padded laptop sleeve. But then I get punished with no leg room, unless I can sneak my personal item overhead, stacking it on the Black Hole Duffel.Only $20 separates the 26L and 30L Refugios. You should inspect both in-store. Generally I find it's better to go larger and underpack, than go smaller and have to stuff to the gills. So I favor the 30L. But a lot of people just fill whatever space they have, and in that case 26L is much saner around town.

Light weight & Spacious
21 January 2023

I intentionally researched lightweight backpacks for work. Because of a hybrid work arrangement, I often have my laptop and files, so I need room. II really like the Refugio 30L. I looked at the smaller size but it was too small for my needs. The laptop pouch with pockets is nicely padded and the top latch keeps it securely in place. The material is durable. They have slightly redesigned it. I would suggest to the designers adding back the key ring holder. I also think there should be more zippered pockets inside (for wallets, other smaller items), so they are not rolling loose in the bottom of the bag (There is one smaller outer zippered pouch, but for security, an inside zippered pocket or two would be a nice addition. I like the material. Feels very nice. The zippers feel really nice too. They zip very smoothly. I wish the zipper on the top-most bag-part was a dual zipper, like the way the lower bag part is.My biggest issue is the lack of pockets. There is only one pocket and it is on the laptop bag. And I have to put only small items in it as to not have it press against my laptop lid. I would have liked it if there were some pen/flashlight/mouse pockets in the backpack. I had to get a separate baggie to hold my charging cables and such. The adjustable straps are nice. However, I don't use the front strap much, so I moved it to the back. I like how I was able to simply unclip it and then clip it onto the straps on the other side. One thing about the backpack part that holds the laptop holding bag is that I wish there was more zipper to zip down. The limited distance i can zip down prevents me from pulling the backpack too far open and seeing the contents of the mesh pocket of the laptop holder. I have to blindly shove my hand into the mesh pocket and rummage around for my pens. I wish I could see deeper into my bag, as that is the point of having a mesh pocket.I really like the deep water bottle pockets. Too often I have my water bottle fall out of my old backpack because the pocket was too shallow, but this holds it very nicely and securely. It has two pockets, so I use one for a water bottle and the other I use for holding my flashlight and whistle, and I use the strap to hang them on. But because it's open, I'm afraid it might fall out or get pickpocketed. Maybe if the water bottle holder had a zipper too that would be cool.Thank you very much. I like it.

Reply to reply to my review

This is a reply to Patagonia's response to my review of the 26L Refugio redesign--not clear how else to communicate/follow up. There I complained that 1) the new pack is no longer specifically designed for women/shorter torso-ed people; 2) they eliminated inside pockets. Their responses completely miss the point; it almost feels as if they are trying to obfuscate this change for the worse, hoping people won't notice. A pack that comfortably fits smaller people (call them what you want, 95% will be women) is about more than the pack itself being smaller, and the ability to shorten the straps. Of course the straps are adjustable; that is universally true of all backpacks. The beauty of the old 26L Refugio was how the straps were sewn at the top about an inch+ down ... MoreThis is a reply to Patagonia's response to my review of the 26L Refugio redesign--not clear how else to communicate/follow up. A pack that comfortably fits smaller people (call them what you want, 95% will be women) is about more than the pack itself being smaller, and the ability to shorten the straps. Of course the straps are adjustable; that is universally true of all backpacks. The beauty of the old 26L Refugio was how the straps were sewn at the top about an inch+ down from the top back of the pack on their own dedicated seam, so that the pack was magically lifted on the torso without sacrificing volume; someone had really thought through how to make it comfortable for this group of users. Now they've substituted the standard practice of sewing the straps into the top seam of the backpack itself--so that the seam does double duty, and the bag hangs lower. This generic/male/larger person default is the way the new Refugio is made (there's even a guy in the photo now!), which eliminates the previous women/small torso specifity of the pack. It was a unique and brilliant design, and they have made it like any other backpack on the market. As for the removable laptop sleeve, not all of us carry only laptops there. I often carry folders, papers, and notebooks in that sleeve instead, and I want those in a sleeve sewn into the pack that I can slip them in and out of easily, not something I have to grapple with removing. I can't overstate my disappointment. I have raved about the Women's (or small person) Refugio for years, and sent Patagonia a lot of business. Now it is like any other backpack, and worse in some ways. I will never buy another one, unless the old "women's" design is restored.

Revolutionary laptop protection and TSA transit
14 August 2022

Both the 2022 redesigned (maybe 2021?) 26L and new 30L Refugio daypacks ace the "must bring along laptop" and "must transit TSA and international security checkpoints with minimal hassle" checkboxes. To wit, the latest Refugios have removable padded inserts to hold and pad our laptops. The new removable laptop sleeve not only assists with security transits, it means easier and more complete recovery of storage space at destination. At home, ditch the sleeve to reclaim usable space when you don't need it, or to make room for a water bladder instead. (Note that there is a Velcro loop closure at top of slot, for holding a water bladder, that will also attach to the padded laptop sleeve for a little extra peace of mind against theft.)During security transits, the ... MoreBoth the 2022 redesigned (maybe 2021?) 26L and new 30L Refugio daypacks ace the "must bring along laptop" and "must transit TSA and international security checkpoints with minimal hassle" checkboxes. (Note that there is a Velcro loop closure at top of slot, for holding a water bladder, that will also attach to the padded laptop sleeve for a little extra peace of mind against theft.)During security transits, the padded sleeve protects the laptop and keeps potential thieves from accurately assessing the value of your laptop. You can detach the Velcro security loop, or wiggle the sleeve out and spread eagle daypack and sleeve on the conveyor belt.I wouldn't put anything except cables (without wall warts/power bricks) in the mesh accessory panel on the exterior of the laptop sleeve. Anything that protrudes will simply focus the force of an accidental drop onto a smaller area of the laptop lid or body and improve the odds of a cracked screen. (Same principle why corner drops are usually more damaging than flat drops.)I would like to see Patagonia include "security loops" where zipper pulls can be zip-tied to prevent pilfering. Where there are two zipper pulls on a compartment, of course usually they can be ziptied to each other. The only single pull, no anchor point, on the 26L Refugio is the otherwise very handy outermost stuff panel with a single vertical zipper. So tempting to stow your passport there, but don't do it.Tiny cable zip ties are the best; I travel with a small pouch of them and a nail clipper to cut them loose. In bulk, they are very inexpensive and its only on transits where I'm napping that I worry about security.

Worked for me
13 June 2023

Most of the mixed reviews are correct. It is a mix of good and awkward features but overall I liked it. I used it to go to a conference where I was taking my iPad out and cords etc so I really enjoyed the laptop sleeve and organizer. The small pocket in front was a bit of a mess but I didn’t mind it too much except when I worried I would drop something out since the zipper splits the picked down the middle vertically. The plus was it was pretty easy to access from one shoulder and I didn’t really mind the lack of organization. The big compartment held a lot of things and the straps balanced the weight well and was very comfortable. So I would say all the negative reviews did point out some of the downsides but I still liked the bag during my travels and will ... MoreMost of the mixed reviews are correct. Probably not for everyone especially if the negatives will drive you crazy. It worked well for my needs.
