Absolutely amazed at the clarity and low light !!!

Absolutely amazed at the clarity and low light performance even at max 60X !!! I bought this to replace an aging spotting scope I had for 20 years. My focus was Elk Hunting (definite low light) and range use. I received the Diamondback HD scope today. The quality, construction, and workmanship is superb. The design is well thought out and engineered. Now for the initial test, glass , and performance. This was a low light afternoon, thunderstorms and rain (crummy conditions to test any scope). I used a mountain saddle 4 miles away for a testing gauge. I started low and worked from 20 to 60X stopping to check clarity, operation, and light gathering. All the way from 20-60 crystal clear, no chromic or other abortions, and no fringe distortion!! Amazing.!! Tested at 3 and 1 mile as well. Even better results. I would definitely see deer or elk. I have not had the Diamondback at the range yet (another write up to follow), but based on the initial performance I'm sure scope will work well at 100 or 1000 yds plus. I shoot PRS out past 1000 yds (wanted optics to support). Features: Besides great engineering, the design, removable eye piece, rubber scope caps, extendable eye piece and sun shade, and neoprene cover (all included), make this the "Bange for your Buck" and top performer!!! I have diamond back binoculars as well (awesome). Vortex is "spot on" w/ price, value, construction, and performance. Great job Vortex!!!

This spotting scope and tripod are great. I have never owned a spotting scope until this one. The glass is clear in all the lights. The sun shade is really helpful as well. The scope looks and feels tough and durable but not overweight and not bulky. The tripod is super smooth to use. The legs fold down easily and lock in place pretty solid. They extend easily as well with a twist or two. It’s all packs well in my bag but my day pack is a little short for it to sit inside. Setting up is pretty quick and quiet. This is a great purchase in my opinion.

The scope does produce very good images, but not at high magnification.Cons: I agree with another reviewer who stated this should not be a 60X scope- it is only sharp at long distances up to about 40X. Much to my surprise, it was not the upgrade to my old Nikon scope that I had hoped it would be.

It's Just Okay

Let me start by saying that this Diamondback is my first scope. I have nothing to compare it to as far as scopes go, but as a photographer for over 40 years, I am well familiar with optics and lenses. Maybe that is my problem. I am trying to compare this scope with Canon L and Leica glass, which I realize is unfair considering the price point differences. It is just so hard not to subconsciously look through this scope without that frame of reference in the back of my mind. My biggest problem is with the amount of chromatic aberration I experienced. It was quite pronounced, especially in bright sunlight. Sharpness was acceptable at lower magnifications, but it got pretty fuzzy at the upper limits. It was quite pronounced, especially in bright sunlight. Sharpness was acceptable at lower magnifications, but it got pretty fuzzy at the upper limits. Both conditions would have been unacceptable on a camera lens I might use, but again, I am comparing a $500 scope with a $2000 lens. Perhaps, I should have moved up to the Viper or Razor line, but I tend to think that optical improvements would have been nominal. The new coatings on the Viper and Razor may have eliminated some of the CA, but not all. Improved sharpness would probably have been slight as well. Overall, the Diamondback has a great build quality, and for my purposes is probably all I need, but for those using a scope for more critical work such as birding, this may not do it for you.

It’ll do the job
6 November 2021

Bought about 1month ago. Have used it at the range. Works really good to see bullet holes in target out to 300 yards. Carried it to Colorado on a Mule Deer hunt. Was very good at ranges out to 2 miles for glassing. Magnification changes did require slight refocus from 20 power to 60 power. Make sure to use a sturdy tripod for 60 power viewing. Included cover was nice but gets in the way of the focus ring. It’ll do the job nicely at a really fair price

New Vortex Diamondback HD Spotting Scope

I purchased another name brand spotter and just wasn’t satisfied with the clarity at higher powers. Checked out the Diamondback HD 20-60x85 at a store. Salesman and I took it outside to check it out. The eyepiece and eye relief were definitely better than the brand I had purchased the week before. Clarity of view at all power settings was a lot better with the Vortex. Surprisingly good for a spotter in its price range. I took the other brand I had purchased the week prior and bought the Vortex Diamondback HD 20-60x85 angled. Love it.I highly recommend it. You won’t be disappointed!

Nice but...

Like other reviews I have the purple edging on some images, trees for example. The eye piece comes detached and takes some finesse to get properly installed. Be careful and read the instructions. Comes with a neoprene wrap. Price was good but still for the money there shouldn't be the purple edges.

Phenomenal scope for the price
21 September 2021

Didn't do as much glassing as I thought I would on my trip, but what I did do, I was really impressed with. The clarity is incredible, the view in low light is extremely great, and it's super easy to use. Definitely heavy but hey, its an 85mm, it's tough to make them light. My only complaint was the neoprene soft case to put over the scope had a horrible odor that I wasn't able to get out before my trip. I'll be trying to hand wash it before using it again. Definitely recommend. I haven't used any high end spotting scopes so I may not know what I'm missing out on, but I would guess that you can't beat this for the price. I can't imagine the view being much better at the cost of an extra thousand or couple thousand dollars.

Quality optics for a great price!
22 October 2022

As an avid birder I was long overdue for an upgrade on my spotting scope. I was using a 15+ year old scope and when I first received the Vortex scope I couldn’t believe the clarity of the viewing. I was able to identify many distant birds with this scope that I would have never had the chance with my outdated scope. Quality optics for a great price!

So, I was hoping to get a scope to hold me over until I was able to purchase something along the lines of a Kowa or Swarovski and chose this one. I hated it. I am naturally a more picky person as I like to be able to see my birds but the chromatic aberration is so bad at max magnification I had a hard time identifying Bonaparte's gulls. I imagine if you don't push the limits of what the scope can do it should be just fine, but I needed it to be able to get that extra range. That was what I bought it for in the first place. Make sure it actually fits your needs before you pull the trigger, otherwise you will end up like me, $300 down after punting and selling it back.I have my 10-year old pair of binoculars that I bought for $200 and I never need another pair.
