In my opinion the best movie ever made just got a whole lot better.Originally owned DVD set then upgraded to blu-ray box set and now this.Without getting technical, the uncompressed extended editions spread over 2 discs are the way to view this trilogy. With the HDR, better contrast, better colour saturation and the excellent audio (my Dolby atmos system gets a good workout) the movies never looked and sounded better.If you currently own the blu-ray set don’t hesitate and go and get these for a worthy upgrade.

Missed out when this was released earlier but had it shipped as soon as I saw it was available again.The 4K, like most other conversions, make it look brand new. Clarity is phenomenal especially with the NZ backdrop. CGI looks dated, but that's about it for criticism. Sound quality had hearing things I'd missed in previous editions.I already have all 3 films in the extended edition DVD box set, but this is well worth the investment to add to the collection.

Recently purchased The Hobbit and LOTR trilogies 4k. I have now viewed them all and can safely say they're basically technical masterpieces. The dolby atmos sound is phenomenal and picture quality is sharp with a slight bit of filmic grain. If you've never owned them or even own the extended blu-rays you still NEED to pick this up. Please listen to them with a good dolby atmos soundbar or surround system!

To be fair to my review, I decided to do an analysis of the visual content with my screen and player set to not enhance the image in any way, and use two digital cameras set to manual mode. Because it is film, and despite being quality film stock, it's not possible to capture fine details and that shows in this release.HDR - HDR is traditionally a multiple exposure technique for still photography. Given this title was recorded on film using a single exposure, the HDR for this title was generated during the transfer to digital format. With this title there is a 'cleaning up' of over-saturated light and especially enhances long shots whilst close up shots also benefit by allowing more detail to be seen that was otherwise masked by glare. The process also does a fantastic job of balancing out the colours and making them more vibrant. It also dampens the slight blue/green tint seen in the Blu-Ray version so the greys look grey and the snow much whiter.4K - There is a considerable difference in clarity between the Blu-Ray version and this one, but again the film negative is only sharp to a point. Wrinkles, beard and eyebrow hair, skin features and more are all better revealed. The CGI content is the major improvement for the title with long shots looking less like a painted backdrops and close ups, like the Balrog's mouth, giving a dentist a good chance of spotting decay. All up the HDR corrections coupled with the 4K resolution work so well that there are moments when the blend between live action and CGI is obvious.In summary you're not going to see something jaw dropping like Blade Runner 2049, but it's a visual improvement over the Blu-Ray in every way. Sound really isn't my thing so I would trust the other reviews when it comes to that.

The movies are fantastic as always!You wont be disappointed in the story.There are only three downsides which are1. the quality of the film. Being shot on older digital format and then transfered to 4k has made the film grainy in some parts.2. The new colour grade. The films overall are now more brighter and vibrant which really diminishes the impact of the darker scenes throughout the films.3. Lack of special features. There are no special features apart from getting the theatrical and extended edition of each movie.Other then that its lord of the rings! Highly enjoyable movies and its fantastic to watch on a big screen!
I have been a LOTR fan since 2000. Seen the movies at least 100 times. This 4K DVD re-master is truly amazing. Despite being 20 years old, easily stands up to even more recent digitalised movies.You will notice some details not noticeable before, especially some of the CGI, which is totally forgivable and adds to the nostalgia.Coupled with an LG C9 4K OLED and LGUK90 DVD player, the experience has been amazing. Very good detail, green screen tint removed, sharper details on surfaces and objects, deep black HDR scenes.
So firstly, this isn't a re-scan of the negative at 4k, it's the old 2k print scanned at 4k with colour correction and digital manipulation to "fix" and cover up some of the more ugly bits from the old blurays. So while this by no means looks terrible, it does mean that the film has been artificially sharpened or smoothed out depending on the scene they are working with. This leads to occasional waxy looking scenes and makes some digital effects stand out more. It means that LOTR could in fact look a lot better than this if done correctly.As disappointing as that is, this set is still worth it for its new colour correction which looks quite a lot more colourful now than the Extended blu-rays which were more on the green side. One of the greatest trilogy of films ever made have never looked or sound better. The only reason I haven't given this 5 stars is that it's a shame the original EE Boxset appendices aren't included on this. Otherwise what are you waiting for? The Ride of the Rohirrim has never been more grand to experience.
With all the hype around this release I was worried it might not deliver. However this goes beyond expectations. The 4K quality is beyond impressive, as well as the atmos track. The only down fall is the noticeable cgi in some scenes as the cgi looks a bit soft as it is still in 2k whilst the background of the scene is in 4K. This set is another leader showing what Dolby Vision is capable of. Only downfall is that the set comes in one of the thick bluray cases, was hoping for something more premium... but hey they’ll probably release another edition next year $$
