Faulty GPS!!!

Most often, GPS tracks closely to the actual waypoints during first half of my hike, but jumps ALL OVER the map on the way back. This has consistently occurred even on out-and-back hikes, so existence of canopy, signal disruption, etc. should not apply. Fenix 5S has consistently overstated the mileage on all affected tracks, and for my purposes, this renders the unit useless. I'll be returning it.I tried to upload screenshot of my GPS track so people could actually see what I'm talking about, but REI's review function doesn't seem to let me upload the pic.

I bought this watch hoping it would be the end all solution to my pacing problems. I was excited about the other features (swimming, cycling, strava sync, even sleep feature).Right away I experienced major GPS discrepancies in both distance and pace. I know because I ran my iPhone simultaneously with Strava. I contacted Garmin and they gave me some GPS setting tips that seemed to help a little bit, but not enough to justify use of the device. It generally would add .10mile onto every successive mile run, through erratic GPS tracking (sometimes made it seem like I was running through buildings and across rivers etc). My run pace is around 9mins and it seemed to report I was running 12 min miles against 6:30 miles. The worst was in a race, where I was relying on the pace feature to keep steady and ended up finishing slower than the target I'd set (my watch telling me I had finished the race more than 1 mile before hand). Swimming laps was faulty, even though I use a 50m pool.I live in NYC, so maybe the buildings played a part, but my runs were in Central park, Roosevelt island and queens mostly. All of them were faulty.Utilizing the sleep feature was cool, but I found wearing the watch all the time caused my skin to rip/blister in spots. Also, another consideration, the size. The small size is great, but I don't know if the larger size would have bothered me in hindsight. I really wanted this watch to solve my pacing probs. I might look to get a simpler device. For now, I run with headphones and my iphone using strava (which has an announcement feature that audibly interrupts music to tell you your total time, last mile/km time). That's good enough. I have an iphone 5SE, so it's size is nominal.

Another thing that I would describe as a definite plus is the LOOK of the watch it's is very clean especially with a simple analog watch face loaded it doesn't scream smartwatch or fitness tracker at all. Even though it has all the functionality you could want out of both. The 5S is a very good size too for someone like me who is on the small side and women who are worried about having this huge thing strapped to your wrist. It really just looks like a regular watch and would fit well on anyone. Thank you for reading my review! 5/5

Great Fitness Tracker
4 April 2018

I love this watch! Everything about it is customizable, from the watch face, to the widgets, to the apps on it. I use it primarily for tracking cycling performance, but I've used it for everything from brisk walks to CrossFit (with an app downloaded from Garmin's store). My only complaint is that VO2 and some of the more intricate fitness measurements are geared for running, or if you want to spend and additional $800 you could use cycling. I have a bad leg and avoid running so I feel gyped out of about 1/3 of the useful measurements. Another thing worth mentioning is that when I say Great Fitness Tracker, I mean after you spend an additional amount on an ANT+ chest strap. The optical heart rate on the watch itself really only works when you're still. Also, while I ... MoreI love this watch! Great all-around watch

This is my second Garmin product and my first Fenix, after my Vivoactive 4S was smashed in a bike accident.First off, the battery life is astonishing. I have the 5, NOT the 5S, and I regularly get 12 days out of the battery; I believe the 5S is slightly shorter, about 9 days.Secondly, the sapphire glass is indestructible. Don't bother with a screen protector unless you're regularly and unavoidably hitting things with it, because the sapphire crystal can take anything you throw at it. The entire watch is built like a tank, and I have absolutely no concerns about damaging it, but it still manages to look stylish, much more so than an Apple watch or Fitbit.Thirdly, the bevy of sensors provides more than enough information for all but the most hardcore of ... MoreThis is my second Garmin product and my first Fenix, after my Vivoactive 4S was smashed in a bike accident.First off, the battery life is astonishing. Is it necessarily the best watch for, say, marathon training? Maybe not. But it's the best all-around watch for anything outdoors, and it doesn't sacrifice much for that versatility. I wear it running, hiking, mountain biking, and swimming, and it performs quite well at all three levels. Two caveats. One - it does NOT have Garmin Pay. While not a deal-breaker, this was rather disappointing to me. After all, my $300 Vivoactive had it, why doesn't my $600 Fenix? Two, it does NOT have music. This is less of a problem, as I usually simply used my phone, but it could be annoying to some people. For both of these features, you'll need to move up to the Fenix 5 Plus or the Fenix 6.All things considered, it's a great watch, with only a couple of things missing to make it a truly fantastic one, and these things really aren't worth shelling out an extra $100+ for.

Great smartwatch for almost everything
14 September 2021

I love this smartwatch. I never take it off unless I have to and it has helped me with just about any sport and also health metric I want to track. About the only thing I would change about the purchase is I wish I'd have bought the one with good for diving since I am taking that sport up again but all else is just great. I splurged on the better crystal since I am hard on watches and true to form three years later there isn't a scratch on it.

I adore this watch

Most smart watches are absolutely huge and ugly. This one is small and looks sharp. Despite being small, I find the battery life to be outstanding - at least 2 days, with multiple activities per day. The best part is that it interfaces with the Garmin Varia bike radar. When I am riding, the watch buzzes and beeps when a car is approaching from behind, so I know when to glance down at the radar display. That way I can keep my eyes on the road. The buzz is strong enough that I can feel it even with winter riding gear on. The sapphire crystal is great - I have really whacked this watch a few times, and not even a scratch. Ok, so the heart monitor isn’t so accurate (it drops out completely sometimes), and the altimeter doesn’t really get when I climb stairs, but those are common complaints for all brands of smart watches. I do pair an ANT+ heart rate strap with it for workouts (I use an optical strap on my upper arm from Scoche, and it works well with the watch). Finally, it pairs easily with my phone, and Garmin updates the watch’s software often, so bugs get fixed pretty quickly. Just make sure that if you use other Garmin products, that you keep them all up to date or they may stop talking to each other.

So pretty for a GPS watch

As a avid runner I've have my fair share of running watches from TomToms to Garmin's. I have always been very happy with Garmin and their excellent customer service, but I have always found that the more serious running watches are mainly aimed at men and having small wrists they can look silly on. When I was looking to up grade my FR230 I came across the Fenix 5s, it covers every sport imaginable and I especially like the fact it is seriously waterproof as I am looking to take triathlons as a new challenge. After seeing the 5s in rose gold and white my mind was decided.I am so pleased with this watch, its is above and beyond what I hoped it would be and for once it looks nice on (I know that's a girl thing to say, but it matters) I've found I now wear this as my ... MoreAs a avid runner I've have my fair share of running watches from TomToms to Garmin's. The HR monitor is accurate and the battery lasts well even with wifi, Bluetooth and HR monitor permanently on. Yes it's expensive, but you pay for what you get!

The watch is great but I cant leave a good review because of swimoutlet. The shipping was free but slow. It took almost a week to get here and the shipping service rerouted back to the origin once. But what is terrible is this watch was clearly not in New condition. The watch itself seems ok but the box seal was broken and the tape seal was no longer even sticky. The watch had clearly been worn and two hairs were caught under the watch bezel. The owners manual also had been used and pages were creased back. I bought the watch when all Garmin watches were $150 off. I cant replace it for the same price so Im begrudgingly keeping it. But it shouldnt have been sold as a new unit. Im super disappointed and wont ever buy from this site again.

does not last long
14 October 2022

being a flag ship model with $800 price tag i expect it to last long but after 4 year use, it finally died. It does not turn on or charge. Garmin Support just asked me to pay 179$ to get a replacement watch which is refurbished unit with 90 day warranty. I know 4-5 years is long time but these watches are supposed to be built to last longer than that.
