Said die grinder had been through Katrina and was now overheating. sadly, the old die grinder holder for lathe work does not fit the Makita and I shall have to fabricate one out of maybe Brazilian cherry by drilling out the center for Makita and slitting the block so it can be tightened w/ thumbscrews. The price was low on this apparently never used machine and it features veriable speed w/ constant power. NO ONE could be of any help as to finding a factory made holder for use on my lathe cross slide. What else can be said about Makita's quality? I would buy again.

Bought after the straight die grinder and angle die grinder I was using with my Husky 8 gallon air compressor would not work past a few seconds (the compressor cannot maintain 4scfm, although it will deliver at that rate intermittently). I love the side handle- has already proved its worth in helping clean up metal work projects us burrs.

I chose the SJS model with the lock on switch simply because I have carpal tunnel already and Im glad I did. Its ergonomic (as much as an electric die grinder can possibly be), it has tons of power, and with the right carbide burr, it will annihilate steel at a rapid pace.

I also purchased this tool for use with "Kutzall" carbide bits, specifically for use with their "Wood Blaster" 2" domed bit since it has a limitation of 10K RPMs. The adjustable speed of the GD0800C fit the purpose beautifully, allowing amazing control for scribing branches into beautiful Adirondack style railings. Call me a bit cynical, but not every Makita tool has been a winner in my 30-year carpentry career. This one sure is. Yes, it's a large tool, but the extra weight and leverage helps to keep it from deflecting off your workpiece. It runs very smoothly on ball bearings, has excellent ergonomics and enough power to not bog down or overheat even in hard daily commercial use. I expect it to last for decades. A bit of plastic would make this a superior tool Makita.

I did decide to buy this tool with intentions of using it for more chores like those shown in the pictures so I accept it. 2) Soft start is a double edge sword. It does make the tool start up smoother, especially with the higher powered motor. The problem is for long shank tools such as 6" long carbide burr bits. It comes up to speed so slowly that it crosses through a critical frequency for the long shank tools causing them to oscillate wildly before bending and creating all kinds of havoc. I had this happen with two different tools and it is quite scary. Just be warned. The biggest complaint I have is the on/off switch. While I like this type of switch on most tools, it is difficult to turn off in an emergency situation like the one I mentioned above. I have small hands and the size and weight of this tool make it difficult to control the tool and get it turned off if something happens. Overall, this is a very well built and smooth running tool. It is a little oversized for most traditional die grinding applications so just make sure you need heavy duty, otherwise, I would try the smaller model.
Great tool with the right bits. I'm using some kutzall rasps for wood and this tool cranks. It's like a dremil on a ton of steroids. I'm probably going to get a second just to have 2 rasps ready to go at once. Changing bits is kind of a pain in the rear. But the tool removes material like I'd hoped and is worth the money! Let's just see how much abuse it can Handle. Iv only put about 3 hrs on mine so far. I hope it lasts. I know how to treat tools so I should be good. I have other makita tools and they are good!
This Makita die grinder is for the serious cylinder head and intake manifold port/polish maniac. This is my 3rd one in 25-plus years of serious use. They seam to last an average of 500-hours each. Cheap ones only last 20-40 hours max. I will continue to only rely on the Makita GD0800C. The Best!
This is the second Makita Die Grinder I purchased. The first one was returned in two days after the Collet was two small to accept the 1/4 shaft of a bit as it was supposed too. I assume a metric collet (not a 1/4 collet) was placed in it by error at the factory. Returned it, ordered the 2nd one but purchased a better model with speed control. Received it and installed bit easily, then used for 20 minutes and tried to remove bit. The collet would not release bit, tried for 2 hours and bit is stuck in grinder.I know must ship the grinder with my bit in it to a service center to have it removed and returned to me. Upon receiving it with carver bit removed back I will return the Die grinder for a refund. After two faulty Die Grinders back to back, I will not purchase ... this is a very simple tool . one switch off or on. i like the side handle which makes it more comfortable to use than the other manufactures. i have only one complaint. i though half the parts were missing no body ever taped the box shut neither the manufacturer or who ever shipped it.

IMO this tool mass is much easier to control for grinding to tight visual tolerances, than are lighter weight air tools. the motor runs beautifully. plenty of beef for grinding steel wi. high productivity. hearing protection required but then the noise is OK. I got this tool to do weld prep and weld cleanup on custom furniture and i love it wherever overall access is easy. the only down side you absolutely need to consider is the tool length, and the width if you use the ancillary handle, which is very handy. The basic tool is ~14" long plus the burr, and another 4" or so for the pigtail that comes out the back end. So total length may be an issue for some types of projects, also the width is almost 8" with the optional side handle in place & I find I do like to use the side handle to steady the tool more than I thought I would.
