Upon opening you'll first notice that PDP's Packing is superb, well thought-out, and practically bullet-proof. Nothing is left loose to rattle around during shipping, and every part and piece is well protected. The first step after unpacking was to inspect the top and bottom bearing edges of each drum. I'm happy to report that they are perfectly shaped and finished...every inch, top and bottom. No flea bites, no dropped edges, no flat spots, no delamination...just perfection. In my opinion bearing edges are one of the most important considerations when determining the quality of any kit, so again I'm pleased to report that PDP gets an A++ here. The next step was to check for out-of-round shells. The next step was to check for out-of-round shells. I was prepared to spot some small degree of variation, but all seven shells were spot on, top and bottom. The finish on this particular kit (clear natural) is nicely done and they didn't skimp on the lacquer...beautifuly clear and reflective. The lugs are solid, well designed, of good quality and should survive many years of consistent play. The tom suspension mounts on the kit are considerable, but maybe not quite as heavy-duty as what one finds on the big brother DW kits. More than adequate without a doubt, but not quite as beefy, and not as heavily chromed. Same minor short-coming concerning the hoops. Solid and well formed, but somewhat lacking mass and chrome. Having said that, this is a small price to pay for top-shelf quality everywhere else, and one needs to understand that in order to provide a kit of this quality at this price, some corners have to be cut. In my opinion PDP cut exactly the right ones. Setup is easy and efficient. The ball mounts are rock solid and hold as well as any I've used and even better than some. Tuning for each drum is pretty typical, and with the maple shells one can achieve pure tones in low, medium, and high tunings fairly easily. The rack toms are wonderfully musical and do absolutely sing, making it a real pleasure, even inspiring to incorporate them into ones playing. The floor toms deliver excellent attack coupled with ample sustain, and tune flex-ably enough to offer a full range of tones from tympani to bass drum-esque "thud" (dampening required). The snare has fairly typical attributes for a maple of it's dimensions. It can tune high and medium very well, but low is a bit tricky. Also, expect some ringing...again maple typical, but of course there are various ways from head choices to dampening gels that can be utilized to calm ringing and overtones. Spend some time with it and the snare will sound fantastic. The "Mag" snare throw-off is brilliant, built like a tank and the best design I've ever seen, period. It's fast, quiet, holds position, and is consistent in it's operation. The tension rods are a high-thread count, and so precise detailed tuning is far more easily achieved as compared to typical rods. This turns out to be a lot more useful than one might immediately think. The overall sound of the kit is very well balanced and each drum can easily tune to complement the others. If I were asked to choose a single word to describe the sound of this kit, I would honestly choose, "astounding". As far as sound goes...that is to say, coloring, timbre, attack, decay, sustain, body, etc, I think anyone would be hard-pressed to hear a difference between the PDP Concept Maple, and a comparable DW kit. Best I can tell, the only real differences are slightly less beefy hardware, one less ply in the shells, limited finishes, and them being cut and assembled overseas. My sincere opinion is that the PDP Concept Maple kit comes closer to true high-end, even boutique than anything else in it's price range. As compared to possible contemporaries such as Gretsch's Catalina Maple, Tama's Superstar Classic, etc, I think the PDP kit offers a bit more quality for the buck. One last note...when kit shopping it might be prudent to consider the quality of heads that come with the kit, and what it might cost to replace the full set if the stock heads are junk. The accompanying PDP branded heads are of a good quality whereas the heads that come on most production kits are more often than not worthless and need to be replaced straight away...something to think about. Bottom line - I would be very surprised to hear of anyone purchasing this kit and being disappointed in any way. Great quality and DW/PDP's second to none service, both in an affordable package...Bravo!

I purchased a set of DW Performance Series drums and after six months, got a severe case of buyer's remorse. They were a finish ply six piece set in Pewter metalflake, which looked great on stage, but I did not feel they produced an overall tonal palate and timbre that was so much better than the 5-yr. old Gretsch Catalina Maple set I traded in, especially considering the cost difference. Most of the PDP products were made in Mexico at the time I purchased the Gretsch kit, but China has all but dominated nearly every facet of the musical instrument industry, and I hoped that DW oversight and quality control would provide a level of insurance to getting a decent product at a reasonable price. I was right in my thoughts on this, but there are some upgrades/changes ... MoreI purchased a set of DW Performance Series drums and after six months, got a severe case of buyer's remorse. I was right in my thoughts on this, but there are some upgrades/changes that need to be made if you intend to do any serious gigging or recording work with these shells. First, save all the clear Remo batters that come with the kit as spare resonant heads. Get USA-made Remo Pinstripe batters or Controlled Sound batter heads for your toms, and maybe a Powerstroke for your bass. The snare deserves either an Emperor or Ambassador batter, again with the controlled sound spot. The three rack toms and the 14" floor tom all need decent 2.0-2.3mm flanged hoops with quality chrome plating, and this is for both the upper and lower rims. The snare that comes with the kit appears to have a 2.0mm set of rims, and this maple drum has absolutely tremendous crack, focus, and projection for a wood shell. Ditto for the 16" floor tom. I purchased both the heads and rims online, and got WorldMax hardware made in Taiwan that is both beautiful and very heavy duty. I also had to put nylon or plastic lock washers under each of the tuning rods on each drum, and on both heads, to maintain tuning stability. Think of this set as a "diamond in the rough," and after the aforementioned mods, a genuine diamond. You're going to need to plan for an additional couple hundred, but worth it.
I've played on quite a few drum sets, and this one takes the cake. It's very easy to tune, and the snare can sound fantastic with the right head on it. The design of the snare lever makes it effortless to engage.Dynamics! Dynamics! Dynamics! The floor toms, while being able to give a powerful low tone, are also able to be very gentle. And make no mistake, that tiny 8" tom can fill a room if tuned right.Overall, the dynamic depth is magnificent. With heavy hits and light brushes, the tone, attack, and volume are all within your control. It's perfect if you play multiple genres. You can go straight from playing Metallica, Cannibal Corpse, and Slipknot into smooth jazz and blues. The mounting system makes each of the toms easy to position, and with no metal bars ... MoreI've played on quite a few drum sets, and this one takes the cake. I bought it to hold me over until I could get something better, but I don't think I'll buy anything else!
I've been playing drums for 5 years and finally decided it was time to upgrade my kit from the Stagg Tim+. I use my drums for live performances, amateur recording, and just as a hobby at home. The first thing I noticed about the kit was the amazing lacquer when I unboxed the set. Assembling the kit was very easy with everything you need for mounting and tuning included.Tuning this set was such a joy for me. My old kit was awful, took forever, and when you were finished, it still had a hollow and overall bad sound to it. This kit was a whole different story. Even with the stock heads, tuning all 7 drums took less than a half hour and they have a nice deep sound to them. The mounting system is amazing for this kit as well. The other kits I looked at for the same price range at mounting systems that went through the tom bolts, which would mess with the tuning as you played them and make tearing down and assembling the kit a hassle every time. This set uses very sturdy hardware.Overall, I highly recommend this kit to anyone that doesn't want to drop a couple grand on a set. The amount of drums you get for the quality you receive is incredible. I'm very excited to continue my drumming on a set of this caliber.
Overall:I’ve been waiting over a year to post this review. I bought my kit from zZounds. 12 payments no interest is a winning combination for me. I bought the kit to be a touring, gig kit as I would be playing all through CA, Las Vegas and Laughlin, Phoenix and most of AZ. I purchased my kit March 2020. I got the kit and less than a week later every was shut down because of Covid-19. All my gigs for the year were cancelled. I was planning to use this with a funk music tribute band that plays music from the 60s -80s. I assembled the drums, tuned them, gave them a quick practice session at home low volume and in the cases they went. The country never opened for the rest of the year. I wanted to gig the set before I reviewed it. Fast Forward to July 2021 and I’m back ... MoreOverall:I’ve been waiting over a year to post this review. I was planning to use this with a funk music tribute band that plays music from the 60s -80s. I assembled the drums, tuned them, gave them a quick practice session at home low volume and in the cases they went. The country never opened for the rest of the year. I wanted to gig the set before I reviewed it. Fast Forward to July 2021 and I’m back to my first gig of the year. I’m playing in an 80s rock band with some curveballs into new wave and some other dance hits of the era. I brought the kit to the gig and set it up, tuned it up and the band played the first song and bam, they all snapped their heads and looked back at me. (I had been using a very crappy backline set at the rehearsal studio). After the first song it was on. The drums sounded incredible. They sound like I spent much more on them than the price tag of $999 US. The kick drum had all the punch and bottom end. Wasn’t too plastic sounding. Had a rich deep tone but still would have the snappy response I needed. The toms, incredible. They sounded very similar to a DW kit which blew me away even. They don’t choke out, the have great sustain, stayed in tune all night (which was a surprise because it was an outdoor gig that started using afternoon heat and went into the night time) they had nice rich tone, very responsive, projection was excellent and they cut very well. No choking out on any of the drums. Floor toms were not hard for me to tune and I got them where I wanted them and where the shell sounded best and I can tell you they sounded fat, warm, rich and punchy. No issues with them going out of tune. I got the last Blue Lacquer kit zZounds had. The finish is impressive. Flawless. No scratches, no inconsiderate on the finish and it sparkles great under the lights. I checked all bearing edges and they were all smooth, properly cut with no flat spots and no low spots or uneven spots on them. Every single drum on the kit looked gorgeous and sounded better than they looked. Tom mounting hardware is the only shortcoming as they do not offer a single Tom option to match the PDP line that I could use in my rack. The only single Tom mount is designed to be cymbal stand mounted. I run racks on all my kits. The time mounts provided hold well and are solidly built and finished nicely in chrome. Overall the kit blew me away. It is very much a DW product and DWs DNA is all over this PDP offering. European Maple is not the same as North American maple but no one in the crowd will notice. Easy to dial in with the PA and EQ. The drums performed flawlessly. They looked like a kit that easily cost 2-3 times as much money. If you want a solid kit with some pro features at a bargain price, the PDP Concept Maple is hard to beat. The value packed into this kit and the quality of the drums and the tonal richness makes this an excellent buy for entry level players, mid level players and professionals. There’s no shame in playing this kit. It delivers better than a lot of other brands top of the line pro level kits. This is also an excellent choice as a gigging kit for pros that don’t want to haul around their Collectors series DWs and damage them, and I would not hesitate to use these on tour as well. If you are a fan of DW products, need a kit that won’t empty your wallet, looks impressive and sounds impressive, these are an excellent choice. I cannot think of one downside to these drums except maybe a little bit of lack of versatility with the snare. But even with the included snare you can change heads and tune to your needs and still be in decent shape. Good luck and keep it in the pocket.
Having been a drummer for over 40 years, I've played many kits over the years. Favorites were vintage Slingerland and Rogers kits. For the last 15 years I have been playing exclusively on Roland Vdrums. desperately missing the expressiveness of an acoustic kit, I began my search for a new kit. After months of research I decided to give DW's PDP concept maple series a try. I purchased the 7pcs silver to black sparkle fade (my wife and children's choice), as recommended I replaced the batter heads with some Evans G2 coated, an EMAD head on the bass and and Evans HD Dry on the snare! the kit sounds amazing. the drums tuned beautifully. Overall:I simply cannot express enough just how much I love these drums. This set is an upgrade from a pretty decent $700 name brand 5 piece set. I read a ton of online reviews and watched all of the youtube videos of this set I could find. It quickly became apparent, that I wasn't finding anyone who did not like them. I knew that if DW was willing to put their name on every one of these drums, they were not going to be a disappointment. I was absolutely right. While putting everything together, I was amazed over and over and over. If it wasn't sitting in my living room right this moment, I would not believe it possible to get this quality of drums for anywhere near their price. I ordered the Natural finish and they are stunningly beautiful. Everyone who sees them ... MoreOverall:I simply cannot express enough just how much I love these drums. I have no doubt that they will last for many years. I am so thankful that DW made the decision to make this set possible and at such an affordable price. It's nice to dream of a big set of DWs, but nicer still to be able to play a great set that I can actually afford. It's a nice touch when working drummers I have known for decades, are amazed at my drums!! I always have to show them the set online because they do not believe me when I tell them they were less than a grand.
Overall:Shipping was on time, the kit was packaged nicely, setting up took 45 mins, which was fun.The kit looks beautiful, I got the transparent walnut, and it's just classic. The hardware looks great and reliable. I've been playing since 92 and have had my fair share of playing on different kits, pearl, tama, and the list goes on.. this kit plays wonderfully and sounds even better. It's a warm quick punch with the proper amount of resonance lingering afterwards.. tuning is fairly broad, can go high and believe me when I say it got some serious lows..mind you though, I immediately put remo pinstripe clear heads for the batters so I have no idea how stock heads sound. I've read some people stating they didn't like the snare.. personally, I friggin love it. Has a nice crack/pop with a ring to it.. I Did however muffle the resonant head on snare with a little tissue and tape.. it helped take away that long ring which more sounds amazing. I am personally very very happy with the kit, and anyone interested in it will not be disappointed.
