Shimano XC501 MTB Shoes - Black 42
The Shimano XC501 mountainbike shoe for men is the perfect cycling shoe for the avid cyclist that has certain standards concerning his shoe choice. The shoe has a Boa L6 closure to ensure precise adjustment of the fit, without having any worrisome pressure points as all pressure evenly distributes itself along the wires covering the foot. The toes are equipped with a velcro strap to ensure a good fit. The sole of the Shimano XC501 is made of a combination of nylon injected with glasfiber. Making the sole comfortable enough for long rides while still being stiff enough to transfer enough power to the pedals; reducing power loss per pedal stroke. The shoe's rubber outer sole is made in collaboration with Michelin, ensuring an expert rubber is used. This rubber sole has been made to achieve proper grip in slippery and muddy terrain while the stubs are designed to get rid of mud and dirt sticking to the shoe. Stopping the soles of getting overloaded and helping with grip. The upper part of the SHimano XC501 mountainbike shoe is made of a combination of mesh, TPU and synthetic leather. Having a positive effect on ventilation and good impact resistance.

Replacing a pair of old Shimano mtb shoes with the 3 velcro straps and mesh inserts that have served me well. My out of the box impression of the XC5 is the BOA system is just not for me - it limits the shoes to a small opening so squeezing/angling your foot into it is a PITA. The BOA adjustment is adequate but a traditional 3 strap system feels more secure to me. Also not a fan of the 1 piece synthetic upper that has a thin, plasticky, non-conforming feel - my old ones are more padded and more substantial. TBF I haven't ridden these (I'm returning) so they might break in somewhat with saddle time.Positive: the Michelin outsole tread material feels like it would provide better traction than the hard plastic outsoles on lower models BUT it is more of a true XC ... I've worn Shimano bike shoes for years because they fit narrow feet but these didn't work at all. To attempt a snug fit, I had to crank the BOA down but that created too much pressure on top of upper foot without adequately snugging my mid foot. The shoe opening is pretty high so the front/opening/tongue seems to press against front of ankle so potential for hotspot and/or abrasion- No substantial front lugs on outsole so could be an issue if you have steep hike-a-bikes- Michelin outsole not as grippy as Vibram found on other higher-end shoes- The velcro strap on forefoot is worthlessA single BOA closure for the whole front foot doesn't work for me so I returned these and upgraded to the SH-XC7 with a double BOA.Note: Shimano sizing is strange - I'm a 9.5 ... I buy Shimano bike shoes because they fit my skinny feet. I have an old pair of road shoes that have 1 ratchet closure and 2 straps and that fits perfectly. I was looking for something similar as I tried a 3 strap shoe in another brand (did not work). So these fit my skinny feet but when I tighten the Boa to snug my fore foot, the part around my ankles squeezes pretty hard and becomes uncomfortable. They are a little large but ideally I would wear a 43.5 but I haven't found those in years. A big draw back is how hot my feet get in them. The ventilation feels nonexistent. Between that and the squeeze on the ankle I am aware them most if the ride. It gets hot riding in the Sacramento Valley in the summer but with these I am dumping water on my feet at each stop. I gave this shoe a 4 star rating due to its fit and performance. The toe-box is incredibly room, albeit a bit short compared to similar sizes in other brands. They were comfortable right out of the box and had minimal heel slippage when walking. Truly, they are one of the most comfortable mountain bike shoes I've ever worn. These are not without there faults though. As much as I like the laces, I have found them a bit short. Because of this, they do not tuck away neatly into the lace port as other brands. This might be from my wider forefoot but I do think they would benefit from a slightly longer lace. The second aspect I would have like would be an additional set of eyes at the top of the top like in a running shoe. That would allow for an alternate Altra-like ... The second aspect I would have like would be an additional set of eyes at the top of the top like in a running shoe. That would allow for an alternate Altra-like lacing pattern that really anchors the heel.Lastly, as to the title of the review, I would advise against these if they are going to be used for rocky, technical terrain where crashes are inevitable. I slid on the side of a rocky outcropping and tore a hole in the side of the shoes. Granted, it was operator error and I don't blame the rip on the shoe or a manufacturing defect, but it would be wise to consider the applications. I originally bought these for both the mountain and gravel bikes and they now may be just relegated to dirt roads.
I have been riding this shoe for about 3 months now, and it performs really well. I use it both on MTB and gravel rides. It has good stiffness and it feels like I am getting good power transfer to the pedal. The tread is aggressive enough on muddy trails, but the compound also sticks if you walk onto a tile floor at a bakery stop. The break-in period was relatively pain-free, however, I forced crumpled paper into the shoe to stretch it a bit after the first ride. I have slightly wider foot in the toe-box area, and had to take a few shorter rides early on. On my first ride over 60 km, I got hot foot toward the end, but not entirely surprising (your results may vary). The shoe cleans up pretty well. So much I should probably write a review". You might not like them. I like chocolate ice cream, but I have heard there are psychopaths who do not.
I wear an 11.5US shoe, and bought the 47EU size (approx. 11.8US). I have average width feet, and my index toes are longer than my big toes. When wearing low ankle, thin running socks, the fit feels really good. The index toes do not feel crunched. I also purposely do not wear thick socks with this shoe, as my feet become slightly fatter when riding vigorously. I have never had shoes with a BOA closure, but learning how to use it was quick and easy (gently pull out to unlock, push in and turn clockwise to tighten).I also purposely bought this shoe as the tread pattern is designed to work with the Shimano M series SPD (I got the M9100 model). For noobs, another important secret to feeling good in these shoes is after you "clip-in" to your SPD, pull the pedal back ... The action of clipping in can jam your toes towards the front of the shoe, and initiallly pedaling by pulling back for a few cycles will take the pressure off. I love, love, love the full pull and push cycle in these shoes. Allows me to ride in higher gears, especially up hills. I am usually on a 58lb Yuba Supermarché cargo bike with 40lbs of groceries or my 15lb dog in the box. For hills, I need all the help I can get.
I got these shoes because I was looking for a new XC and gravel shoe. These shoes are lightweight and pretty stiff compared to my old carbon shoes that I have. My first impression is that they were tough to put on. The shoes have this overlapped tongue, so you have to put the shoe apart to get the shoes on. Compared to my previous shoes that have a regular tongue which is easier to put on. Once the shoes were on, I noticed they were very comfortable. I hopped on my mountain bike and took off around my normal loop. They don't flex as much despite not having a carbon sole and the Michelin rubber on the sole provides a lot of grip. The Boa dial is easy to use too. I would rate these 4.5 stars but I don't like the overlapped tongue.Pros: Stiff, Boa dial is easy to use, ... I'm best described as an advanced mtb rider. I've worn only Shimano mountain shoes over the years and this shoe is by far the best fitting shoe I've owned. It seems that the design snugs your foot with the best heel cup than any other shoe I own. The BOA cinch system allows for the better feel as well, a very good design. I also own the older ME3 and MT701, and while the ME3 is still super durable and going strong, the sole flexes more, and while the MT701 is also well built, its sole flexes much more, but easier to walk in. All around for a more efficient pedal stroke the XC501 is a great purchase, nice and stiff, for less hike a bike situations sure, but with an outstanding fit and a total winner. Love these shoes. These are very comfortable shoes. They look smart but nothing special, i.e. they won't stand out from the crowd. Function over fashion I suppose. Ventilation is good. I rode in sunny early spring days at +8 with a bit of wind chill and half-way through the ride had to change to warmer socks. Not an issue really as you would expect that from summer shoes. The BOA system works fine and you can get the level of fit that you need after couple of rides. Ones my feet went almost numb as I overtightened the cable. But then you know how tight you want it. The other point is that the metal cleat sticks out slightly soo when you walk it scratches against the tarmac/asphalt. I realise that most MTB shoes are like that but it I have another pair of Northwave and their cleats ... MoreThese are very comfortable shoes. Now that I have the correct size, these shoes are great! I usually wear 39EU for day to day footwear and 40EU for running shoes. I had previously bought some Shimano MW5 boots and 40EU was too big. So on that basis and using the guide, I thought I was a 39EU. These were too small. So it would appear the women's sizing is different to the unisex shoes. The 40EU was perfect. The there is a slight flex in the shoe, which makes them comfortable for walking in, when needs be. The sole offers fantastic grip. They're a wee bit awkward to put on, due to the attached tongue, but it means there is no movement, which I like.
