- Lots of good apps available and they are updated regularly. The apps often have lots of options and configurability, but this can cause a steep learning curve. - I use their Hybrid Backup Sync app to backup my OneDrive every night, and QSync to keep a copy of all my files synchronized on each of my computers and the NAS. - I use their QVR Pro app to record my Reolink security cameras and it works well enough. You get 8 camera licenses included, while Synology only includes 2 licenses. - QVR Pro uses over 2GB of RAM on its own, and you'll probably be running other big apps, so upgrading the RAM is a must. I got an ADATA 8GB DDR4 SODIMM https://www.Home Essentials Direct.com/gp/product/B06WD4P6MT/ to go along with the original 2GB for a total of 10GB. - Note that ... More- Lots of good apps available and they are updated regularly. HDDs can peak at 180MB/s and SSDs at 500MB/s. But the TS-251D has a PCIe slot where you can install a faster network card. I got the QNAP QXG-10G1T 10GbE card for both my NAS and desktop computer. - My first unit actually had a faulty rear USB 3.0 port which fried a flash drive and an external drive bay. I had to pay to ship it back to QNAP, and they sent me a whole new unit. - Overall I'm happy with it. It gets a bit pricey once you add in the RAM, 10GbE Ethernet card and HDDs, but it's a very comprehensive and powerful storage device so I still think it's worth it.

Pros: Small and powerfull nas. Use mine with 32gb ddr4 ram from crucial. It is the 2666mhz 2x16gb, double side pcb. Makes a lot of difference. O wouldn't run it with less than 16gb of ram. It loves ram.Cons: only 2 bays

Pros: Hardware easy to use. Qnaps software once you get used to it.Cons: Software could be more joined up. After trying to use half a dozen apps I found myself uninstalling and using all qnaps own software to get going. As it happens have stuck with this set up as it all works well.

Pros: Does what it says on the tin and is expandable at a reasonable price. Software is goodCons: Software could be a bit more plug and play. THe example I use is understanding setting up the storage pool. Should be a bit more easy to understand and set up for the average person. Have had to do more reading and research than I would have liked
I bought this to replace a WD My Cloud EX2 Ultra as I needed something with more power and a greater range of apps. It was very straightforward to set up, as all NAS devices seem to be these days, and I have it acting as cloud storage for all the family, plus basic media serving on the home network. There are loads of things you can do with this device and I am building up my knowledge as I go with very good support from other users on the Qnap forum. I previously had a Synology DS119j which was horrible to use, but this was mainly down to a lack of processor power and RAM. This comes with a decent processor and 2GB Ram, which is fine for everyday tasks. This comes with a decent processor and 2GB Ram, which is fine for everyday tasks. I upgraded to 8GB RAM, also through EBay, and it now is happy doing quite heavy tasks (indexing, facial recognition, converting videos). If you are looking for an everyday NAS and you're not a networking expert, I'd highly recommend this great little NAS.
I have watched several YouTube videos in search of making the wisest NAS purchase in the $150-300 USD range. I was reading Home Essentials Direct reviews under the QNAP TS251D and was surprised at the number of (verified purchase) negative comments, especially when some comments date back to 2016 and the product was not released until Jan 2020. I am LEANING toward the TS251D at $309 USD but also considering the TD251+ at $299 USD and the Synology DS220+ ALSO at $299 USD. Although I have YET to make the buy I will rate the unit a 4 based on tech reviews and will UPDATE it should I have personal experience.
Pros: Easy to pull through the set-up and data from my old QNAP TS-209 Pro, as much as I want to, because the concepts haven't changed too much.QTS desktop seems pretty good. It is certainly an improvement over the old front end.The multimedia service via DLNA works well.Lots of software toys to play with.My 5 hour backup job now runs in half an hour. I thought it must be broken, but actually the gigabit ethernet connection just seems to work much faster than the old one.Cons: It is quite expensive, isn't it?
Dual-Core Celeron Processor, 2GB DDR4 2666GHz RAM, and 1 Ethernet port screams mediocrity for $250 that I paid for this. I recommend to upgrade to a TS-253D, which has a quad core processor, 4GB DDR4 and 2 Ethernet ports. You can buy additional 16GB of RAM for $40, making a big improvement in performance. Otherwise, this drags with Plex and QuMagie.
This is a awesome multi purpose NAS that has a PCIE slot. I'm currently using it as a NAS, multimedia player and download manager. At first I was kind of skeptical if it can run 4k HEVC 10 bit files but it had no issues at all. I have upgraded my NAS to 8GB of memory but there others that have reported 16GB works as well. I also added a 2.5 gigabit NIC. May be useful when running multiple VMs in the NAS. Highly recommend.
NAS is not for everyone but for those who do need it, there are only 2 companies that are at the top of the list and QNAP is one of them. All NAS products have some nuances but the reason I went with this model is because I had been using a QNAP product for last 8 years and never had any problems, this model has same compute, and is flexible in terms of expanding memory, adding other pcie devices, connect through hdmi directly, etc as compared to the other NAS in the same category. Overall I am happy with the purchase.
