Zeiss Otus 28mm f/1.4 ZE Lens For Canon EF Mount

I've been using this lens for nighttime landscape photography for a few weeks now, and the image quality is superb. The lens is sharp all the way into the corners, even wide open. Important for starry skies, coma is is minimal, provided the lens has been focused accurately. There is very little lens flare; point light sources such as street lamps in night scenes rarely create ghost images. On the negative side, this lens is large enough to attract unwanted attention when you take it out, and it is very heavy.

I am using this primarily for landscape and full body portraits and the lens has consistently excellent output provided you can nail focus, even on a 50-megapixel Canon 5Ds R. At f/1.4, it is visibly sharper than the recently released 35L II, and significantly sharper than the 24L II. By f/2.8 it is sharp across the entire frame of the 5Ds R, which few other lenses can match. The lens also has virtually zero lateral CA wide open, though there is a bit of LoCA in out of focus areas. The manual focusing ring is very smooth and pleasant to use, as with all the other Otus lenses. Bokeh rendering is nice and pleasant, though the ability to splice a picture up into planes present in the other Otuses is much less visible due to the focal length. The only downsides to this lens are the price, weight and the tendency to flare somewhat when the sun is just outside the frame in particular locations.

This is a beautiful lens. I also have the Milvus 25mm f/1.4 ZE. The 25mm is lighter, and probably a little sharper on the edge, but the Otus 28mm delivers much more inspiring color, like the Otus 50mm f/1.4.It feels harder to focus than the 25mm, probably due to its weight and size.
