I recently tested the following light hiking boots head-to-head: REI Flash TT, La Sportiva TX Hike, Oboz Sypes, Oboz Katabatic, Salomon X-Ultra 4 (love Merrells, but their quality has declined and their prices have not.) The testing was indoors (to facilitate returns), but included flights of stairs, a slant board and squatting. All boots were initially tested with their own insole and then with a SuperFeet Hike insole.Pros: Good heel loop & mid-high tongue gusset for easy donning; Super ankle cushioning; Medium volume leads to slightly odd fit (this was rectified by the Superfeet insole); Construction looks & feels solid enough for Sierra graniteCons: Slight pinch point across instep (break in?); Lacing points slightly off for heel lock, but OK; Tongue flares ... MoreI recently tested the following light hiking boots head-to-head: REI Flash TT, La Sportiva TX Hike, Oboz Sypes, Oboz Katabatic, Salomon X-Ultra 4 (love Merrells, but their quality has declined and their prices have not.) I bought a pair of Salomon X Ultra 4 Mid GTX last year.Since then I've used the shoes once or twice per month for hiking. I've always taken care of them and used the official Salomon products for cleaning (NST Wash) and maintenance (NST Proof, so that the DWR (durable water repellent) of the gore-tex membrane could be restored) as recommended on their site.Recently during a hike my feet were soaking wet after a few minutes of walking through wet grass (it wasn't even raining), so that I had to walk the rest of the hike with my feet squishing inside my shoes.. Besides that, even though I wore the shoes only occasionally (once or twice per month for hikes, keep this in mind.. I am very disappointed with their lack of quality and durability. I contacted the seller, sent the pictures and he refused to change the shoes or give a refund. If you want to pay 180€ for a pair of shoes that start desintegrating after 1 year even though you wear it rarely, go ahead. I won't buy from Salomon ever again. The durability is a joke..

I was really excited when these first came out, upgrading from previous gen Salomon boots and shoes. Felt great out of the box and wrapped my (skinny) foot nicely after a very short break in period. The sole of the boot is very soft for a hiking boot as well as the tread which can be good for traction but you can feel the pressure of medium sized rocks. After about 4 months, walking on various surfaces the tread was worn flat on both balls of the foot (and no, I'm not shuffling my feet along the ground like a cross country skier). Because of how well they fit and felt for the first few months, I gave the boots another shot, chalking it up to a manufacturing issue with the early batches. The same thing happened in my second pair. I wore this pair a little longer and ... MoreI was really excited when these first came out, upgrading from previous gen Salomon boots and shoes. The same thing happened in my second pair. I wore this pair a little longer and it ended up giving me foot issues/pain due to lack of support. Fast forward about a year, I went to a different brand but was missing the fit of the Ultra 4's that I enjoyed, so I crossed my fingers, hoping Salomon figured the durability issue in the soles out. No luck. Another 4ish months and the tread and stability is shot. Again, I loved these boots for the first two months with the fit, how light they were, and the waterproofing was great for me too. They just didn't last. Looking forward to Salomon correcting this in the Ultra 5 Mids
I ordered a pair of these around a year ago from Zappos, and this April I noticed the goretex on the top of the toe started to rip a little. When I reached out to Zappos they said they would only accept returns within 6 months, and never for wear and tear. When I reached out to Salomon they told me they were going to review the case, and within 12 hours they sent me a voucher for a new pair. I don’t believe there was any obligation on their part to do so, but they stood by their product. The boots themselves have improved my hiking experiences immensely. The waterproofing is excellent, traction on slippery rocks and roots is fantastic, and the ankle support is second to none I’ve tried before. The waterproofing is excellent, traction on slippery rocks and roots is fantastic, and the ankle support is second to none I’ve tried before. I would expect all of that would make the boot heavy, but these are light and comfortable. I hike primarily in the woods, beaches, and mountains in NH, so grip and waterproofing are essential for me.Additionally, I have wide feet and these fit very well. There was a little bit of break-in period, maybe 2 walks around the neighborhood, but now I regularly wear them all day as they are my most comfortable pair of shoes.Hoping they will come out with more wide fitting models, because my experience with Salomon has been superb. 5 stars, will buy again when I wear these ones out.
I'll start with the cons, there really is only one so far and that is that the boot fits large. I am usually between a 12 and a 13 US so I got the 12.5. The boot is 1.5 - 2 sizes too big but with an insole it will be perfect. I will remember to buy an 11 from now on. The only other slight gripe is that they feel a bit too warm but that is likely down to the two pairs of socks I'm wearing until I buy the insole than the boot itself. They are really comfortable to wear out of the box except for a little stiffness hitting my ankle which all mid height boots do to me but even after minimal wear they are already softening up. As for returning them it's more laziness on my part than anything to do with the return policy. As for returning them it's more laziness on my part than anything to do with the return policy. Most other places have a 6-8 week turn over for a return which is truly unnaceptable for a large chain (MEC) selling online. Salomon's turn around of 7 days after receipt is awesome. However I would have preferred to see an exchange rather than a refund then having to rebuy. The weight of the boots is a little disconcerting as my brain is wired to weight being a mark of quality which is usually the case but I have to put that aside with this brand as the other two pairs I've owned lasted 2-3 years compared to others lasting no more than 1 year at most and usually 6 months or under. I beat footwear to death. I honestly can't figure out just how Salomon manages to consistently have footwear that lasts so long and other brands do not.
My last pair of Salomon's (X Ultra 3) were the best hiking boot I've ever owned. Lasted about 6 years and hundreds of miles of hiking before the sole started coming apart. After ample glue application they're still usable but no longer waterproof. So I finally decided to upgrade to the X Ultra 4, while ignoring all the reviews about design and manufacturing flaws, and what a mistake it was. Straight out of the box it's a great looking boot, super comfortable after a couple miles of breaking it in. However that's all I got out of my first pair. Less than a 2 mile lakefront hike, the back of my boot got snagged under a rock and the heel of the sole separated. Glue defect, OK no big deal maybe it was a dud. 40 minute drive to REI and I exchanged them for a brand new ... MoreMy last pair of Salomon's (X Ultra 3) were the best hiking boot I've ever owned. Glue defect, OK no big deal maybe it was a dud. 40 minute drive to REI and I exchanged them for a brand new pair no issues.Second pair lasted less than a month. Took them with me to the Adirondacks for a semi-strenuous 8.5 mile hike. It rained and the waterproofing failed (or so I thought). In reality the crease at the edge of the toebox had caused the stitching to snap in several places on BOTH shoes, and most of my hike was accompanied by the constant squelching of water being pushed out of the top of my boots. After I cleaned the boots I found 4 spots where the stitching had failed, and it looked to be fraying in many other spots. This may be a nice boot for the casual hiker, and I have to say they look great even with "normal" clothes on. Anyone looking for a durable reliable boot that you will really put through its paces should find something else unfortunately.HUGE shout out to REI by standing by their return/exchange policy! I'm trying a pair of Keen's now, hopefully I'll have better results.
These were my third pair of Salomon Shoes, unfortunately I made the mistake of claiming a warranty for a previous pair of faulty Salomon Shoes and found my self unable to get my money back. Salomon would only provide a credit note to spend on Salomon shoes. The first pair of shoes lasted just 3 months before the uppers started to allow water to leak in even when walking in wet grass. I had stupidly purchased a second pair of those as I had found them comfortable and at a good price. I then wore those and this pair of shoes over the next 3 months or so. The uppers on the 2nd pair started to let water in around the uppers and where they joined the footbed. I took them back to the retailer who refunded me the cost. It wasn’t the case with the pair I had been supplied with by Salomon, I had to jump through hoo-s to claim the warranty on them and was landed with yet another credit note to spend on more Salomon shoes. I have reluctantly purchased another pair of so called waterproof walking shoes. I hope these last longer than the first 3 pairs of shoes.I would not recommend Salomon waterproof walking shoes to anyone unless they only walk a few yards a day. I certainly would recommend them to serious hikers. The workmanship and manufacturing leaves a lot to be desired.
I wore these for my trip to Norway. Was super excited. I broke them in before the trip and on the way to Norway. They were super easy to break in and fit my feet great. At first they were tight and run slightly larger but I think that helps with not banging toes against the toe box unlike other people I went with who had bruising. First hike was Kjeragbolten, which was a challenging hike, especially in the cold and rain. Goretex held up, but somehow my left shoe seemed to have a leak somewhere because my right foot is completely dry. On our way down, against a sloped rock, my right foot slipped, but got caught at the last second. It would have been better and safer for me to just slip through to the next rock, but instead popped my ankle after my foot got stuck and ... MoreI wore these for my trip to Norway. It would have been better and safer for me to just slip through to the next rock, but instead popped my ankle after my foot got stuck and my full body weight landed on the ankle. There was an older woman who ended up passing me, but with no railing/chain support she gingerly walked down the same slope with full on grip during the rain/mist. Her husband did not have her same shoes and also slipped, but I was barely able to make it down the rest of the way and put pressure in my right ankle. To say I was disappointed is an understatement. I was not going to let the injury ruin my trip, and ended up doing Pulpit Rock and Trolltunga back to back. Still had the leaking issue in my left boot. Overall comfort was fine, but the hike down from Trolltunga I almost gave up but had some help.
Great price. REI had a special “price displays in cart” discount. I’ve seen it on a few products but so far this is the first one I’ve purchased. Left boot fit great. Felt comfy and sturdy. Put the right boot on and immediately felt a lump running through the middle of the heel cup. Figured maybe it was something that would quickly smash into shape. After all how would Salomon let a defected pair hit the market. Nope. Three minute walk around the house and I really started to feel the lump turn into a hard ridge in the middle of the heel cup. Pretty sad cause the left boot fit great with a nice smooth sole. Pretty sad cause the left boot fit great with a nice smooth sole. I believe it was a defect so I would only recommend this boot if you are willing to take the chance on getting a defective boot and dealing with returns. That being said I would only purchase this boot from REI due to their more than fair return policy. I liked how the left boot felt well enough to try another pair. The “price displays in cart” discount had gone away but shortly thereafter reappeared so I snagged another pair of X Ultras, Im a sucker for good deals, a half size bigger than the first pair with fingers crossed. Both in the wide version as Salomon’s run pretty narrow. And this is why I don’t gamble. Same exact lump in the same exact spot in the right boot though it was less pronounced. The left boot though did not fit perfect like the first pair. Seemed like there was a very slight flat spot in near the front of the heel cup that created a kind of angle in the same area as the lump in the right boots. Couldn’t tell if it would really bother me because I can’t get past the right boot due to previous experience so did not walk in them at all. Kind of makes me wonder why REI put the discount on this particular batch of boots as the next batch of X Ultras came into stock and there was no special discount while the batch of X Ultras I got was still listed for sale being sold at the discount. Things that make you go hmmmmm. I see a lot of great reviews and at least one boot fit great. I haven’t seen any other reviews with this particular issue so maybe it’s just my dumb luck and a very small amount of these boots being made with a defect. Happy hunting!
