This is a very simple and versatile lens (its design reminds me of a pinhole camera) but because of that it is great for close ups (eg flowers, insects) providing the subject isn't moving too much and you must take into account that it needs enough light but has an aperture no wider than f3.5. Also you can take general pictures too of people, even landscapes. It isn't a zoom but that's not problem. I have many other Zuiko lenses I can turn to if needed..... It seems sharp and provides very good results on an Olympus e-620 camera which has a 12.3mp sensor. In 2017 I paid just over 50 for my Zuiko 35mm f3.5 (it had been very lightly used, like new basically). Well worth it at that price. In my view, I use the last of the 'proper' Olympus Digital SLRs with mirror technology, an e-620 12.3mp sensor. I am not interested in the latest all digital mirror-less systems, It is not the same photographer experience. I used to use the OM film cameras some years ago.I still have some OM1, 2 and 10 bodies...... which probably explains my reasoning.

Excellent value for money as I bought this as an used lens. Was very impressed with the condition of the lens and could not tell that it had been used. Being a prime lens it has a 'fixed' view with the lens moving in and out to provide the auto focus function. The only one downside is that it can be a bit noisy, but it is fairly quick to focus in good to medium light conditions. In low light conditions it does struggle to auto focus but this can be easily overcome by manually focussing on your subject. Excellent sharpness and clarity of image with no distortion or vignetting at the edges. Amazing depth of images with those dreamy like portraits with blurred backgrounds and bokeh. Easily rivals a pro lens, would recommend this as an essential in your kit, useful as your everyday lens, light and small so that it reduces the size of your camera making it much less cumbersome to carry around on holiday.

When I bought my Olympus E-M 10 Mark III, I got the 12-42mm lens and the 75-300mm lens. What I found, though, was there was a whole lot of area missing for my shots between the 42 and 75. And of course, mirrorless means it's the 84-150 range. Anyway, this 12-200mm lens means I don't miss that area, and I don't have to change lenses so much. That's great. As I read in other review before ordering, there is an area that's kind of sticky when you're zooming. Mine starts at about 70 and is sluggish from there to the 200 point. But, if I know it ahead, it's really no big deal. This lens is fairly heavy for me, but I'm one who keeps my left hand under the weight of the camera as I walk around - even when it's the 12-42. When I turn it around, I can still use my existing camera bag, even with this new lens attached, and the hood turned around. That too, is a big positive!

The Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-200mm f/3.5-6.3 Lens has quickly become my favorite lens. Is is perfect for all occasions? No, of course not, but it is extremely versatile. The 24-400mm equivalent focal length lets me go from wide angle to a very close up zoom in a small package. This has become my everyday lens. It stays on my OM-D E-M5 Mark III 99% of the time. This lens has gone around my yard, neighborhood, town, and a few minor league baseball games with me. It never fails to deliver.
I rated this five stars because it is a very good lens for the price, not because it is the best possible lens. I believe it is designed to give the average (or even advanced) photographer a lens with a long zoom range and pretty good speed at a reasonable price. It is also rather light weight and, when not extended, reasonably compact. They market it for "travel" where you put this on your camera and your good for anything from 12 to 200 mm (24 to 400 mm 35mm equivalent). Of course, that range is enough for just about anything. And you don't have to change lenses or carry multiple lenses with you. It doesn't have image stabilization in the lens which is probably a concession to help keep the price reasonable. And you don't have to change lenses or carry multiple lenses with you. It doesn't have image stabilization in the lens which is probably a concession to help keep the price reasonable. The zoom operation is quite non-linear at the telephoto end. You turn the zoom barrel and it smoothly goes from wide angle up to about 100 mm but that last movement to 200 mm is only a short further rotation of the zoom barrel. I think this is on purpose. I believe it is so that the majority of the range the lens is likely to be used has a very smooth zoom feel. And for the few times you may want the more extreme telephoto, you just put up with the more coarse feel. It is a tradeoff, and I think a reasonable one. This lens has pretty much what you really need, and not what you don't need. So it is more affordable than, for example, their 12 to 100 mm pro lens.
I would have given this item 5 stars save for one small flaw. When extending the lens to its maximum (200mm), there is a spot in its travel where it seems to go over a slight BUMP. This is disappointing as the rest of the lenses travel is smooth from wide to full zoom. This problem is small, and since I do very little video should not get in the way of the still photography I normally do. It is a rather compact lens for it's range, very sharp, well made..., and weather resistant to boot. Olympus, as usual, gives a lot of value for the money. It is an excellent lens and will spend a lot of time on one of my cameras, especially while traveling.
I took this lens with me on a recent Alaska cruise. Although I own an EP5, I wanted a weather-sealed kit for this trip. And I was concerned that the small (or non-existent) grip on the EP5 would make a lens of this size unwieldy. Fortunately my brother lent me his M1 body which is both weather-sealed and has a nice pro-style grip. For this type of use -- a vacation where weather may be an issue and the need to limit the amount of gear to carry -- you cannot beat this lens. It's very, very good throughout its range, although at any given focal length I can point to a m43 pro zoom or fixed lens that will be sharper/faster/better (and heavier/more expensive). But if you need just one lens to rule them all -- this one is about as good as it gets. The build quality is very good -- it feels like one of the pro-line lenses. But it's lighter because there is more plastic used in the barrel. The only negative thing I can say -- and this is mentioned in some of the online reviews -- is that the zoom action is very non-linear. The lens zooms smoothly from 12-120 and then goes from 120-200 in a hurry. So it's a bit tricky to get the zoom just right at the long end, but not so much that you don't get used to it.
I own the Olympus 14-150mm and was excited at the prospect of migrating to the 12-200mm for a somewhat faster lens and broader field and depth of view. Man was I disappointed. And didnt make the intended purchase. I tried two different lense (to ensure it wasnt just a fluke with a single lens) and had the same, negative, experience with both. About 2/3 of the way through the zoom length the lens sticks and requires a mighty twist to make it through to the full long zoomed length. I wouldnt like that in any case (especially for an expensive lens), but I do a fair amount of street and photojournalism photography and I could miss vital fleeting moments while grappling to get past that sticking point in the zoom lens. The lens needs a re-design. I had a Tamron walkaround lens that developed the same design flaw years ago. Tamron had to re-design for the 2nd gen of that lens. This Oly lens needs that same type of fix and should do sooner rather than later if theyd like us to buy these lenses. The range is great. The tech functionality is no good.
The 12-200mm is a fine do-everything lens. I have had it on an OM-D E-M1 mark II for a couple of weeks for daylight outdoor photography. I haven’t seen any obvious flaws in edge-to-edge image quality at any focal length. I have also been impressed with its usefulness for close-up photography of flowers and insects. Note that it’s not terribly compact. It is nearly as heavy as the 12-100 f4 Pro lens, and when fully zoomed to 200 mm the barrel extends even farther from the camera body than that of the 12-100 Pro. The feel in the hand of the zoom action is a bit annoying. The rotation is not as smooth as either my 12-100 Pro or my 14-150mm, and there’s a sudden increase in resistance as one zooms toward 200 mm. The feel in the hand of the zoom action is a bit annoying. The rotation is not as smooth as either my 12-100 Pro or my 14-150mm, and there’s a sudden increase in resistance as one zooms toward 200 mm. This inconsistency in rotational resistance across the zoom range was present, to a somewhat varying degree, in two samples of the lens that I tried. Over time I got used to this, and it has not interfered with shooting. There are trade-offs with other lenses in the Olympus line, although one can see a clear niche for this lens. The 14-150mm f4-5.6 II is significantly smaller and lighter, and it also offers very good image quality. It is a better match for OM-10 bodies, and at half the cost is well worth considering as an alternative to the 12-200. I find the 12-100 f4 Pro to be more comfortable to use, with its slightly greater diameter and smoother zoom action. It also offers additional in-lens image stabilization and a useful on-lens function button. The constant f4 can be very nice in lower light or for somewhat greater background blur, but one is trading off 200 mm full-frame equivalency against 400 mm, which is significant. The 40-150 mm f2.8 Pro is a beautiful lens with internal zoom action and excellent image quality for a zoom lens, and It also works with the Olympus 1.4X telextender, but it pushes micro four-thirds photography into different territory. Its size and weight detract significantly from the compactness associated with the format, and one must carry additional lenses to achieve wide-angle to normal views. I generally use the 40-150 Pro only when I am going into a situation where I know I only need telephoto, and the size and weight aren’t going to kill me. Overall, if one is starting out with an EM-1 mark II body, there’s a good case to be made to just buy this one lens, put it on the camera, and wait to be convinced that one ever needs anything else. The first addition would likely be the 60 mm f2.8 macro lens rather than another zoom lens.
The Olympus 12-200mm has a great focal range, but I found myself not using the 100-200 part of the range much. The purchase price and weight of the lens are ideal. The autofocus motors are quiet and responsive, even when paired with a GH5. I missed the focus clutch of the 12-100, though. For me, I found dealing with the variable aperture of the 12-200 annoying for wedding videography. I prefer the Olympus 12-100 for outdoors and when it is light enough inside (I light when possible). I switch to fast primes for darker conditions.
