I enjoy purchasing and restoring "distressed" instruments, especially guitars. I was attracted to this Martin (1) because of the famous name; (2) because it was advertised as being in damaged "BEATER" condition and sold at a relatively low price; (3) because I like the tone of a mahogany guitar. I have a comparable Guild D-125, newer and in better shape. I like them both but the Martin sounds a little bit "sweeter"- I can't describe the difference more clearly- its action is a bit easier, possibly because it's a mature instrument: about eight years old. It obviously had a rough life; I've repaired much worse. It arrived dusty but an initial cleanup with furniture polish did wonders. I literally walked around Sam Ash plucking low E strings listening for a deep rich sound. Martin seemed to have more than anyone else. I liked the look of the Mahogany top/back/sides/neck. The ripples of the grain add a beautiful touch to the color of the wood. The tone has totally warmed up more and grown deeper over the 10 or 11 months she's been home with me.I have the MFX740 Bronze Acoustic Guitar Strings (Martin strings, they call them Tommy's Choice) on there and it just gives this rich low rumble on the low E and the D strings that if I have my feet up on my desk I can feel on my desk. I find the 1-1/16 nut width is very comfortable for all day jams. I have a Taylor 214 KOA that is so very playable, but my ear loves the Martin low ends. I am a happy camper. This is a very special Martin! I bought the shaded, and it has the look and feel of an old leather jacket...its one of the most attractive guitars out there in a dark, worn, sort of way. plays wonderful. Came well setup...BUT lacked the loud, strong bass I expect from a Martin Dreadnought. Its beautiful sounding instrument, but 'disappears' in large jams.I play in large (20 pickers) bluegrass jams, with banjos, fiddles, string bass, mandolins, etc. all firing off together, and it LOUD! This beauty gets lost in the crowd. My (much less expensive) Martin DRS2 is no 'cannon', but compared to this beauty it sounds twice as loud and more articulate in those heavy pickin' sessions. I tried different strings (D'Addario EJ16's) to no avail.I loved this guitar, but had to ... MoreThis is a very special Martin! This is designed after the old time Post depression guitars. It has a warm sound that vibrates your belly when played.It tunes well & stays.It has a comfortable neck shape & is super light. Almost strange to pick up light.There is a phenomenal low tone while keeping highs.It has a basic finish and no bindings, which makes it seem at first glance simple. These traights are for performance without the huge dollars & when played , it shows... or sounds.It fingers well & has good finger picking & strumming qualities.Best for the dollar Martin around if sound & playability is the concern.Not too fancy in looks... Whooooo cares. It is beautiful of you see it & aren't they all about sound & playability?Bottom Line... Love it. & Didn't spend 4500. Yahoo.

I also love the smell of the mahogany; like an old church grand piano, the smell of aged elegance and prestige, an instrument worthy of ultimate respect. Im intimidated at times to pick it up and play it, till I remember; Oh Yea, it mine; I can do what ever I want with it. and then wondering after playing it a while; where did the time go. The guitar sound so good that it make me sound like a much better guitar player then I really am. The guitar comes with a hard case thats a prefect fit. If your looking for something ... I really can't say enough good things about this instrument and my experience.The D15m is the real deal, and blows similar guitars away. The grand price point is such a sweet spot, particularly for Martin guitars. You really can't go wrong with the d15m. I even played the DRS-1 to compare it... and there simply is no comparison...I loaded my D-15m with a LR Baggs Anthem SL pickup, which has been a stellar improvement- and has turned it into a fully giggable instrument. One small gripe would be that I wish Martin made a d15m model with a pickup already installed- but I guess that is somewhat going against the spirit that this instrument was made in. Overall, I probably paid the It stays in tune so well that I don't have to worry about re tuning every time I play, or even when using a Capo- which was a big issue with my Seagull.The case the D15m comes with is also a work of art. Nice green, soft interior with a small cubby for holding stuff. I also had another pin strap installed at the heel of the guitar, for added strap security.Martin's stock strings are also surprisingly good... I'm actually excited to try different strings on the guitar, including Martin's retro strings and i've also heard good things about John Pearse strings- normally, i'd just throw on elixir's and be done with it, but this is a gorgeous instrument that will definitely react to whatever strings you throw on it.. The guitar itself is so light and reactive to your playing, that it can really handle any style of playing or dynamics you throw at it. I was amazed at how well a standard C chord rings out... and just keeps resonating.I bought the D15M specifically because of it's simplicity. All solid wood. gorgeous Mahogany! Extremely minimal appointments - but to me, that what makes it gorgeous. Sure, you can buy a Martin made with more exotic woods, fancy inlays, and a finish... But over time, those things will start to fade away and become less pretty- it'll also be 3 times the amount.Huge thanks to zZounds for making the transaction smooth, and the pay as you play system is bloody brilliant.This is an instrument that I will absolutely baby. Mostly because someday, I want to be able to show this USA crafted instrument to my future wife and children and play songs I've written for them - and I cannot wait for that day. You're buying an heirloom and you wont be disappointed. It has helped me as a performer not be so conscious or concerned about my guitar tone, so I can focus on singing and other aspects of the performance.I know this has been long winded, but I'll close with this: I cried the first time I tuned this guitar up and played it. I bought this guitar online on my day #110 without electricity in San Juan, Puerto Rico after hurricane Irma/Maria. Yes, I was desperate, impulsive and looking forward to anything that would give me some type of hope. I've been playing electric guitars for a few years but never owned an acoustic. Yes, I was desperate, impulsive and looking forward to anything that would give me some type of hope. I've been playing electric guitars for a few years but never owned an acoustic. Obviously that fact that no power is required for this guitar was a plus but I also wanted to hear something new, something that would inspire me to hang on until life gets better if it ever does.That's the beauty of music. Music is a hobby and I established my budget at $2K - I was looking for warm tones, value, quality, no frills required (price point trade off), fun to play. I was not able to play the guitar before purchasing because I live outside the continental U.S and was having trouble finding desired products in local music stores. The D-15M is constructed with Mortise/Tenon neck joint. I don't think this makes a big difference in sound, more of a personal preference that still kept me within budget. The color burst stain is a minor difference and I prefer it as well. It has a classic look and the origins of this guitar has interesting history. I would like to thank all those that wrote up reviews for the product, you guys are on the money - I was confident that so many positive reviews from musicians at all levels had to be accurate!
It’s a nice guitar and has a good set up and perfect intonation. Best played with a plectrum or finger plucked . Does not sound good with standard strings hand strumming .Mine had a small Nick on the top and a long scratch on the second fret . The main issue is that I also own the sigma version for £250 . It looks identical but sounds much better and has a good pick up in addition .
