I had so many smaller hard drives just sitting around with data on them that it's not even funny.Although there are, of course, hubs and such and housing capabilities for the drives, when you have a Mac mini your options can only go so far to the point where you either buy a super expensive hub with TONS of faster ports, or you buy this larger, economical hard drive and save yourself a bunch of money on a way too expensive mega-hub.IMO this was the better option.

I am a biased user when it comes to hard disks and use only Seagate manufactured units. Both the 4TB and the 7200 rpm 2TB, 3.5 versions have performed well. These two units was my first 3.5 purchase since the appearance of laptops, other purchased units were 2.5, replaceable for internal drive if needed. The price of the 3.5 4TB unit, for an external drive, was why I did not buy a more expensive 2.5 drive.Mind you I do miss the performance of the old 2.5 models with 4 GB of solid state cache; not seen in the catalog recently.

The drive developed a loud clicking noise about 8 months after the purchase. I sent a video of the problem to Seagate and based on that they determined that the drive was faulty and that it can go down any minute. They organized a replacement. They do not offer data recovery as part of the Warranty. It took me two days to back up the drive constantly praying that it does not crap out before I finish. Lucky me it did not. Now they will send me another one - refurbished most probably but the warranty does not restart. I purchased about 20 hard drives in the last 20 years this is the 2nd one that died on me. Coincidentally the other one was also a Seagate drive.
These are excellent robust drives IF you can get hold of them. Fortunately SCAN were able to supply them next day unlike another global company with the name of a river who couldn't deliver them after two weeks!Drives arrived next day extremely well packed! All four that were ordered passed a zero disk erase test. The drives write and read (on the whole) faster than their spec sheet says (around the 196MB/s mark on a USB-C 3.2 connected SATA caddy), more than fast enough for the requirement I have to store backups on them long term. Each runs very quiet (to my ears anyway) and the chassis says the drives run at around 29degrees C.SCAN were exceptional at getting these to me, it made a very stressful situation a little easier and the intended result was achieved ... The only knock is that these are SMR and not CMR drives. I foolishly found that out after setting them up in parity. The write speeds were abysmal at 1Mb to 30Mb and sometimes actually 0 speed. I then started over and set them up as a mirror for 30TB in the pool and 14TB useable storage, and then they were able to write ~110-150Mb. If they were CMR and performed well in parity, then I could have had 19TB useable. That's the only knock. I bought a 2TB internal Barracuda hard drive. I actually bought 2 of them. I wanted and needed the extra storage. Annnnnnd u guessed it! One of them just failed for no reason! There was no data on it! It just failed out of the blue! As you can tell... I am still upset about that one! I believe that I had another Barracuda just failed randomly, but I am more upset about the one that I remembered.2. Storage space!!!!!!! This one is the important one! I do not know your hard drive storage space needs, but you better buy at least twice what you need! I have already emailed Seagate about this issue. It is literally false advertising as you will never get the storage space that is advertised. Seagate's response? We do not control the way Microsoft's operating system interpret our storage space. Sooooo... If you buy a 4TB Seagate Baracuda hard drive, you might get between 3.5 to 3.8TB... That is an extreme might! I bought 2 Seagate EXMOS 18TB hard drives and I only get 16.3 TB of storage space. Yep! Lost almost 2 TB for each hard drive! This is a class action lawsuit waiting to happen.I said all of that to say.....If you are in the market for a hard drive then I do recommend a Seagate Barracuda or even the EXMOS.Yes, I am upset about not getting the amount of storage that I paid for, but it is likely that all the major hard drive brands are running this same scam of false advertising more space than what is actually available.As a consumer, it really is an easy fix.... Seagate could just put in the fine print that 'available space is less than advertised storage' or they could do the ethical thing and just manufacture the hard drive at 5.5TB and advertise their storage as the minimum storage space available. This way... When I am buying a 4TB hard drive, the consumer knows that they are getting at least 4TB.Advertising storage at one level and as the consumer we receive less than advertised is just bad ju-ju. I could not think of a professional term. lol....In either case.... it is not really a bad review as it is a recommendation to buy the hard drive, but understand that you will always receive less than the advertised storage so you better buy more than what you need.

When that happens you have to wait for the drive to write the overlapped data before it can process your next bit of data and the sustained transfer rate of the drive plummets due to jumping back and forth between the fast and the slow part of the disk. I will get sustained transfer rates under 20 MB / sec sometimes when transferring a large number of files. That's almost as bad as a USB 2.0 flash drive. The latest versions of Windows 10 and Windows 11 seem to do a lot of logging. They read and write event log and NTFS filesystem log data to the drive constantly. In Windows 11 my computer was reading over 1 MB/sec of data constantly so this drive keeps jumping around writing sector, read sector, rewriting sector to higher density area, reading sector and latency of all these small operations just crushes the performance of the drive. It takes the latest versions of Windows 10 or 11 a few minutes just to boot up and the disk operations just never end. Its constantly thrashing the drive every second of the day and since its always in the middle of some disk operation, the latency of any disk operation you want to perform is greater because it has to wait for its current operation to end first. Its very unpleasant and completely unacceptable both performance-wise and noise-wise and I'm sure the life of this drive will be shorter than a CMR drive due to the extra operations the drive is having to perform. The drive does hold a lot of data. If you don't use it as your Windows system drive which will be constantly reading and writing log files and you mostly read data from it and not write to it then its decent enough as an archival drive for movie, music, picture, or game storage. It has a lot of capacity and is cheaper than equivalently sized CMR drives. Writing performance of the drive is terrible, but reading is just as fast as other drives provided you haven't written a lot of data recently to the drive causing it to need to rewrite data possibly at the same moment you are wanting to read from it. You really need a SSD for your system drive in Windows 10 and 11 now due to the excessive reading and writing of small event log files. This drive isn't suitable for that purpose. SSDs don't have the seeking latency or noise production of magnetic drives so you won't notice that your SSD is operating all the time. You will regret it if you buy this drive and attempt to use it as your system drive in Windows 10 or 11. You've been warned.

Transfering anything even slightly large will require you to have to leave your PC idle because if you try to load anything up during the process your whole OS will freeze. Secondly and as I mentioned before, the amount that this drive has corrupted files (particularly OS files) in the 2 months I've owned it is astounding.So ultimately if you get this HDD you should also get real used to seeing "setting up automatic repair" a good chunk of the times you decide to restart your machine.But ...
