I have used Visio since its early days, before Microsoft bought it. More recently, I have used Visio Professional for flowcharts and diagrams. It has a bit of a learning curve, but is very powerful when you learn its capabilities. I like that there are many different templates available, and that you can create and save your own templates to reuse over and over. Visio also offers an online app that integrates with Office 365. Both Visio Professional and the Office 365 version allow collaboration with team members.

I like the stencils that allow you to create a business document for just about any business system or process. There are some very nice integration capabilities that are helpful in cutting down maintenance. I really like the org chart tool that uses the Outlook/Exchange directory to build organizational charts. You just pick someone and the levels you want to include and then the chart is created. I have the PRO version, which also allows you to link diagrams to Excel data files. I used this to update system diagrams with a table of data about the server, such as domain, name, function, etc. and avoid updating all of the detail in the diagram. I also like that I can set my page size to anything I need for large diagrams and plotter size paper.

I find that Visio is much easier to use than PowerPoint when I'm creating organizational charts. When charts are small then PowerPoint is a fine option, but larger more complex charts are so much easier to complete in Visio. I like how I can have one set of direct reports organized one way and the next set of direct reports organized another way. I can also make boxes smaller or font smaller easily, if I need to fit more on a page. I have also used the program to create flow charts and like all the shape and flow options available.

I have been using this application for several years as a tool to design the various structures or diagrams of the telecommunications network and the Internet required by the multiple projects completed and currently underway in the Corporation. I love the variety of elements in their libraries or Visio stencils that are usually extensive and you only need to drag every element or master shape to the drawing and assemble the interconnection network required as a technical solution. It is very easy to implement and manage. It allows me to save a compendium of previous solutions that serve as the basis for new solutions.
Visio has helped me organize complex thought diagrams, process, and project initatives with multiple stakeholders / phases / responsibilities / etc. It's a great tool to help break down and visualize aspects of your project. I often times will map out the diagram on paper while organizing data points via excel. Then I use these points as an outline to translate into a Visio diagram. The many different types of shapes and lines also help visualize your project into easily digestible bits. It helps that you can use multiple levels of interepretation within the tool (graphically, chart-wise, etc.) and put them all into a single framework.
It can draw anything you cane think of - There are many pre-defined symbols that can be dragged and dropped into a drawing - Pre-defined symbols can be easily incorporated into your drawing with connectors that snap to connection points and can then be dragged to other parts of the drawing. Visio is integrated with other Office suite products which is nice. It is user-friendly. It doesn't take long to figure out how to get up and running while also providing advanced users options to add the bells and whistles they want. The variety of standard templates is large and there are lots more custom templates you can download too.
I liked that you were able to easily customize the flows that you make by utilizing different shapes and arrows. This made it clearer to see what you were trying to get across. Additionally, I liked that the different flowchart shapes were labelled with additional custom shapes for making a flow as unique as you need it to be, if you are already familiar with designing powerpoint diagrams, the concept is similar, except with Visio, it is much more effortless to align objects, and the software will automatically expand your figure onto another page if necessary.
It has an intuitive design with tools in well known locations. It's easy to use without too much training. It's not a resource hog and doesn't slow down your computer. It makes flowcharting easy and fun without seeming like a chore to use. Many flowchart shapes and tools are at your disposal and thus a powerful program for experts and novices.
