A Decent Do-all Pack

This bag checked more boxes than others on features I like for a do all pack. The laptop compartment is great and decently padded. It has a semi ridged frame that I think should help as well and helps the bag keep it's shape when storing or setting it down. It has its own zipper and compartment for the laptop which I love.Jacket and blanket straps are a must for me when camping or hiking and these are great with built in strap management. It's kind of annoying that there's no slack management on the rest of the adjustable straps. Straps are hanging all over the place. The waist strap is kind of an after thought, but it's there and functional which I like because mine is usually not in use. They just don't have any way to stow it built in.The bottle pockets ... MoreThis bag checked more boxes than others on features I like for a do all pack. The laptop compartment is great and decently padded. I love the rubber material on the bottom in case you have to set the bag down on wet surfaces. Can be dried and cleaned easily so as not to get the user wet. Shoulder straps attachments are somewhat thin, but if the material holds up, should be good.Over all a good do all pack that's been comfortable to wear having fun and convenient to use for my work. I'd probably buy it again regardless of some flaws because of the features it DOES have. Most of the problems I've described can be fixed with cheap aftermarket solutions although I wish I didn't need to. Been a great pack so far.

It was supposed to be larger than the Jester and simply wasn’t, idk the compartments don’t enlarge side ways and if you fill the big compartment you can’t put anything in the 2nd zip. The liter description is very misleading because it makes it seem as if you can fit more in it than you can. Let me start off by saying I LOVE this pack. Probably the best backpack I have ever purchased. High quality stitching, zippers, and interior/exterior fabric. I was looking for a pack that could do it all (everyday carry, laptop sleeve, travel/day pack, hiking compatible, hydration reservoir compatible, comfortable shoulder straps, hip belt, chest buckle, good amount of interior and exterior pockets). It even has sleeping pad straps on the bottom which I don’t know if I’ll ever use for that purpose, but I like to strap in my sandals down there. This bag achieves all of it. The water bottle pockets are great fabric and construction. Fits a 32 oz Nalgene perfectly and snug. Laptop sleeve is strong, sturdy, and soft at the same time. The zippers glide with ease and never get caught/stuck.Now the only CON… I wish the middle compartment had some pockets… but it’s okay, I’ll live with it. Also, sometimes it’s hard to find the zippers due to them being black and them getting lost in items I have in the side pockets.I previously had the REI Trail 25 and it was maybe half as good as this bag. This bag was only about $20 more. North Face will take my money any day after buying this bag. Highly recommend!

Great Bag
27 September 2023

So far this has been a great bag. The only reason I gave it a 4 is because I haven't had this for very long.Pros: Great size to carry riding your bike to work. Plenty of room in the two main interior pockets. I like that they adjust to fit more or you can keep them fairly compact with little in there. I like the top pocket for your wallet, keys, phone, pens etc. It has soft fabric to protect your phone screen.Cons: The only two things I can say I was disappointed with is the padding on the lap top pocket and the overall price. While it's separate compartment has a harder protective insert near your back, there is not much padding to protect your laptop from the second middle pocket.I thought this would qualify for the discount but it did not. Great backpack!

I wanted a new backpack for day trips/traveling. Like others have mentioned, this backpack does not sit upright on its own for anything. The big compartment doesn't have as much space as I was hoping for, but has enough. If you are buying it for school, I don't think you'd be able to fit a ton of books/binders in it. I did have my laptop in the laptop compartment and it did make quite a thunk when I set it down a little harder than I probably should have so I may use a sleeve for my laptop going forward. Other than that, I love everything about it. I love the front mesh stash pocket where I can stuff a cardigan/light jacket with easy access. I do also like that the bottom is adjustable, so if you don't have a lot of things in the bigger compartment you can slim down the backpack. All in all, I love the backpack for my purposes and would purchase it again.

I am an incoming college freshman and bought this backpack to use for school! For MONTHS I looked high and low for a quality backpack that would last throughout my college years and after hearing so many great things from friends and family about North Face backpacks, I decided this was the way to go! I was between the Jester, Borealis, and Recon styles and decided to get the Recon! It is a bit more expensive than the Jester or Borealis but let me tell you, it is worth EVERY PENNY. There are so many compartments including a very well padded laptop sleeve. I put all of my school supplies and my 13" macbook into it and there is still tons of room for all my textbooks and whatever else I may need. I also really love how the water bottle pockets are nylon but have elastics on the side. They can easily fit my 32 oz Hydroflask but won't rip since they're not mesh. Also there is a strap to tighten around the water bottle so it won't fall out! I truely believe that every detail of this backpack was just so well thought out 🙌🏻I have yet to wear it for a long period of time but I did fill it up to carry around my house lol and it is SO COMFORTABLE! I had a Vera Bradley backpack for high school and it dug into my shoulders so bad when it was full. This North Face Recon is nothing like that. Something about that woman- specific suspension design literally takes the load off shoulders! I'm entirely obsessed! Also the TNF Black Heather & Burnt Coral Metallic color combo is absolutely perfect- sophisticated with a bit of a girly touch :) I will recommend this backpack to everyone I come across. It is everything I wanted and more! I also recommend buying straight through North Face instead of a retailer- shipping was free and ridiculously fast. I got my backpack within four days of placing the order!

Modern redesign ruined a good pack

Having owned several Recons over the past few decades, I bought this without even thinking, and I regret it. Although, online reviews would not have steered me away because so many people apparently like this pack.Overall, this is an incredibly poorly designed pack that makes accessing basic functionality an annoying chore. Just setting down the pack in a chair is stressful, as it takes several tries to get it to stand up and not fall over or slide down the chair. The water bottle pockets are no longer made of a flexible material, but instead are very rigid, making it harder to get a 1L bottle in and out of them. The organization pockets are higher and don't go as deep as previous models. That space is mostly lost to being too shallow and having too many pockets that are too shallow and small to be useful. The zippers of the main compartment extend awkwardly into the water bottle side pockets and below the compression straps making them a chore to deal with.

My primary personal backpack

This fits my requirements for daily use and short-term travel: relatively compact profile, two exterior side pockets, my favorite color, chest strap and fits under the seat on airplanes (so far I've confirmed it'll work with seats on Southwest, United, Delta and American). The solid exterior pockets are a little less flexible than the mesh material used on previous models, but will still fit most 32oz-40oz bottles from CamelBak, Hydro Flask, Nalgene, etc. Large bottles will fit a little more tightly and if the main compartment is full, the bottles will bulge into the main compartment. If you need to regularly go through TSA without pre-check or Global Entry, the opening can be cumbersome. The backpack is more vertically oriented so you need to do a little digging to retrieve items at the bottom. It won't open as wide as bags where the zippers extend further down the sides. The smaller compartments are convenient for easy access to you passport, phone, charging cable, wallet and more. I like the stretchy mesh front pocket over the bungie cord style on similar bags. The mesh doesn't get caught on random things as much and looks more streamline for the office. The laptop compartment will fit any ~15" laptop plus a thin sleeve.Overall, if you need a backpack for your daily-carry items during the weeks and occasionally weekend trips, then it'll serve you well. If you need a more generous main compartment and easier access, another bag may be better for you.

Solid backpack but poor pocket design

This older Recon had served me well for over 10 years: I used it every day for my school backpack in high school and college, as well as a travel bag for study abroad and several other international trips. I have been using this new pack daily for 1 month, and have noticed some improvements but other downfalls:Pros:- Added laptop sleeve, separate from main compartment (won't scratch my laptop when taking books and other items out of the main pouch)- Water bottle pockets are solid fabric (they will not stretch out over time, and will be secure for tiny objects like coins or paper clips, which used to slip through the mesh holes in my older Recon)- ... MoreI bought this backpack about a month ago, after retiring my older Recon backpack that I purchased in 2011. The pouch stops halfway down the length of the backpack, creating a weird bulge in the middle of the backpack when the pouch is full and cutting out valuable storage space at the bottom of the pack. When I'm packing this bag for a whole day out at school or travel, maximal space efficiency is critical!- Feels small for advertised volume. Is this pack really 30L?? I have a 28 L Deuter pack which I use for day hikes, and it fits more clothes and water bottles than this one does.- Front mesh pocket seems flimsy. The fabric seems thin and delicate (not ideal for backpack exterior) and I'm worried it will stretch out over time.Summary: This Recon is a solid backpack, with improved frame size option for smaller bodies and improved pocket lining materials. However, the biggest downfall is the short middle pocket, which decreases the storage potential for this pack and negatively impacts the look when the pocket is full. North Face: please expand this pocket to its full depth!!

Very disappointed

I am currently in law school. I have been using North Face Recon backpacks since 7th grade. They were great quality, spacious, and comfortable to wear. When it came time to purchase a new backpack I knew I would be repurchasing the Recon and was excited to try out the new design.I love North Face and wish I had something positive to say about this bag, but it is truly awful. The downright dysfunction was immediately apparent, but I have continued to use the bag for over a year in hopes that it would get better. As other reviews have stated, it does not stand up on its own. It is near impossible to utilize the main compartment if anything is in the front two pockets as the top opening becomes too small to even put a textbook in. The bottom of the "organization" pocket is not attached to the front lining of the main compartment, creating an upside down pocket. Even if you manage to get a textbook or planner into the main compartment, it will get stuck in this pocket when you try to remove it from the backpack. I don't even attempt to put textbooks or notebooks in this backpack anymore and instead carry them in my hands. There is little to keep the main compartment from taking space away from the water bottle holders on this sides and it is difficult to slide the bottles in. The straps have notably lower padding and are generally lower quality than those on older Recon models. The back panel of the backpack is much more flimsy and hold MUCH more sweat than previous models.I loved my Recon bags for nine years. I am deeply disappointed in this redesign. It is unlikely that I will purchase a North Face bag again until functionality becomes a priority again. :(
