I had the previous version of this (which after under 2 years stopped functioning due to poor build quality as so many Manfrotto items I've owned have) and I have to say this is a worse design. Primarily, the previous version had a notch on either side of the barrel for the ball to roll into (i.e. if you want your monitor at an acute angle/facing up so you look down onto it if you are using a top handle for instance). This only has the notch on one side, which means the locking knob HAS to go on the left. This just limits the options of where you can place this piece of kit on your rig. With the previous version, you could just swivel it around if something got in the way, b/c the notch allowed the same functionality no matter which side the lock was on. This mount is very nice. It doesn't have any slippage, even when paired with my Atomos Inferno on my FS5. It offers a quick way to change angles. The locking mechanism is very smooth. I would recommend this for anyone who needs a quick mount for a monitor or external recorder.

I'm a freelance videographer and have owned several ball-head shoe adapters for my 7 camera display, but all have fallen short for one reason or another. They either loosen regularly or are difficult to adjust on the fly. Some require a hex head wrench to tighten to the cold shoe and/or to adjust the ball head's position. The Manfrotto 492 is well made, easy to use and it's large knob makes adjusting and tightening a mounted display fool-proof. Plus, it looks professional. I'm pleased with this purchase even though it was considerably more expensive than smaller units.

This thing is heavy and robust! I can TRUST this thing and my monitor when it's mounted. Sure it may have 1 or 2 small quirks, but nothing I can't get around. If they made this a 1/4-1/4 version, that'd also be awesome!
This is the next size up in manfrottos mini ball heads. 3rd gen I believe. Smooth positive lock on base to shoe mount is very secure. The rotation and axis of the ball is flexible and hold very sturdy. Able to mount small monitor or grip mid weight devices specific around shoe mount.
The Manfrotto 492lcd Ball Head is the best way to secure your valuable photo equipment, such as an Atomos Screen. The Manfrotto ball head is far superior to other devices I have tried. I am now confident in the security of my Atomos V.
The updated Manfrotto 492 LCD Micro Ball Head with Shoe Mount is more than up to the job of holding my Atomos Ninja V monitor attached to my Nikon Z6. Adjustments are easily made by loosening the single knob which frees up the ball and the base (the part attached to the shoe mount) to be rotated and repositioned into whatever position you want (this action does NOT loosen the shoe mount from the hot shoe on your camera - there is a separate thumbwheel for that). One comment about the silver thumbwheel that screws down onto the camera's hot shoe – it comes engraved with the model number of of the ball head and the edges of the engraving are rough which in turn can scratch your camera's hot shoe when the thumbwheel is tightened. One comment about the silver thumbwheel that screws down onto the camera's hot shoe – it comes engraved with the model number of of the ball head and the edges of the engraving are rough which in turn can scratch your camera's hot shoe when the thumbwheel is tightened. My solution was to use a flat head screwdriver to unscrew the square hot shoe foot and flip the thumbwheel over so that the engraved side faces up (at the bottom of the black ball head part) and the smooth (non-engraved) side faces down and is the side that tightens down onto the rails of my camera's hot shoe. Once the thumbwheel is flipped simply screw the square hot shoe foot back on. So apart from this minor issue of the rough engraving, this LCD ball mount is outstanding.
I was tired of all these cheap cold shoe adapters, so I decided to just spend the money and buy this Manfrotto cold shoe adapter. I bought it for my Atomos Ninja and so far it works like a charm!
I've used a number of different units basically similar to this one before. They all have fallen short in terms of robustness. They always seem to come loose or are just weak overall. This one is the best of the lot. It is very robust and holds position well with a moderate amount of tightening. The weakest part of the system is the shoe on your camera - no fault of this device. But beware to not tighten the knurled shoe lock ring too tight. I have had one seize and become unusable.
It's an order of magnitude better than cheaper and lighter knockoffs. You can position a 9 monitor with battery at any angle and it will stay there on a moving camera. Can't say that about the other mounts, and I've tried them all.
