I couldn't hear what he said, but he mimed putting his hand on his ear so I did that and WOW, I could hear clearly. Just cup your hand over your right ear and the noisy world is back. After using these for a month or so I have come to appreciate the ease of use. How intuitive is that? And another double tap stops playback. It has two tactile buttons located out of the way on the left earcup that have easy function. The power button that is on/off with a two second push or Bluetooth seek mode if you hold for about seven seconds. The other button cycles through noise cancelling, ambient sound, or off. AND all functions come with a pleasant announcement of the status such as "power on" slight pause, then "Bluetooth connected" is what I hear each morning at work. I am not an audiophile, but I believe the reviews from those who are that praise the sound quality because it is pretty stunning to me. The most amazing effect has to be the noise canceling though. It is like being in a cocoon within the larger world, but it can be frightening when you stop the effect suddenly. I tried driving to the store with them on the first day I had them and actually pulled over to check on my car when I cancelled the noise cancelling to make sure I wasn't missing something. The road noise in a 2017 Rav4 is scary when you step out of complete isolation. After pulling over in a parking lot and walking around the car to make sure I didn't have a flat tire or something I decided to use the ambient sound setting for my trip. I really don't recommend using these for ANY time you really need to be connected to the outside world, but during lunchtime at work you can enter "a world apart" for real.

I had heard some spectacular things about the first iteration of these headphones and some short sessions listening in the stores was always good but not a REAL test, so I had a very hard time deciding whether or not I wanted to risk getting burned again. When the early reviews of XM2s came out and said that they blew the first generation away, I knew I had to give them a shot and boy am I glad I did.While going through my 4-hour headphone test (I told you, I'm an audiophile), I didn't feel the need to rip these off my head once due to ear pressure. They did get a bit hot but that is to be expected with many headphones that use a leather/protein leather covering for their earpads and that are also closed back. My longest stretch with them now is six hours while at work, and while they did get popped off for short runs away from my desk (a little rude to talk to co-workers while keeping headphones on, or so they tell me), for the 97% of that time, they were on my head. They also didn't feel as hot, now whether that is because of the short breaks or the fact that it is like an icebox in my office, I don't care because they are going to spend most of their life in the office. I have someone who listens to their music JUST loud enough to bug the rest of us but not enough for us to enjoy with them (her music taste is pretty bad anyway). I also have a couple of people who eat their lunch over a period of two hours and I would swear that they were polishing off a bag of chips (family sized, not individual sized) every day. Oh, and they both chew with their mouth open!As for the sound quality, I ran them through my battery of tests including my list of songs from every genre listening for all the subtle cues I know are there (singer taking a breath, catching some background conversation in the intro/outro). I also use the Sound Check and Dr. Chesky suite of headphone/speaker testing tracks to run them through the frequency sweeps and the tracks specifically recorded to test depth, spatialization, atmosphere, transparency, and presence. Also, I can determine the 'tightness' of the bass or if the headphone displays any sibilance. It may sound like a lot, but I have owned some seriously expensive headphones in the past and when you are dropping that kind of coin on a headphone, you want to be sure.So, my suite of songs are as follows:Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody (because this song has everything)Massive Attack - Teardrop (nice blend of bass and highs)Enya - Caribbean Blue (perfect for voice and presence)Beastie Boys - Brass Monkey (it is a mix of a lot and it is kind of 'sloppy', you will notice with good headphones but not bad ones)Jimi Hendrix - All Along The Watchtower (great punch and highs, as well as a lot of back and forth between left and right channels, plus it's Jimi)Gladiator Soundtrack - Now We Are Free (again a wide range but really great for sibilance, which by the way is an over-exaggeration or sharpness to the 'S' sound)Ottmar Lieber - Barcelona Nights (perfect for checking that notes sound clear, precise, and sharp. The speed of the flamenco guitar can make some headphones sound a bit muddy when the notes kind of blend)Led Zeppelin - When the Levee Breaks (Robert Plant can really test a set of headphones)Def Leppard - Pour Some Sugar On Me (purely for the visceral response you get with the screaming guitars and drums)I've got a lot more in my list but that is a good sampling if you want to do a test yourself. Across the board, the Sony's did a fabulous job and in fact, some of the songs I feel sounded better with the NC on vs. off. The Sony's have a pretty pure and clean sound with the NC turned off and can actually sound a bit sharp and sibilant but the NC adds a bit of warmth to the track that kind of mellows those out. I prefer this since I tend to be pretty sensitive to the higher frequency range and Some Songs Send Shooting Screaming pain into my ears with certain brands of headphones. In addition bass seems to be tight and well controlled and not 'flabby' at all, with plenty of 'punch' that I would kind of expect from them and especially from a closed back set.As for the noise cancelling, these do an extremely good job, and while it may not be the freakishly quiet you may get from Bose, I actually prefer the Sony system, because they don't cause my eardrums to ache and it sounds more natural. The ambient mode is good for just knocking down some major noise while still being able to keep your wits about you. In the end though, they are going to help me keep my job that I love because I won't be choking the life out of some of my office-mates (a win - win for everyone).The iPhone app for the headphones lets you do some neat things such as optimizing the NC settings just for you by sending out a series of tones and then detecting how they come back and with that information the software can come up with the best way to maximize the noise cancelation. You can also add some 'surround' features but I will never use this feature because it does some really weird things to the music and to me none of the settings really approximates the set-up it says it is.The headphone controls are sharp, intuitive, and very responsive. It is really easy to raise and lower the volume, switch tracks, and even answer the phone. The built in mic also does a great job and my wife said I sounded better than just talking into the phone. The 'Quick Attention' feature also works well when you just put you hand up to the right ear cup and the music pauses so you can talk to someone quickly and then can go back to your music.I have only one gripe about the headphones and that is the case. While I love how compact it holds everything, I would really have liked an internal storage area for the cables. There is a little slot in the divider between the ear cups for the airplane adaptor (which I haven't used in YEARS) but no place for the cords. There is a little pouch on the outside but that kind of ruins the nice and compact shape of the case if you just shove the cords in there. That is seriously my ONLY complaint and that is such an incredibly minute detail, that I contemplated leaving it out but I didn't want this to be too positive!Anyway, these are fabulous noise cancelling headphones, and even just headphones in general. They beat the heck out of some wildly popular brand that all the kiddies seem to love but really are all hype. They even beat the heck out of some headphones that are several hundred dollars more than these. The fact that Sony took what were already very highly reviewed headphones, amped them up even more and also dropped the price by $50, makes these a no brainer. Seriously, these should take over as THE flagship noise canceling headphones over Bose. It's not even a question in my mind.

One of the coolest thing is the Ambient Sound, where you cup the right touch panel and you can hear your surrounding environment noise because the Mic gets activated and plays the noise through the speakers therefore, you would have to pop one ear out when some speaks with you. I also like the headphone connect app, it allows you customize equalizer and it makes the music/video experience sound better. Starting with lack of app availability; it is only available on Mobile OS. I primarily connect these headphones to my desktop or laptop computer work or personal. However, I can't download the app therefore, i don't get the cool equalizer configuration, which is disappointing because once you have experience that you want to continue experiencing. Unfortunately, it does not retain that setting on the headphones when connecting to other devices. Since, I wear glasses it does seem to pinch my frames to the side of my head. Over a long period of time it does seem to hurt. However, I have worn these headphones without glasses and I could wear these for hours. Also, you can get pretty hot with these headphones be wary in using it during hot days. As for the price, it just didn't seem justified to pay close to $400 (Unit price + 2 yr warranty + taxes) especially, when you play with the sound settings on the app and you can't get it on non Mobile OS. I had to return these headphones and I would have kept them is only they had the app on multiple types of Operating Systems.

Across the board, the Sony's did a fabulous job and in fact, some of the songs I feel sounded better with the NC on vs. off. The Sony's have a pretty pure and clean sound with the NC turned off and can actually sound a bit sharp and sibilant but the NC adds a bit of warmth to the track that kind of mellows those out. I prefer this since I tend to be pretty sensitive to the higher frequency range and Some Songs Send Shooting Screaming pain into my ears with certain brands of headphones. In addition bass seems to be tight and well controlled and not 'flabby' at all, with plenty of 'punch' that I would kind of expect from them and especially from a closed back set.As for the noise cancelling, these do an extremely good job, and while it may not be the freakishly quiet you may get from Bose, I actually prefer the Sony system, because they don't cause my eardrums to ache and it sounds more natural. The ambient mode is good for just knocking down some major noise while still being able to keep your wits about you. In the end though, they are going to help me keep my job that I love because I won't be choking the life out of some of my office-mates (a win - win for everyone).The iPhone app for the headphones lets you do some neat things such as optimizing the NC settings just for you by sending out a series of tones and then detecting how they come back and with that information the software can come up with the best way to maximize the noise cancelation. You can also add some 'surround' features but I will never use this feature because it does some really weird things to the music and to me none of the settings really approximates the set-up it says it is.The headphone controls are sharp, intuitive, and very responsive. It is really easy to raise and lower the volume, switch tracks, and even answer the phone. The built in mic also does a great job and my wife said I sounded better than just talking into the phone. The 'Quick Attention' feature also works well when you just put you hand up to the right ear cup and the music pauses so you can talk to someone quickly and then can go back to your music.I have only one gripe about the headphones and that is the case. While I love how compact it holds everything, I would really have liked an internal storage area for the cables. There is a little slot in the divider between the ear cups for the airplane adaptor (which I haven't used in YEARS) but no place for the cords. There is a little pouch on the outside but that kind of ruins the nice and compact shape of the case if you just shove the cords in there. That is seriously my ONLY complaint and that is such an incredibly minute detail, that I contemplated leaving it out but I didn't want this to be too positive!Anyway, these are fabulous noise cancelling headphones, and even just headphones in general. They beat the heck out of some wildly popular brand that all the kiddies seem to love but really are all hype. They even beat the heck out of some headphones that are several hundred dollars more than these. The fact that Sony took what were already very highly reviewed headphones, amped them up even more and also dropped the price by $50, makes these a no brainer. Seriously, these should take over as THE flagship noise canceling headphones over Bose. It's not even a question in my mind.

One of the coolest thing is the Ambient Sound, where you cup the right touch panel and you can hear your surrounding environment noise because the Mic gets activated and plays the noise through the speakers therefore, you would have to pop one ear out when some speaks with you. I also like the headphone connect app, it allows you customize equalizer and it makes the music/video experience sound better. Starting with lack of app availability; it is only available on Mobile OS. I primarily connect these headphones to my desktop or laptop computer work or personal. However, I can't download the app therefore, i don't get the cool equalizer configuration, which is disappointing because once you have experience that you want to continue experiencing. Unfortunately, it does not retain that setting on the headphones when connecting to other devices. Since, I wear glasses it does seem to pinch my frames to the side of my head. Over a long period of time it does seem to hurt. However, I have worn these headphones without glasses and I could wear these for hours. Also, you can get pretty hot with these headphones be wary in using it during hot days. As for the price, it just didn't seem justified to pay close to $400 (Unit price + 2 yr warranty + taxes) especially, when you play with the sound settings on the app and you can't get it on non Mobile OS. I had to return these headphones and I would have kept them is only they had the app on multiple types of Operating Systems.

I also own a Sony NWZ-A15 Walkman and when I tried the Bluetooth connection, it happened immediately and the Sony propriety LDAC Hi-Res audio mode was recognised and automatically selected, so I'm even able to listen to my Hi-Res files wirelessly. Late at night, I can mute my loudspeakers, then use the included mini-jack cable (no ¼" adaptor supplied) to connect to my amplifier and listen to my PC with no problems.I've not flown anyway yet (only had them 2 weeks!) but on the train the ANC (with minimal affect on the sound characteristics) was very good and the "touch sensor" hand control worked very well with my Walkman, including the cupped earpiece mode to hear the guard announcements was a real bonus, so a great feature. They also weight less that the PSB's so another benefit.My only hiccup was having trouble trying to Bluetooth connect to other devices, but upon reading the manual (RTFM) I discovered that after the first device connects more or less straight away, you then need to hold down the connect button for more that 7 seconds for any additional devices (up to 8) to work, so be warned!I've downloaded the App to enable any future firmware updates etc. but don't need any of the sound field or eq modes, as the sound is just fine for me in the "normal" (flat) mode.I am therefore very happy that Sony have produced a great product luckily just when I needed it, what more can I say?

Short power button press makes headphones tell the battery charge status, but it's only within Low/Med/High, not actual percentage.Audio quality - real good via Bluetooth with deep lows and crisp highs, but headphones really opened up when I used a wired connection!Noise cancelling - Sony uses innovative approach - noise cancelling is ambient aware and if you choose to - you can select an option to allow human voice thru which is useful when you expect someone to talk to you. Noise cancelling level is conveniently controlled by the button on the left headphone or thru the mobile app (button gives you 3 levels - Off, Ambient Aware and Full Noise cancelling, and you get 20 different noise cancelling levels via the App control!). There is a slight static noise that noise cancelling introduces on very low volume levels but it's not audible when music is playing.Mobile application provides a number of other functions as well - balance control, equalizer and a small DSP (you can switch between DSP modes to give you a concert hall or opera effect), I did not find that very useful since I prefer to listen to my music as it was recorded.The only snag I had - was Bluetooth pairing with 2 devices (phone and laptop) at the same time, Sony does not seem to handle it very well. I also did have an issue where headphones would pair to the phone and play music, but mobile app won't see them completely.Overall - I love these! Hope that few Bluetooth snags I had will be fixed in the future firmware update.

For my trial, I wore these for 4 flights that literally took me to the other side of the world and back (over 30 hours on an airplane). First, the sound quality is excellent, and music comes across beautifully. The app allows you to adjust equalizer settings which is also a nice plus. As for fit, they were very comfortable around my ears but overall felt heavy, with a pressure point on my head where the band went across. Initially this wasn't a problem but after several hours it became marginally uncomfortable. It takes 1-2 seconds for the command to process, and I found it easier and less annoying to the person I was speaking with to just pull it away from my ear for the conversation.But overall I was not overly impressed with the noise cancellation. If I had the volume turned up to medium or loud they worked well, but for music at lower volumes you could still hear some level of ambient noise. If I had to guess I would say they filtered out 80%, but for the price I was expecting better. Overall a really nice set of headphones, but for me I didn't see the significant value and ended up returning them for the Sony WH-CH700N, which were on sale for 50% off. They were slightly lighter, had a more comfortable fit and about the same noise cancellation performance... so for me the price difference was not worth it.

These work well as my family could not hear what I was playing in the same room even at a decent volume. So if you want 1) impressive noise cancelling 2) high quality sound 3) no noticeable noise leakage these headphones are at the top of your listThe CONs: They take a bit of time getting used to wearing them, the metal headband is quite highly sprung so it feels like it is clamping the side of your head a bit. This does improve a little especially as I stretched them apart a bit to get around that. They feel quite heavy for some reason but saying that I held my older headphones of another make and they felt the same weight. It's just a feeling you can get wearing them.They feel a bit warm around the ears after about 1-2 hours of wearing these so you feel the need to take them off for several minutes before putting them back on agian. Connecting up with bluetooth can be a pain if you use them on several devices so tend to switch around with the bluetooth service on each device so that the most common device pairs up and connects straight away. The swiping of the volume seems to go up in 5s so if at 20 a swipe up is 25 to get 50 it's 6 swipes (just looks a bit odd to others).The conferance call functionality is fine if you turn off noise cancelling and you are in a quiet room, but in an open plan office forget it the microphones are on the outside of the cup and it picks up all of the ambient noise it's as if you are talking on the phone in the middle of a market. The poor conference call functionality is a big miss by Sony, people buy these to work in open plan offices 1) to cancel out noise 2) to use on conference calls. Well 2) you can't do it just picks up all noise around you. For conference calls I take this off and use a cheapo USB headphone / microphone set that is close to your mouth. Sony need to think about this one because if they had a quality directional microphone positioned in the right place they'd sweep up the market.

I found that the noise cancelling was a bit better and music sounded significantly crisper on the Sony’s. After buying the 1000 XM2’s, it is as if I live in an entirely different apartment. With just noise cancelling alone, my neighbors’ TVs, music, and fighting are completely inaudible. The stomping and loud traffic noises are also dramatically reduced, and sometimes can’t be heard at all. I have now found myself significantly less stressed and am able to enjoy my home again. I never write product reviews, but simply had to for these. If you want near-absolute peace and quiet with the click of a button, then don’t waste time with anything else. As somebody who is noise-sensitive, the Sony 1000 XM2’s are phenomenal and now a necessity for city living.

I can see why these headphones might be on backorder from their popularity because, indeed, their performance turned out to be outstanding.The instructions gave more than one option for setting up the Bluetooth connection to my phone. One method was simply to power up the headphones, search for them in the Bluetooth devices detected by the phone, and pair and connect them. I decided on a second route, which was to download SONY's Headphones Connect software from Google Play, and connect through NFC, placing my phone next to the headphones. The process worked flawlessly and also gave me a menu where I could control some settings on the headphones such adaptive sound control, optimization of noise cancelling, and an equalizer for music.Although I could not try them on an airplane as planned, I found a good substitute: listening to music from my Samsung Note7 while standing next to my dryer that was noisily spinning dry a large load of laundry. After selecting a delicate musical piece to play, I walked into the laundry room and was startled to find that I heard absolutely no sound from my noisy dryer, even when I placed my head just inches away from it. It was uncanny. I walked out of the laundry room to the kitchen where I had put a pot on the stove a few minutes earlier, and, again, found that I heard nothing but the sweet music. Furthermore, the sound quality was super-excellent; I heard all sorts of subtle things in the music that I had never heard when listening to the song with ordinary external speakers. I continued to work in the kitchen and then was amazed again when I looked at a timer I had set for the pot on the stove. It had gone off a minute and a half ago and I did not detect the loud beeping the alarm makes. This is both a testimony to the noise-cancelling power of the headphones but also a warning about using them when you need to be aware of sounds in your environment.A button easily found by touch on the left headphone turns the unit off or on. A second button next to turns noise cancelling on or off and allows Ambient Sound Mode in which you can hear sounds around you while wearing the headset. A good idea if you are cooking. But I would never wear these headphones in any mode while driving a car or riding a bike—that would be too dangerous.Music control can be made with finger motions on the outer surface of the right headphone. The movements are intuitive and easy to use for the most part. You swipe forward or backward to advance to the next music track or return to the previous track. You swipe up to increase music volume and swipe down to decrease it. The only control I found difficult was the pause-resume function, executed by a tap in the center of the headphone. Because the surface of the phone is perfectly smooth, there is no way to tell by sense of touch where the center might be, so it takes me several taps to find the center to pause or resume play. One other very useful feature is to temporarily turn the volume way down, which is accomplished by placing your entire palm over the right headphone and holding it there. I can see this as being very useful if someone wants to talk to you and you would like to instantly turn the volume way down.One thing about the headphones that worried me for a few minutes was whether they would work wirelessly with my Windows 10 laptop. The headphone box says "for Android, iOS" with no mention of Windows, and the pictorial instructions show the headphones being connected with the provided audio wire to the audio jack of a laptop. Turned out there was no need to worry, although I had to search for instructions on the Web. Because I had already paired the headphones with my cell phone, the instructions said I had to hold the power button down for seven seconds to enter pairing mode. After doing this, I immediately saw the headphones among the Bluetooth devices detected by my laptop and was able to easily pair and connect the headphones. Now, when I want to practice my German language lessons or watch a video without disturbing or being disturbed by people around me, I can easily grab my headphones, power them up, and have a good audio experience with my laptop.The headphones come with a very solid-looking stereo 3.5mm audio cable, which I have had no reason to use yet, a usb charging cable, and a very nice case for the headphones. These accessories, plus the downloadable software for my cell phone, are very much appreciated.In terms of comparing these headphones to other models, the only basis for comparison I have is a brief experience with my wife's noise-cancelling headphones, which she bought for our flights to Utah and California. I tried them and found that they were extremely effective for muffling the sound of the plane and even a crying baby. Maybe not quite as good as the SONY headphones, though, and they were far less comfortable. My wife said that her headphones were quite uncomfortable after wearing them for two hours, and that has not been the case with my SONY headphones while watching long movies. On the other hand, the price of her phones was one-tenth (that's right, one-tenth!) the price of the SONY headphones. I received the SONY headphones free for writing this review, so obviously I appreciate their somewhat better quality. Whether the price is worth it to you will be something you have to decide.
