I have "weird" shaped feet in that both are slightly wide but not quite a full wide, one foot is slightly wider than the other, and the other is slightly longer. I have always struggled to find comfortable shoes. The first pair I got was the actual shoe version of this boot. It is the most comfortable and only shoe I know that I can hike more than 2 miles without my feet screaming from blisters/hotspots etc. That is how I ended up here. I liked the shoes so much I decided to try these and that was a mistake. These boots do not even seem like they are made from the same company. They feel like walking on 2x4 planks with no padding at all under foot. I haven't gotten blisters but have walked a very well groomed trail and after 3 miles my feet were done. In addition they make a weird popping sound located somewhere around the top side by the toe cap (right and somewhat on the left). I can definitely say I won't be ordering the boots again, but the shoe version will be my go to. So if these boots caught your eye, I would definitely say try them on and walk in them. But my recommendation would be to either go with the shoe version (day and night difference) or something else.

I am hard on footwear. I need the ankle support due to old injuries and these fit the bill for almost everything. I wear them to my office job, working outdoors on the farm, and hiking Moab trails. The traction is great on every surface including slickrock yet they still don't seem to trap much mud or debris to track into the house. They are a little heavier than the non-waterproof version and are a little warmer as you'd expect. I have both. My only complaint is that these run a little smaller than the non-waterproof version and one of the boots is now a bit too tight. I don't remember this being an issue at first and think maybe the boots shrunk a half size after being soaked a few times. And I mean SOAKED. The cushioning and weight are a lifesaver for those with a bad back.

You will not regret this purchase. I was initially hesitant because price is important to me, but so is safety and quality. They protected my ankles from rolling, kept my feet warm and dry, and comforted my soles after hours and hours on my feet. The grip in the sole was amazing. I spend 36 years in the U.S. army where good foot gear was a “must have”, built for tough terrain and various weather conditions. However, comfort was not a heavily weighted criteria. Civilian foot gear was just to opposite and wore out quickly, or worse, fell apart in use. I bought my first Merrell MOAB approximately 2014 and wore them for rugged Northwest outdoors excursions. The boots preformed amazingly well in all terrain and cold weather, minus deep snow. Hot weather, above 80F-90F I needed to change six and air cool my feet. As a moderate insulated boot, I wouldn’t wear them above 90F unless transitioning to higher altitudes where weather was cooler. My feet were always dry in wet weather and my inserts were upgraded once in 8 years. My feet were always dry in wet weather and my inserts were upgraded once in 8 years. I can’t believe the comfort. My old boot tread wore so I bought a new pair of Wolverines. They have modernized tread, otherwise, the same boots. I love them. I immediately went to my upgraded inserts and feel like I am walking on air. These are surprisingly light weight for rugged foot gear. Highly recommend for ankle high foot protection among outdoorsmen.
I’m 6’5 and usually around 280lbs wearing a 14 wide. I bought these because they had better reviews and size/width combos making it easy to find a great fit. I think if you’re doing some more middling severity of hiking then these would be great as they are very comfortable. I attempted to use these primarily for steeper, rockier and longer hikes/backpacking and after my second pair of these I have realized they are just not made for that. With both pairs by 50 miles with this type of use the sole had begun to come away from the shoe and water proofing had begun to fail because of that. I understand that a shoe made more for this type of use can be found for more money but I can also manage the more mellow terrain that the Moab maxes out in with a shoe almost half ... MoreI’m 6’5 and usually around 280lbs wearing a 14 wide. Ultimately the Moab only seems to exist to serve the needs of somewhat mellow terrain at maximum comfort. I would give it a lower rating but I imagine that this may be an issue that is more a result of the amount of weight I’m carrying and potentially adding extra stress on those failure points. Basically, if you’re on the heavier side and wanting to get some more burly use out of something you’d be better off spending $50-80 more. I’m having better luck 100 miles in on a pair of Merrell Rogue Hikers.
I wore this boot for around 10 hikes of short to moderate length and intensity. It has good breathability, and does a great job holding the foot comfortably.I've had two problems with the shoe though. First, a minor issue. Near the heel at the bottom is something structurally hard and rigid. On steeper uphill climbs you will feel this generally. Maybe it just needs to be broken in even more, but after 10 hikes I still felt it. Overall its minor I think.Second, and the bigger issue, was this shoe had poor traction in loose soil, or even small amounts of gravel, whenever I was going down a descent. I'm in the PNW, so even a light amount of pine needles or something made me fear falling. Even walking slowly and carefully, it was prone to slipping when more weight ... MoreI wore this boot for around 10 hikes of short to moderate length and intensity. I'm in the PNW, so even a light amount of pine needles or something made me fear falling. Even walking slowly and carefully, it was prone to slipping when more weight was put on the foot. To its credit, I never actually fell and the foot caught traction after sliding a few inches. But this destroyed my knees. Swapped these shoes out Oboz, which has a more aggressive tread and I've been able to do the same hikes I did before without slipping once.
I gave these five stars after about a month and am now following up after having owned these for about 15 months. I have two companions that together reduce the rating. First, they are no longer water proof at all. My morning walk includes a short hike across a grass playfield. If there is the slightest amount of dew my feet and socks get soaking wet.Second, the metal hooks used for lacing the shoes are pointed such that they easily will snag the shoes lace from the other shoe, tied into a bow. This has caused be to stumble and fall at least five times. I now take great care ensuring the the shoelaces are securely tucked into the boot or the sock, especially when during hikes where a fall could be cathastrophicl. I had to replace the shoe laces but otherwise the shoes will last for at least one more season.
These are quite possibly the last boots I'll ever need, if I don't outgrow them. If I do, though, I know that I'm getting another pair. What I like:- The build quality and general durability is very good. I've used them extensively for a long time and they show no signs of wear.- Although I haven't tested the waterproofing very much, they've been good for the times I have. I wouldn't wade 6km down a creek with them, and the length means you can't go in very deep water, but they are excellent for what they're made to do.- They are extremely comfortable, more comfortable than any other shoes I've worn.- My feet have never overheated or been too cold. However, they are still very much functional and they did not damage the surrounding leather at all when they were pulled on.- They are not very breathable and my feet start to smell when I wear them for too long. It's not noticeable until I take them off, though, and it's an expected tradeoff for the warmth and waterproofing. But ultimately, those are just nitpicks on an awesome boot. Well done Merrell!
This was my third pair of Moabs, the first two being the Model 2; all of the pairs I have owned have been size 15, medium width, and mid ankle.I struggle to find boots that will fit my size 16 foot with a giant toebox and minimal arch, and as a result the Moabs have historically been a blessing for me. I remember the first hike I brought the Moab 2s on, I was absolutely stunned by how well they performed for such a reasonable price. My first pair (bought 2021) lasted me through hundreds of miles (with the help of Nikwax) of hiking through boggy Adirondack terrain, arid Utah sand, and as work boots on salty roads in Colorado. When the heel lift loop broke I bought my second pair. My first pair (bought 2021) lasted me through hundreds of miles (with the help of Nikwax) of hiking through boggy Adirondack terrain, arid Utah sand, and as work boots on salty roads in Colorado. When the heel lift loop broke I bought my second pair. The lower toe cap separated from the sole rather quickly compared to the first pair which came as a surprise, but it wasn't a huge deal. When I saw my opportunity to replace these with the new Moab 3s on sale, I jumped on it.Because I have loved these boots so much, I am going to be nice in saying this. The new design of the heel lift loop is nice, and makes me more confident that it will be durable. I also feel like shoes fit my feet a bit better than the second model. However, after 3 days on the trail, with only 34 miles to show for it, I can say that the traction on the sole has made me lose a lot of confidence in this boot. Obstacles that I would have never thought twice about putting my weight on in the Moab 2s have become full on risk assessments with these boots. If I see terrain that is slippery I recoil in fear because I have already taken more than one tumble, and don't want my day on the trail to be over because these boots slip. I have found this to take a lot of the rhythm and enjoyment out of my hike, because I am constantly asking myself if the soles of these boots can handle it.I don't know if I got a lemon, or if the wet summer is just really throwing me off, but I have come too close to injury in these boots to feel confident in them again.
I bought these 13.5 months ago at my local REI. Unfortunately, I injured myself 1 week later (not hiking) so they got minimal use last year. This year, some use but not that much due to my collection of alternative footwear for hiking -- approach shoes, technical approach shoes, trail runners, mountaineering boots. So I estimate I've hiked in these maybe 20 days total. The tread looks very new. But the uppers, on BOTH boots, already starting to fall apart.See photos below of excellent tread yet already unraveling stitching on the uppers.BTW, I bought these to replace some Solomon hiking boots I'd had several years.
