I got this watch after doing lots of research and comparing multiple watches. I read lots of articles about the "Fenix 5 series" which I thought referred to the Fenix 5s but I was wrong. Sadly this watch doesn't have the map features you may have read about. The watch does allow you to upload courses to follow but it doesn't show you on a map. There are a few drawbacks to this. The first is that you have to know the course you before actually traveling it. Leaving you at the mercy of other hikers courses. Even though I was previously using courses marked by other hikers I was always using a topo map with the course laid on top. This would allow me to use the other hikers' courses as a guide and utilize some of my own navigational skills if there were obstacles like down trees, snow cornices, or flooding to safely navigate. Which brings me to the second major drawback of having no idea where you are in relation to things. I wanted the map features to know if I was near a source of water or approaching a steep incline, or cliff band. It is nice that the watch allows you to at least upload courses but the amount of information it offers and the size of the display make it almost pointless. Personally I was looking for a watch to help track my training and enhance my navigating on adventures so I didn't have to rely on my phone. However, at this price and the features offered my phone is more useful and Sadly, I'll be returning the watch to get a cheaper tracker and a true GPS system for navigating.

Most often, GPS tracks closely to the actual waypoints during first half of my hike, but jumps ALL OVER the map on the way back. This has consistently occurred even on out-and-back hikes, so existence of canopy, signal disruption, etc. should not apply. Fenix 5S has consistently overstated the mileage on all affected tracks, and for my purposes, this renders the unit useless. I'll be returning it.I tried to upload screenshot of my GPS track so people could actually see what I'm talking about, but REI's review function doesn't seem to let me upload the pic.

I bought this watch hoping it would be the end all solution to my pacing problems. I was excited about the other features (swimming, cycling, strava sync, even sleep feature).Right away I experienced major GPS discrepancies in both distance and pace. I know because I ran my iPhone simultaneously with Strava. I contacted Garmin and they gave me some GPS setting tips that seemed to help a little bit, but not enough to justify use of the device. It generally would add .10mile onto every successive mile run, through erratic GPS tracking (sometimes made it seem like I was running through buildings and across rivers etc). My run pace is around 9mins and it seemed to report I was running 12 min miles against 6:30 miles. The worst was in a race, where I was relying on the pace feature to keep steady and ended up finishing slower than the target I'd set (my watch telling me I had finished the race more than 1 mile before hand). Swimming laps was faulty, even though I use a 50m pool.I live in NYC, so maybe the buildings played a part, but my runs were in Central park, Roosevelt island and queens mostly. All of them were faulty.Utilizing the sleep feature was cool, but I found wearing the watch all the time caused my skin to rip/blister in spots. Also, another consideration, the size. The small size is great, but I don't know if the larger size would have bothered me in hindsight. I really wanted this watch to solve my pacing probs. I might look to get a simpler device. For now, I run with headphones and my iphone using strava (which has an announcement feature that audibly interrupts music to tell you your total time, last mile/km time). That's good enough. I have an iphone 5SE, so it's size is nominal.

Good looking watch, Bluetooth is terrible
8 November 2017

I got this watch in late May, so it's been about 6 months since my purchase. I love the aesthetics of the watch. I got the white on white and it looks great on my wrist. It's not too big, and the band material is quite comfortable. I use it daily and only take it off to charge or when I'm doing something that may stain it.As a tracker, it's not very good. The sleep tracking is completely off, it shows me sleeping when I'm up and about. During the summer I took long walks everyday and it would still buzz for me to "move" even though I was being active. The bluetooth is the worst thing ever. I thought it was my phone that was broken but I got a new phone last week and it still does the same thing. The bluetooth is the worst thing ever. I thought it was my phone that was broken but I got a new phone last week and it still does the same thing. My watch will literally be inches away from my phone and it'll disconnect and connect the bluetooth about 5 times in the span of half an hour. I don't really need a smartwatch but I do keep my phone on silent and rely on the phone notifications for phone calls and texts on my watch so I miss about half of them since it's constantly disconnecting. The last con is that it only has so much space for tracking activities so you have to hook it up to the computer and delete files to clear up the memory before it'll save new data-and you can only do this through the computer, so it's kind of annoying. Now for the pros. I use this watch primarily to track running, indoor cycling, and hiking. The GPS is extremely accurate. The stats that the watch offers as well as those on the app are amazing and have really helped me improve in all these activities. I also appreciate that the battery is very good and can last me a weeks charge when I don't use GPS.

Good, smaller alternative w/ all the features you need (and more)
4 September 2020

A replacement for the much larger/bulky Fenix 5 with the same and more features. Still a bit of a high profile for a petite wrist, but I knew what I wanted in features and sticking with a Garmin. So far the refurbished is doing OK (only questionable wrist gesture light issue). Tracks all activities well (including open water sea swimming, cardio/aerobic) and sleep. Many other features to be discovered. I wasn't sure I could actually sleep with it on (and I wanted rest tracking) but it's actually tolerable. The battery life could be better - I charge about every other day -and use GPS tracking daily for some sport. I opted for the sapphire because I knew I would regret it (get scratches) for sure if not - worth the extra $$. I recommend (and will have to do more) ... MoreA replacement for the much larger/bulky Fenix 5 with the same and more features. Great all-around watch
4 October 2020

This is my second Garmin product and my first Fenix, after my Vivoactive 4S was smashed in a bike accident.First off, the battery life is astonishing. I have the 5, NOT the 5S, and I regularly get 12 days out of the battery; I believe the 5S is slightly shorter, about 9 days.Secondly, the sapphire glass is indestructible. Don't bother with a screen protector unless you're regularly and unavoidably hitting things with it, because the sapphire crystal can take anything you throw at it. The entire watch is built like a tank, and I have absolutely no concerns about damaging it, but it still manages to look stylish, much more so than an Apple watch or Fitbit.Thirdly, the bevy of sensors provides more than enough information for all but the most hardcore of ... MoreThis is my second Garmin product and my first Fenix, after my Vivoactive 4S was smashed in a bike accident.First off, the battery life is astonishing. Is it necessarily the best watch for, say, marathon training? Maybe not. But it's the best all-around watch for anything outdoors, and it doesn't sacrifice much for that versatility. I wear it running, hiking, mountain biking, and swimming, and it performs quite well at all three levels. Two caveats. One - it does NOT have Garmin Pay. While not a deal-breaker, this was rather disappointing to me. After all, my $300 Vivoactive had it, why doesn't my $600 Fenix? Two, it does NOT have music. This is less of a problem, as I usually simply used my phone, but it could be annoying to some people. For both of these features, you'll need to move up to the Fenix 5 Plus or the Fenix 6.All things considered, it's a great watch, with only a couple of things missing to make it a truly fantastic one, and these things really aren't worth shelling out an extra $100+ for.

Great features and fits smaller wrist

I usually have good luck with Garmin, and this is no exception. Have had this less than a month and am quite happy with the performance. I love that you can customize with numerous watch faces, It takes a while to get all the settings organized, but i like the display options for running and biking, and I finally can track my swims (using the optional HR-TRI). I have a very small frame for a guy, and any other watch looks ridiculously big on me. The Fenix 5S looks normal, and fits well under my dress shirts for all day wear. The optional suede band looks good if you want to dress it up a little also. Overall a really good watch - pricey, but seems to be worth it.

After adjusting to the watch, operations and all its functions, I can honestly say it never comes off my wrist. The silicone band is comfortable for long days and the 42mm bezel is a great fit for my wrist. I am tracking (on average) 12 hours of activities per week without having to charge the watch. I do use a chest strap HRM during ‘intense’ cardio sessions or races but the wrist based HR has been updated since the fenix 3 and is much more accurate. Charging is fast and syncing via Bluetooth is effortless.Editing daily activities is easy via the smartphone app or computer. The amount of data stored is quite remarkable for such a small device. Tracking my stats has become more of a game than exercise. Just a great watch packed with so many features.

The créme de la créme of GPS watches

I wanted to wait until I had used the Fenix for a few weeks before reviewing it. My primary intention was to use this for running and I did plenty of research before choosing this model. It’s easier to use than I thought it would be, thankfully. The features I love most are the visible map, the speed workout guidance and the notifications that sync with my phone. I didn’t quite understand when I bought this that I would still need my phone with me but since I decided against the Garmin 645 music trusting its reviews, I need my phone for music anyways. I’m hopeful that Garmin will merge with a music app soon but you can control the music on your phone from the watch without an app for it.I still use an app on my phone to track my running and find that the watch ... MoreI wanted to wait until I had used the Fenix for a few weeks before reviewing it. By the time my run is finished it all calculates accurately though. So far I have used it for running, hiking and timed exercise activities but have yet to take it in the pool for laps.I’m sure many features remain for me to discover and use, but so far I am completely satisfied with the Fenix 5S!

I bought this watch 3 weeks ago and have been wearing pretty continuously since. I bought it as an upgrade/replacement to the suunto ambit3 peak. I am using it for strength training/ climbing/ mtb hiking/ hiking and in the winter, will use for skiing/nackcountry.Appearance/fit: I am a woman and think the fit of the 5s is very good. Not too big or bulky on my wrist. In white, I think actually a flattering watch.HR monitor: The accuracy of the optical HR monitor is not as good as a HR band, in particular for rapid changes in HR such as interval training/ HIT workouts or activities when your arm is vibrating ie biking. I knew this in advance of buying the watch (see many reviews on internet comparing accuracy), and planned to use a garmin HR band with it for real ... MoreI bought this watch 3 weeks ago and have been wearing pretty continuously since. I knew this in advance of buying the watch (see many reviews on internet comparing accuracy), and planned to use a garmin HR band with it for real workouts. I did try the watch alone for a few gym workouts involving HIT and also biking. It was not good enough, the HRs were much too low for HIT/ fast rises in HR while biking. I am thus using with garmin HR band and am very happy with the accuracy. The watch pairs to the band automatically once you put the band on for workout. For daily activity tracking, low intensity/steady state activities such as running, watch is very good alone.Features: So far the watch does everything I want it to. Step tracking, stairs, a move sensor during the day. Can customize the watch screen for each activity. The pre programmed activities are not as extensive as Suunto (which included backcountry skiing etc), but I am sure I will be able to duplicate similar screens. It has also has a nice all day stress app, which essentially is monitoring heart rate variability over course of day. I think it is accurate, given that stress climbs throughout work week and fall over weekend...Sleep tracking tracks deep sleep/ REM etc and seems to be accurate, given that sleep cycles line up in same timing every night! Watch also measures vo2 max (which is quite accurate when tested against gold standards), training load, aerobic/anerobic training load etc etcGPS- connects within 20s. Works well as tested in mountains...App- Phone app is excellent and connects immediately with phone.Battery life- 3-4 days, with watch constantly on and using for 2-3 hrs of various activities per day.Cost- very expensive.Summary- Excellent watch for intended uses: training, mountains and general wellness tracking. Though pricey, it was worth to me.
