Suunto SK-8 Wrist Compass
The Suunto SK-8 Wrist. The high-quality liquid filled Suunto SK-8 has set a new standard for dive compasses. The device features 2-3 times larger tilt potential than in conventional diving compasses and provides easy-to-read numerals. The superior SK-8 has an exceptional tilt potential of +/-30 degrees, which is 2-3 times larger than in conventional diving compasses. The firm-grip bezel with a ratchet at every fifth degree is especially designed to prevent sand and dirt contamination, thus allowing smooth turning in all conditions. The compass is available as wrist, console and hose-mounted models. The SK-8 can also be fitted on the Suunto Cobra dive computer. It has easy-to-read numerals on a phosphorescent compass card and a large side-reading window. By adding different Suunto Combo consoles to the SK-8 compass, you can create a personal console accorging to your specific needs. For example, CB-double can be made by adding the SK-8/DS compass to the reverse side of the CB-One. Or you can configure your CB-one console to a CB-Two by adding an SK-8 compass on top. If you add the SK-8/DS compass on to the reverse side of the CB-Two In Line, you got a CB-Double in Line. And CB-Three In Line console is made by adding a SK-8 compass on top of a Two In Line console.

8th iteration of this compass from Suunto. Very solid, easy to use especially on the optional retractor, which allows it to be pointed easily underwater for accurate bearings. Easy to navigate with, an essential bit of kit! Half of our club dive with this, or an earlier version of the compass. This one can be used almost everywhere in the world, so much improved on version 7.

The compass is very forgiving if not held perfectly level. The card does not stick unless held at an extreme angle. The bezel rotates easily enough, while the detents hold your setting. The side window is easy to see, although on my compass the degree markings were slightly off, bezel vs. side window, but certainly close enough for u/w navigation. My only gripe about the compass is the wrist band. The band is not a traditional watch type band. There is molded catch that must be popped into a hole for the band to hold securely. This is very difficult to do with a gloved hand. Also, the band has a knob on the end which prevents the strap from completely coming out of the buckle. This made it impossible for me to put the compass on my wrist while wearing a drysuit ... MoreThe compass is very forgiving if not held perfectly level. I replaced the band with a longer velcro band, and it works perfectly now.

I really like this compass. It is easy to use and is quite forgiving if not held perfectly horizontal. I purchased this one as a replacement for my previous Suunto SK7 which suddenly stopped working one day. It looked like the magnetic card jumped off the pivot and, 100ft down it no longer worked! Back on the surface a couple of days later & it worked again, took it diving & same problem! GRrrr. I liked the compass so much that I'm giving it another shot with a new Suunto SK7 and hopefully this one will work out better - if not then I'm (reluctantly) going to find a different kind.I purchased the one with the wrist band simply because this was the cheapest version. My preference is to use it on a retractor clipped off to a shoulder D Ring so I put this one on my old retractor. I'd be a lot happier if Sunnto would just sell the bare compass module at a lower price to replace failed units.

Love this compass. Replaced my Ikelite compass with this one. Very easy to read and use, and the fact that it doesn't have to be perfectly level to read accurately is great. Really like the 5 degree increments instead of the usual 10 degree on other compasses. Nothing bad to say about the compass, rate it a 5 star. However...the wrist band is another issue. It's way too long, and the clasping mechanism is difficult to use. Fortunately, the boot that holds the compass is not fused with the band so the band can be removed and replaced with another. Find it a bummer that I have to spend another $15-$20 for a different band. How hard can it be to just change the design of the band to a normal buckle setup with the ability to trim it to whatever length you want? Guess ... MoreLove this compass. Guess they have their reasons, but for me, the band is a poor design, so gave the overall rating 4 stars.
Very happy with the purchase. It did take longer than expected/quoted for delivery but excited to get a quality compass at a great price.Pros:Best price by far on the SK8 compass. I paid less than 50% of cost listed on eBay or Amazon.Large side viewing windowConvenient bungee cord strapsCons:Very large compass for the wrist. I am 5’10” & 180 lbs and it is quite big for my wrist
Purchased this compass for my suunto zoom Guage combo and couldn't be more happy with it. Makes the computer a little longer but it its better than adding bulk to the back of the computer. Great value and works excellent.
Ok So.. I admit I'm a rookie...but this thing was a game changer for me. I no longer have to tilt my compass all over the place and cross my fingers I have it level. The tilt on this is awesome and leaves no guess work.I also want to add that I had no problems attaching this to my combo. Just a couple screws and bam!.. done.I am farsighted. I have Rx dive masks and I always have trouble reading my other compass. Well, not any more! The view window is plenty large!Ive used this thing numerous times and I haven't come up off course yet!. Until I bought this I admit I was getting off course more than I'd like to admit. As a new diver... This thing is GOLD! A must have for any diver!.
I just needed a replacement SK8 capsule. Aquanauts was the only place I cold find that sold just the capsule at a reasonable price. I was phoned by Acuanauts before they dispatched item to make sure I realised I was buying a capsule and not the whole compass. Great customer service. Prompt delivery too!
There are two versions of this compass. One with strap and one with elastic bands. The strap version is quite short, and since the strap is also protected from being able to slide out, it is very difficult to get it around the sleeves for dry-drawn gloves. It's almost impossible to get it on your arm without the need for some violence. Then you dive in a dry suit so choose it with elastic bands. The compass itself is nothing to do with. Very sturdy and a must have.
Having a compass is a must in many situations. I've used the Suunto Sk-7 mounted to a Suunto computer for 12 years. It is excellent and easy to read. However, because it is end mounted, it can take a beating if you drag your equipment. I've had to replace two units because I was careless. One had the compass dial come loose from the spindle. The other had broken direction indicators. If you carry metal rods for digging, or spearguns with metal rods, keep them away from the compass when you are actually using the compass, because the metal rods can temporarily affect the compass reading. Personally I prefer this "old fashion" type of compass to an electronic compass – maybe it's just what you get used to.
