I hadn't played a Paper Mario game in a long time. I hadn't heard anything good about the last few games and I hated they messed with the RPG formula that made the first two instant classics. When I saw this game previewed, I felt compelled to give this one a shot for some reason and overall I'm glad I did. Yes, the battling is not near as enjoyable as the original style, but I did find fulfillment in the puzzle aspect. Puzzles are always rewarding when you solve them, right? What can't be understated is how engrossing the story was. It was the reason I kept coming back. Not quite The Thousand Year Door story, but it works very well. I definitely recommend this game as long as you feel you can look past and embrace the puzzle battle system. It really isn't that bad.

I was never really a fan of playing games until I got my Nintendo Switch about two years ago. I have bought several games where I can just relax and not think about what I need to do to "win". Not so long ago, I started playing Super Mario Deluxe and it was so fun that I decided to buy another Mario game. I decided to buy Paper Mario because of the videos that I have watched. I made the right decision in getting this game because it is so fun and very addicting. There are many mini-games within the game where you can defeat a lot of enemies and earn coins and health points. My strongest criticism, and it could be bias since i grew up in the 90s playing rpgs as well as the first couple paper marios, is the battling set up, which is bascially half the game, is nearly pointless. You do not gain any experience points or level up your character when you win battles which makes it feel so pointless playing the game. Im not sure if they did this to cater toward little kids or something because whether you fight one enemy or one million, youre the SAME exact "level". Some people might not care but im constantly asking myself "why am I wasting my time with this game?". Thats honestly my only complaint but its a big one since its half the game like i said. I love Mario games, been playing them since I was a kid, but this game has issues. I love the story, and I love the characters, Olivia is awesome.But, and a huge BUT, the combat system is repetitive and boring, makes me want to rage quit. Also a lot of filler that is not needed. Like the game show, it's fine as a side quest, but not apart of the main story.But yeah, the combat system get boring fast, real fast. You can't even flee half the time, you are stuck in it and you die. Not worth your money, it gets frustrating.

The whole map is filled with "not so bottomless holes" which you have to throw confetti on until they are sealed. (if it's in the ground and still a hole, you can fall in and suffer damage.) Filling a hole earns you some coins. You can only hold so much confetti. you get confetti from hitting trees, bushes etc with your hammer, or by beating your enemies in battles. But the only other real reward for battles is coins. On to the battles and bosses. So as someone said first, your attacks mostly just consist of pressing A. You fight solo, so all you pick is a weapon (different varieties of boots or hammers) or an item (very little variety). The whole battle layout is annoying especially for bosses who can make it almost impossible for you to attack them, or even increase their own HP if you can't solve the maze fast enough on your turn. the boss battles will just drag on and on forever, both parties able to increase HP anytime, I eventually just turn the game off mid battle because it is just pointless, frustrating and unrewarding. There is no level up system in this game when you beat a boss. instead your "confetti capacity" increases. So you can cover up more holes with confetti and collect more coins. Besides more boots, hammers or limited items, there's not much to buy. this makes the coins a very weak incentive. I recently purchased this game and it's been a time suck, as I expected (again, I played the 64 version multiple times- I know the game is long) but the actual game has only been enjoyable a very small percentage of the time. Much of the game is just absolute nonsense and frustration. There is always a pointless, boring battle. Finding a treasure chest is no longer exciting because they only contain "collectible" items that serve no purpose. Some chapters' riddles are so ridiculously hard that I, an adult, resorted to using game cheats on occasion, a last resort just to move on in the game. I don't understand how a child is supposed to get through this game without cheating. Overall, very very disappointed with this game. End rant.

Special items in this game end up having little value and with an abundance of coins, you'll easily be able to buy whatever special items you need. Still, the game drags on and feels monotonous at times. Each boss battle is just a matter of, again, how you arrange the board and special spaces. There are parts of the game that never feel fully realized or thought out. After you beat the game, you're hoping there's more to do or an added adventure–but there isn't. The credits roll and the game resets itself to the scene right before you go into the final battle. Unlike other RPG Mario games, your team is sparse this go around. There's no Luigi to join your team (he's in the game and makes appearances), no Princess, no Toad, Yoshi or special characters like Geno and Mallow–it's just you and Olivia for most of the game with brief stents of short-run characters with little to no personality.Overall, fun, a great way to past the time but the format of the game–having to battle bosses and bad guys through re-arranging the board–makes the game feel dull and flat. Also, the lack of playable content after you beat the game, unlike Mario Rabbids for the Switch, feels like a missed opportunity as well. It would be nice to have a DLC come out to extend the life of the game but it doesn't seem likely. With the puzzles and all the reading required to get through the game, I don't think young kids would enjoy this but teens on up will enjoy it.

The locations vary in type with a few standouts, and the music can be catchy at times.One pet peeve I've had with the game is that some repetitive things (like Olivia's Vellumental transformations) can be skipped, but other things that really need to be can't. The Eddy River stage (which takes several minutes to complete and MUST be finished all at once, and there is no way to back out once you've started) can be especially difficult if you're trying to collect all the coins for a "special prize"; fail and it's "Game Over" and a host of screens, animations, and a LOOONNG, unskippable monologue from the boat pilot as you begin the stage. It's not failing and having to repeat a challenge so much as the unnecessary steps and time required to get back into the action and try again, and when that's exacerbated by a challenge that's literally minutes long, you can hit "rage quit" territory in a hurry. Unfortunately this isn't the only instance in the game where you'll be subjected to such conditions.A word of warning unless Nintendo patches the issue: when you get the VIP Pass to enter the Spring of Rainbows toward the latter part of the game (20-plus hours in), DO NOT turn around and exit until you've completed the area. The guard won't let you back in and, without any known way to reacquire the Pass, it renders you unable to finish the game. Even so, there's a LONG (10 minutes-plus) "Win or Game Over" challenge at the end of the area, and be warned: it can be VERY difficult because its mechanics come completely out of left field from what you've become accustomed to throughout the rest of the game up to that point.I've enjoyed Paper Mario: The Origami King overall, but I honestly wouldn't rate it nearly among the best of the Switch's first-party offerings.
