An excellent lens for image quality.The deal-breaker for me was the quite audible focus motor. Quiet enough for landscapes and outdoor use, but I work in extremely restrictive environments where TOTAL SILENCE is absolutely necessary and maintained, where even very quiet noises such those as the Touit focusing motor produces can be heard as clearly as a gunshot. For this reason I returned the lens. Bummer, because it is otherwise a terrific piece of kit!

I am a long time Zeiss enthusiast and professional user. The entire touit series does not live up the the historical standard set by Zeiss. My 12mm 2.8 e mount Zeiss lens seized its aperture after less than a year of use. When I sent it in the repair service providers falsely claim it’s an impact damage and wouldn’t repair it under warranty. It costs half the price of a new lens to get repaired. I find this unacceptable and will not be paying for the repair. The modern lenses Zeiss is putting out are not of the quality they once were. If minor use is going to put a lens like this into the repair shop I will no longer be a customer of their new products

The Zeiss Touit 12MM is an excellent wide angle lens for still photography but it is not meant to be used for video......it can be used for video but the autofocus is noise prone and it will hunt using certain focus modes. I use the Sony A6500 camera and I have this lens and the 55MM 1.8 along with the Sigma 18-35 and a couple of Minolta legacy lenses. The Touit 12 is a recent purchase and it meets my needs for a wide angle lens. I love using it for car shows, inside home shots and areas that need the coverage such as wanting to show attendance at political rallies or sports arenas. It is the widest coverage NON Fish eye lens I have seen so far and it has that legacy Zeiss 3/D image quality. After this last week, I have found that this lens meets the Zeiss image quality bar and then some. Sharp as a tack and when set up properly for video, a very good video lens for situations that require wide and I mean wide angle coverage. I just has a learning curve and most people who sell it after a while just did not spend enough time using it.

Typically, people buy these types of lenses for specific purposes -- typically for real estate or architectural photography, or for wide angle landscapes. In my case, I was looking for a lens for use in my underwater photography (I have a professional grade scuba housing for my Sony NEX camera). I tested the lens extensively, and really enjoyed the images, but in the end, I decided to return the lens. For landscapes or architectural shots, where you can intervene and focus manually when needed, this is a great lens. For the right purposes, this is a nice tool -- just not for the purposes I need it. On balance, I would give this a tightly qualified positive recommendation.
Got this back when they had the two-fer deal going and figured it would solve my wide angle needs. It gives expected results 3/4 of the time. For some reason, certain subjects and shapes seem a bit soft and have me questioning the lens but then it gives a series of great results. I use it less than expected so perhaps I need to exercise it more and get to learn its strengths? Most reviews are quite positive so it's likely related to some of things I've used it for. Made well without being too bulky or heavy and the hood is quite functional.

Wanted to love this lens as the focal length is useful for my landscape and architectural photography, and also because of my trust in the Zeiss brand. But after many simple home focus tests at various scenes and apertures, this lens was soft throughout and couldn't even compete in IQ when compared with Fuji's 16mm/2.8 at equivalent crop sizes. It's going back to B&H for a refund. I'll likely look at Fuji's 10-24 zoom as a more appropriate option.

I needed a wide angel lens for certain shots that the Sigma could not do even at 18MM as the crop factor makes it into 27MM. With the crop factor of 1.5, the Zeiss 12mm goes from 12MM to 18MM which is wide enough for all my wide shots. Very little distortion as compared to other lenses that are in the range of this lens with very little CA that can be fixed in post production. Image quality is outstanding with that Zeiss 3D type pop, Color is also up to the Zeiss standard which is awesome. Update 9/10/17.......I recently sent in my 12MM 2.8 Touit to Zeiss to have the firmware updated. The newest firmware is version 2. My lens had version 1. I recently got it back and I can report that this lens is now excellent lens for video. It does not hunt like it did before and it has quieted down quite a bit. Zeiss does not charge to do the update as you must send your lens to them to have it done. This lens is now a fantastic lens that is perfect for not only stills but also video if you are in need of wide angle shots.
I've owned numerous Zeiss lenses over the years and they have always been stellar. I might have given this 4.5 because the aperture ring isn't stiff enough and will sometimes move but it's optically fabulous. At normal working distances it's very good/excellent right to the corners from f4.0-11.0. Center is razor sharp throughout. Unless you're doing big enlargements (which I do) it's good wide open too. I shoot full time for my living so my gear is important. Not sure how it would be wide open in the corners for something like astrophotography. I don't use it for that.It's beautiful aesthetically, especially with the matched hood. Additionally I had to give it back a half star for it's performance shooting infrared.
