Although I lose autofocus with my 200-500, I still find it useful in specific applications. Bought this for the upcomming eagle watching season on the Mississippi. But when I tried it out on my DX body in my backyard, I realized it gives me macro capabilities from 7 feet away, and I could use my flash to compensate for the loss in fstop. I owned Tamron 70-200mm DI VC USD lens (Made in Japan). I was searching capable 2x teleconverter for extension. People saying that TC-20E III is not convertible with third party lenses. With a little modification, I can able to use TC-20E III with my Tamron lens. The results are unbelievable. The images are very sharp and cannot even tell the different without pixel peaking. My lens now becomes fully capable 140-400mm telephoto lens.Nikon should made their converter to be able to use with third party lenses from day one. By the way, I just want to share my experience. If you need 2x teleconverter TC-20E III is the one to go. I definitely recommend the product.

Try using one or more of: a stable tripod, a gimbal head, fast shutter and mirror lockup mode and see the difference. I shoot landscapes and I'm almost always using MUP mode. This extra reach helps me to get tighter compositions without cropping away, that are printable. However, if you shoot wildlife, then mirror lockup isn't an option.Overall, if you want the extra reach (double the focal length) without having to lug around a separate lens, then this is a fantastic addition. It's a compromise compared to a dedicated lens made for these focal lengths, but a very acceptable one.

I do photo as long as I remember myself. I started at age 6, using my father's Leica Film camera. I can say about this teleconverter - IT IS SUPERB. Especially for my Nikon Nikkor 400mm F/2.8 VRII Lens. Nice combo. Why to buy 500mm f/4.0 or 600mm f/4.0 If I have identical quality with 400mm f/2.8? 800mm F/5.6 by tiny margin better than 400mm with x2 teleconverter. You will notice it only, if U will do "pixel peeping" and count every pixel. For any commercial work or for hobby, it is not noticable. Sometimes I can't tell which photo was made by my 400mm with x2 ex-teleconverter, and which with 800mm lens. Only EXIF data helps :-)
I have gone from shooting landscapes to photographing ducks. As is the case with bird photography you always want to get closer, and there is never enough lens. The teleconverter is my compromise to get closer. It is much sharper than what I was expecting and things appear to be clear rather than the haze you can get when photographing things from a distance. I did my due diligence in reading the specifications before buying the lens. The teleconverter is compatible with the lens I got, but there was a footnote that warned about troubles with the auto-focus. The lens I have, and the converter do not always work well together, but in manual mode the two work very well together. I am very happy.

This appears to be because the Camera/Lens/Teleconverter combination will not autofocus at the higher levels. It does, however, manual focus at these levels. I have tested the autofocus capability between 80-200MM (160-400MM) and the focus is sharp. I suspect that the autofocus stops at the point where the lens converts from 4.5 to 5.6, but have not confirmed this. The manual focus is also sharp. I live in Colorado and primarily shoot wildlife, Elk, Moose, Mountain Sheep, etc, and Landscapes. Accordingly, the camera is often mounted on a tripod so manual focusing is not a problem. This is a great teleconverter for all AFS lenses but will not work with non AFS. I purchased this with the intention of using it with a 70-300D lens to avoid packing my much larger telephotos on a trip. To my suprise it would not accept an F mount D lens. It worked great with my AFS lenses so I decided to keep it and purchased a Kenko converter for the D. It's a shame Nikon quit making teleconverters for D & G lenses. I have an older Nikon 2X converter for non AF F mounts but getting that to work with an AF lens was a nightmare. In the end I'm glad I bought it. Perhaps in the description B&H should note it's incompatibility with non AFS lenses.
Works as described. Sharpness is only barely affected but nothing to keep me from using it. I really only noticed the sharpness decrease when shooting black text on white paper-as a test. I didn't notice a decrease in sharpness while shooting organic objects. F/11 is a bit of a bummer but as long as you know your limits then you'll be happy. Certainly worth it to get to 1000mm on FX. Modern ISO capabilities counter act the loss of light from the f/11 aperture so it's not a huge loss.
I bought another brand teleconverter and wasn't very pleased with it.So, I bought this one. Tack-sharp images with my F-mount lenses. Now that I have both Nikon DSLRs and Z cameras, I use this with the FTZ and my F-mount lenses, with great results.
my favorite lenses are wide angle, to drop out background i use my 70-200mm/VR/f2.8 nikon lens. to have that lens 'go longer' i decided to buy the teleconverter TC-20E III. i tested the lens in various situation, even handheld - i am impressed how well it works. the quality of the images i tested at f5.6, 8 and 11 is very good. the extender looses 2 stops, but that is to be expected. it's a perfect and cost-effective addition to my camera bag. if one shoots a lot of long lens photos, a dedicated 400mmm is probably better, but for occasional long lens shots it's perfect. i am totally satisfied.
