The entire Meta Portal family is video calling designed to bring people closer. Simple to set up and fun to use, Portal is a smart video calling device for a closer connection to friends and family—wherever they are. Whether you’re having meaningful conversations or getting help with a recipe, it’s easy to make smart video calls to anyone via Messenger, Whatsapp, Zoom and more–even if they don’t have a Portal. And once you’ve connected, Smart Camera pans and zooms to keep you in frame so you can move and talk naturally, while Smart Sound minimizes background noise and enhances your voice. Working from home becomes easier as you free up your laptop with a dedicated calling screen for conference calls and screen sharing via Microsoft Teams, Webex, Zoom and Workplace. An expanding AR library lets you blur backgrounds or add effects to liven up calls, while StoryTime uses AR, animation and music to let you tell immersive bedtime stories to loved ones anywhere in the world. And when your calling is done, Portal’s picture perfect frame will display your favorite photos from Instagram, Facebook or uploaded from your phone via the Portal app. With Alexa Built-in, you can control your smart home and connected devices with the sound of your voice. Explore with Portal’s browser and, with additional account activations, enjoy music with Pandora and Spotify or content via Facebook Watch and more—all with room-filling sound. Portal’s simple privacy settings mean you can easily disable the camera and microphone, or block the lens with the camera cover. All Messenger and WhatsApp calls are encrypted.

Ease of use is the only thing holding this back from being a complete 5 star device.- Plugging in (Downward shaped plug forces bottom plug.) FB should reduce the power requirement here.- Connecting to the Internet. Basic find signal and enter password.- Update. A whopping 15 minutes.- Logging in. This needs a simple registration form so Grand Parents can get in easier.- My wife's FB account took at least 5-10 minutes before contacts fully loaded.Overall once in, and the Portal I found somewhat institutive. The software is fine (although glitchy) and they are constantly updating it (which is good and makes sense because it’s still a new-ish product). But the actual hardware, the portal itself is awful. I’m genuinely curious if the designers ever used a webcam before making this. You can’t tilt it and it falls over so easily. Regardless if I’m in the kitchen or (99% of the time) on a couch I have to prop it up to angle down and so it won’t fall over (which it falls over very easily). When my family uses it, kids are running around and again, you can’t swivel it easy enough. Sure, the camera does have a very wide angle and it’s impressive at how wide you can see things but, it doesn’t mean the people you’re talking to can see you. But, it’s VRRY glitchy and the hardware itself blows.

Keeping Family Close

Even without a pandemic, families are so scattered around the world these days. It is so nice to be able to talk to family during the holidays, and just any time we want to see someone. It really helps for my niece (3) to see us at least once a week. She doesn’t have to go through as much of a adjustment phase when she comes to visit. We aren’t strangers, or simply a familiar voice. We are auntie and grandma. Sure, we could accomplish this with any number of video chat services, but none have the amazing clarity and resolution from Portal to Portal. Marginal, at best. Portal performs like a very confused person with substandard hearing.
22 March 2023

I have no idea how Portal gets such strong reviews. It’s AI is severely lacking. Misses commands from five feet away, then picks up conversations from two rooms away and assumes they are random commands. Drastically misunderstands commands and launches random things constantly. Portal is as frustrating as using spellcheck. I received it as a gift, and still feel like I paid too much! Now, several of its features have. Been handed over to Alexa, so I have to remember what to ask Portal to do vs, what to ask Alexa to do. I do notice that the Alexa commands work much better, even though it’s the same device performing the tasks. Odd.

Portal saved a Life

Upon answering his phone call, my mother quickly knew something was off and thought he might of had a stroke. From there we were able to alert local family members and called 911. He spent the better part of the week in the ICU and hospital recovering what had happened and returned home thereafter. We had gotten the portal for him as a gift when it first came out as a means to feel virtually closer to distant family (as the commercial suggests - which he has done multiple times a week), but in this instant, if it had not been for the portal, he may not be with us today. The technology of this device gave him a means of communication when others failed. It has done wonders - thank you so much.

Portal with the elderly

Portals have very high-quality hardware; I have the portal+ and the Portal standard. I bought them to communicate with my senior parents during the pandemics and in general, the quality of the video calls is good. The problem is the complexity of the setup, you need to have a Facebook account, and elderly people may not always have an account or the skills to create one. Elderly people must understand certain concepts that not always are intuitive for someone outside the tech circle like connecting to WIFI.The second problem is that if you want to have video calls with other people, all of them must use or have Facebook/WhatsApp accounts, forget communicating with other platforms, this seriously limits your social circle. This equipment should be thought to be ... MorePortals have very high-quality hardware; I have the portal+ and the Portal standard. Good Points: Saved me through lockdown as I’m on my own so bought to see my family for a more reality feel and the feel of sharing their family time which a phone didn’t. I also don’t look awful like i do on my phone FaceTime. The portal has given me more confidence in moving up to FaceTiming friends now. It’s quick and easy to use, great clarity too. Love how the camera follows you and zooms in and the fun icons you can attach to your face!Improvement Points: That if you need to move to kitchen or other rooms in house you can’t continue conversation as the minute you unplug it switches off. Be great if it could contain some reserve of battery power to move around house without loosing connection. Be great to of screen worked in sun outside like kindle do. ... MoreGood Points: Saved me through lockdown as I’m on my own so bought to see my family for a more reality feel and the feel of sharing their family time which a phone didn’t. Otherwise I love it. Cost I bought because of lockdown but otherwise I wouldn’t spend that when I could use I pad or phone. It is good though. Be great if you could go on later to work on smart tv apps to transfer to tv like apple mirror does.

When it works, it's great

Bought this to interact with our grandchildren during the pandemic lockdown, and kept using it for storytime and extra chats when we progressed to outdoor visits. When it works well, it's a beautiful thing; kids love the stories and Snapchat-like effects, and the camera does a good job tracking them. It was a big help during this time. The problem is that it somehow lost track of my WhatsApp account, or something, even though it was still there in settings, and now the kids' call rings only on my phone, not on the Portal. A tech support guy there recommended detaching and then reattaching my WhatsApp account from the Portal in settings, but that didn't help. On a forum somewhere, people recommended returning the device to factory settings and starting all over. Still, I shouldn't have to.
