Before you go out into the field, make sure your water bottles fit inside the mesh compartments

I'm impressed with this thoughtful pack in many ways, but in the end it has a major flaw that will have me returning it. The product description states that it has two mesh pockets to hold your favorite size water bottle. After receiving it--ordered online-- I tried inserting a standard 32 oz. Nalgene bottle. Not even close no matter how far I tried to stretch the mesh. Next, I tried a considerably smaller standard sized bicycle water bottle. Even that was to large to squeeze in. Either I received a product that was manufactured poorly/incorrectly or the product description misstates the size and use of the mesh pockets. I haven't seen a similar complaint in the reviews and I'm sure the intention for the mesh pockets is to secure water bottles, so I likely was sent ... MoreI'm impressed with this thoughtful pack in many ways, but in the end it has a major flaw that will have me returning it. Without being able to store bottles it's worthless to me. I will bring both bottles to the store when trying to exchange/return. I've been a heavy consumer of Patagonia for more decades than I would like to share. I have noticed a continual slide in quality over at least the last five years. Switched all of my gear, and it's considerable, over to Arcteryx,...except for Black Hole bags. Looks like thats next. Patagonia, if you are manufacturing for the extremes of dog walking and fraternity bro's trying to look like adventurers so be it...but for people who actually need to rely on their gear, a smaller less lucrative market to be sure, please bring your once famous and deserved quality back. This small little product-problem is indicative of a much larger one. Thank you.

I don’t mess around with Patagonia because although you may not be buying the most designer brand. You are purchasing a lifelong product. Their warranty is lifetime. If anything goes wrong, they will take care of it. You can’t beat that! This pack is the perfect size to fit a notebook, a novel, first aid kit, water bottles, what else do you need. Keep inside the car, to travel, or carry with you every day.

Nice large waist pack with two very forgiving water bottle holders. Same great super tough, water resistant, Black Hole polyester as the larger bags.I did have one that had a buckle break while on vacation, thankfully I was able to stop into the Palo Alto store and do a very fast and easy exchange, though I wish Patagonia kept spare buckles in store as an in-house repairable item rather than needing to be mailed off.On mine, a 'wing' on the male buckle connector broke off. With the very forgiving waist band (these waist bands are EXTRA long folks), it would have been an easy cut, and re-sew of a new male sided buckle. Dropping it off for a day or two would have been fine, but mailing it in and not having it for the the rest of my trip wasn't a great option.

Comfortable and well made
27 August 2023

The bag and and straps are high quality. I was expecting that from Patagonia. What was surprising is how large the water bottle sleeves were. I have shorter, wider water bottles due to my mountain bike frame and the sleeves stretched to accommodate them. The bag interior has a mesh pocket that works great for my phone and wallet. A small feature that makes all the difference is the strap loop that keeps the excess strap under control. I’ve been out for three rides so far with this bag and I’ll never go back to a backpack. This waist pack is very comfortable and lets my back breathe.

Excellent but Flawed

This is hip pack is an excellent man purse. I have been loving it but, there is a big problem. The front little pocket has a key chain ribbon that gets caught in the zipper and causes severe jams that literally take 10 minutes to get undone. After reading other reviews I now know that the solution is to cut out the ribbon on day one before it has time to damage your zipper. Now that I have realized this I am cutting mine out but I have a conundrum; do I first exchange it for a new one so I can start with a fresh zipper that has not already been through a few severe jams? That feels wasteful. I suppose I could just trust that Patagonia will repair or replace it if the zipper eventually fails.

Great little bag.

I use this primarily for riding my dirtbike. I do 1-3 hour stints and carry about a liter of spare fuel, a liter of water (in a soft bladder), my phone, a snack, a small groover kit incase nature calls while on the trail- as well as a small (very minimal) first aid kit.The bag is very comfortable and stays put while riding. I really don’t notice it’s there anymore. Coming from a small pack this is a great upgrade for mobility. Even in fast whoop sections I am tuned into what’s ahead- not what’s on my back. This bag is small so intend for that when purchasing- I have a little room left and will put together a very small tool kit to fill in the nooks and crannies. The outside water bottle sleeves are small and though they fit a half liter sized Nalgene bottle- My ... MoreI use this primarily for riding my dirtbike. Even boony scraping while hiking I would be concerned of having the bottle get lost. These need webbing to tie in the bottles. (The reason for not 5 stars)My wife and I go backpacking in the summers here in the Tahoe area and intend to have this as an add on bag to use for day hikes when leaving our base camps. Though I haven’t used it for this use yet I’m sure it will perform swimmingly.I think the coolest part of this bag is that the Black Hole Series bags are made of recycled plastic bottles. What a great idea. So while you are passing the gapers along the way you know you’re doing your part in collecting their mess!

Great product

I've been on the hunt for the right hip pack for hiking and mountain biking, and there are some great ones on the market. Patagonia found the right balance of features, simplicity, and style. Some features I appreciate: the structured back pad, the strap keepers, solid materials, and interesting color combo. Altogether, it is a highly functional hip pack that isn't so big it's floppy but can fit what you need for an afternoon hike or ride. The one thing that irks me is that they put that weird loop on the top. It is pretty much unfunctional for anything but hanging the bag on a peg in the store and as a pop of color. Without a functional handle, the hip bag is just a little less easy to handle when not being worn. It's a great handleminimalistic but substantial. I use a cube as a dopp kit. I can just hold the whole thing in my hand but I actually use the handle because it's great. If they fixed the handle issue, this pack would be a timeless victory that should stay in Patagonia's lineup for a long time.*one could make a claim that the straps are a little long, but the strap keepers help with that.**I could also imagine a pocket on the hip that is accessible while wearing that fits a phone or some food. But that comes at the cost of the appreciated simplicity.

I believe, from reading all the previous reviews, that the Patagonia design team and its product testing team are only the customer reviewers. This product should never have been produced or sold with the obvious design flaws and without asingle Patagonia employee trying one out. You could probably give them out free in exchange for the PATAGONIA marketing sign on the e back but I wouldnt take one still.I used to buy this Patagonia products because of the solid design and dependability in remarkably tough conditions. Now, it seems, you buy to brag about your high dollar purchase. Yvon must be sick.E

Rugged and well designed
20 January 2023

I got this pack to replace my older Patagonia pack of many years. I needed something a little bigger and I like the BlackHole series of bags. The two travel bags and couple smaller organizer bags from this same series have served me well. The pack has two bottle pockets with stretch fabric, allowing them to be good for smaller items as well. The large compartment has a mesh divider. Older reviews fussed about the key hook in the front compartment, but I have had no issues. The belt adjustment is at the pack, not the buckle, making less bulk up front.Im loving my pack.

Sewing Pattern Needs Work
21 November 2022

I bought this item in July 2022 for my cross-country cycling trips. Pros: quality materials. Cons: too small, poor design.Pack says 5L capacity, but it hardly fits a half gallon of milk. The pattern/design is too oblong, so pack bounces too much when full. In my opinion a semi-circle type shape would be ideal for a bag this size. One much needed alteration: compartments. I took the bag to my tailor and had a zipper installed on inside mesh pouch in order to contain extra small items (ie. Allen wrench, CO2 cartridge, tire levers, pen, etc.)
