I bought the kettle first and was so thrilled, I couldn't resist and purchased the toaster the following month. A little larger than I expected but still not too big to sit comfortably on almost all kitchen worktops. I got the '4 in a row' toaster and there's plenty of room, in all 4 slots for the thickest slice's of bread and bagels etc. It has a very expensive and distinctive look about it. I got the White (an kettle to match,) and couldn't be happier. The set have totally given my kitchen a lift. They ooze quality and look an feel like they'll last for years n years. My expectations for this toaster were pretty high...it's Smeg - it should be good! Sadly no...I can't say we've had the toasting issues that other reviewers have reported (at first!). But our right hand slots literally blew up (!) whilst toasting & tripped our fuse box - consequently we now have half a toaster working. But the side that is still toasting, I have noticed that over the course of the past 2 years, it used to toast perfectly on setting 4 - we're now on setting 6 & it is barely toasting. Luckily we are JUST inside our 2 year guarantee & I am waiting on a replacement toaster. But I'm not feeling hopeful for the next one! Would I recommend it - for the price, absolutely NO! We have bought cheaper toasters that have lasted longer.

Had a new kitchen and decided to splash out on a smeg toaster. The first one went back because the pop out crumb tray mechanism didn't work. Overall the quality isn't what I'd expect for something with this price tag. Many of the component parts are plastic, not metal. The bread is not uniformly toasted: one side always less cooked than the other. There is a very annoying lip around the toasting slots which catches all the crumbs and requires a small brush to remove them. So in terms of design and function I am disappointed in smeg. I wouldn't buy this brand again.

I bought the kettle first and was so thrilled, I couldn't resist and purchased the toaster the following month. A little larger than I expected but still not too big to sit comfortably on almost all kitchen worktops. I got the '4 in a row' toaster and there's plenty of room, in all 4 slots for the thickest slice's of bread and bagels etc. It has a very expensive and distinctive look about it. I had this in the chrome option. It looks so smart! Excellent toaster with all the settings etc you would need to do the toast just as you like it. I have the matching kettle as well which makes a great looking pair in the kitchen. It delivers on style and function. Very pleased.

I followed the instructions at the outset, by putting each side, without bread on full this apparently allows the heating elements to reach the correct temperature for toasting. The following cycles may take less time to toast... 'May' interesting word. I used fresh Roberts brown bread, two slices in the first two slots from the left, currently the dial is set to 5.5 (maximum setting 6), the bread is barely toasted, the colour is no different to the bread going in the toaster just feels a little harder. I will be contacting John Lewis today for a full refund, absolute waste of money in my opinion. The problem I now have is the SMEG kettle is working perfectly and given both were purchased together, I am not sure where I stand if I don't want a SMEG kettle and toaster set.
I bought this toaster along with the matching kettle, to replace my Dualit.The toaster has 6 browning options (which I think relates to minutes). I like my toast fairly well browned so i use #6. It comes out lightly browned on this highest setting & very patchy, with the top part hardly cooked at all.I sent the 1st one back to Smeg (easy enough to do), but the 2nd one is the same.I wouldn't recommend if you like your toast fully browned! For the price I would have expected so much more & wish I had stuck with the other make!

This is room temperature average width sliced bread - one side a nice shade of brown, the other - slightly warm. Closer inspection shows the heating elements "stitched" randomly in each section, some flat, some curved closer to the toast, so there is no wonder there is no even performance. It is also massive, what have they put inside it to make it need to be so chunky? I'm feeling a fool for spending a disgusting amount of money on a toaster that never fails to annoy and disappoint in equal measure every time I use it. Good Points: Honestly I only bought this because my wife wanted it. I was skeptical on how and why a toaster could cost as much as it did. But there's truth in the adage of "you get what you pay for". It's absolutely brilliantly built, no other toaster I've owned compares.

It is a gorgeous bit of kitchen kit, but does take up a bit of space, so be mindful of that. I also love the blue - in the various online pictures the shade of blue really seems to vary, but I was delighted to see that it's a baby blue shade and absolutely the thing for my new kitchen. Re toasting, both slots work perfectly, but you don't need it very high to get a well toasted product. Mine's on 2.5 - oh yes, it comes in half degrees of lovely toasty brownness! I bought this to match a Smeg blender I already have in white. Love the brand and it's retro style. The toaster is what it is ... a toaster, does what it says on the tin. It has wider slots than my previous much cheaper one. Settings are easy to use. The one thing I've noticed is that it doesn't drop hardly any crumbs underneath and actually collects them in the push out trays below .... Yes finally a toaster that collects crumbs! Looks super stylish. The only reason I've given it 4 stars is the price. It is basically a toaster and like most things you're paying for the brand. Also like the fact you can get extra accessories like a warming rack which for the price would've been nice to be included. I do recommend Smeg as a brand though and have a few of their products.
