Amazing laptop, has the latest 12th gen Intel CPU

I bought this laptop during black Friday sale and it has done wonders for me. Looks and feels premium. 14 inch is a good size, fits any bag and very light with just 1.4kg weight.Amazing powerful laptop that has mx 550 dedicated graphics card.Only downside is battery as the Intel I7 chipset is power hungry. Battery lasts 6-7 hours. Lenovo vantage software definitely helps with its intelligent cooling performance.Wait until the laptop goes on sale before purchasing.

I can’t tell you how long I’ve spent thinking and researching what my next laptop would be. I really wanted something that was cool and quiet (the i7-8550u in my old laptop seemed to trigger the loud fans frequently) - and ideally had amazing battery life.Honestly – I wanted a MacBook. I think two generations of processors came and went in the entries on my spreadsheet until I made my final decision!I wanted something that felt premium and had more screen real estate than my outgoing 13ā€ 16:9 laptop, but I also wanted something not that much heavier than its 1.3kg weight. I really wanted something that was cool and quiet (the i7-8550u in my old laptop seemed to trigger the loud fans frequently) - and ideally had amazing battery life.Honestly – I wanted a MacBook. At least I thought I did until I used one for a few days and realised how frustrating working with multiple windows is on MacOS. The dragging and repositioning of windows, maximising, minimising – all that sort of stuff that you take for granted is just horrible on Mac. Oh well.I ruled out multiple laptops on price, weight, heat, fan noise, screen type (no OLED for me thanks – can’t have Football Manager menus causing burn in) and size (lots of 13ā€ options that are just a bit small). Finally I settled on this marvellous laptop with its 14.5ā€ screen, and crucially ordered the matte version and got the version without the 3050 dGPU – because I knew that the 6800HS has the best integrated graphics ever; plenty good enough for Football Manager! So, where to start with the actual review? It feels premium. Lovely finish, no sharp edges, great screen. Choosing matte was 100% the right choice. I don’t miss the slightly more vibrant output of a glossy screen and I certainly don’t miss the reflections I used to get from my old laptop. If I was watching movies all day in a dark room I might think otherwise, but I’m using this for work and a smidge of entertainment in normally lit rooms and matte is perfect. 14.5ā€ is such a great size – still massively portable, but great for productivity too.The keyboard is nice – perhaps not the best ever but certainly very good. The trackpad seems pretty much as good as you’ll get outside MacBooks (I still use a mouse though). If you get this version with an AMD processor you don’t get Thunderbolt 4 and you get two USB type A ports instead of one plus an HDMI port, in addition to the two USB type C ports, that the Intel version also has. Honestly, I just don’t need Thunderbolt 4 (and yes, it works with my docking station fine) and having two USB type A ports is great – wifi mouse receiver in one, headset in the other – perfect! As well as that you get far better integrated graphics than you would with Intel – a much better decision if you aren’t getting the RTX 3050 as well. The processor and iGPU with Radeon 680M graphics seem amazing. There are three power modes that work whether plugged in or on battery, but I just stick with ā€˜battery saver’ regardless because even with only 15 watts running to the processor, it does everything that I need it to flawlessly i.e. standard office work, browsing etc. You’d probably need to turn it up to ā€˜intelligent cooling’ or beyond for some more intensive tasks, but I’m even playing Football Manager on 15 watts because the match engine gives me close to 60fps on medium settings whilst keeping the fans really quiet and the chassis cool. (On intelligent cooling you can get 60fps on high settings but at the expense of more heat and noise – not loads, but I’m being considerate to my lap, and the person next to me on the sofa).Any negatives? Well, the speakers are your standard laptop speakers but do seem a bit quieter than what I’m used to. I also would have loved a 1080p version rather than the slightly pointless 3k resolution, which would have meant more battery life. I haven’t put it to the test, but it looks like a 7-8 hour battery life which is just ā€˜ok’. It does have that feature where you can charge it just to 80% so as to protect the health of the battery, which is good.In conclusion – I LOVE this laptop! I don’t normally write reviews but just had to this time. I’m so used to over-researching things and then still making a mistake, but this time I really feel I got it right! Even the less than amazing battery life isn’t enough to knock a star off. Highly recommended – get the matte screen and if you don’t need a 3050, don’t bother with it. With those options – and in the sale, I got this for under Ā£1,100 which is about the same as my old laptop, and this is sooo much better!

I very nearly hard-crashed the setup (but decided to be patient a little longer) before it decided to come back to life and finish the process. I'm not sure whether that was a hardware or software issue, so I decided (hoped) it was an anomaly.I've owned the laptop for less than 4 weeks and I'm already seriously considering returning it. After upgrading to W11 and deciding I didn't like it, I downgraded back to W10. That caused all manner of (software) problems, which were eventually resolved by reinstalling W11 (numerous times) to get the laptop working as it should. Given this was a (Windows) software issue, I cant' really blame Lenovo. However, what I have noticed and now started to document is the fact that, on a number of occasions, my laptop has simply refused to wake up after I've put it to sleep. Once, after several minutes, it finally responded. But on at least three occasions, it's remained completely inactive - a blank screen - for more time than I cared to wait (and I'm more patient by nature than I should be). I'm beginning to wonder whether it's related to the same issue I had when setting up the machine the first time. This morning, I went to turn on my laptop and there was nothing. No response. I had put the machine to sleep, so wondered whether this was the usual playbook of simply not responding. However, there was no light showing on the power button so I decided to plug the laptop in and, voila, it came to life. Apparently, the battery was on zero percent! This makes absolutely no sense for a machine put to sleep with well over half the battery power.Unfortunately for Lenovo, they emailed me this morning to request my thoughts, and I really wish I had something better to write. I'm very disappointed with this machine and because of the problems I have experienced so far, I am going to have to return it and start again. Given I am a self-employed freelancer, this is something I could really have done without. I trusted Lenovo to deliver a similar experience to the one I had with my Yoga 900s (albeit with a number of sacrifices: no 2 in 1 / 360 degree hinge; not as light; no touchscreen) but so far I have been left disappointed and frustrated because Lenovo can and should be able to do better than the experience I am having.

Fan and Colour issues present
3 October 2023

The laptop is fantastic in some areas but has configuration issues. Firstly, the fans are always on. I have no idea why, but they just do not turn off ever. No BIOS setting seems to fix it and I can't adjust it myself because it's locked down.Secondly, the colour settings aren't adjusted correctly. Using vantage to change them actually makes the xoukrs less accurate. Considering how great the screen is, this issue really needs to be solved. The wait time to receive it was an utter nightmare.Everything else is great. Nice quality, quite fast, great screen, battery life is good, not great, etc. Has some critical issues which I think are being ignored.

I was really looking forward to this laptop, given the rave reviews of previous Slim 7 Pro models. Here are my thoughts after a few weeks:Pros:*Looks nice and build appears to be pretty good.*Given that it's a 16-incher with an aluminium chassis and discrete GPU, it's an acceptable weight.*Hasn't yet got overly hot (although I've not done anything overly intense).Cons:*Absolutely atrocious webcam. Unacceptable for late 2021, in my opinion, particularly given the pandemic and the rise of home working. Even at 720p, I compared it to 4-year-old Thinkpad T470s and the Slim 7 Pro was much worse! Budget quality; do not buy if you'll be doing a lot of web conferencing.*Lots of issues with crackling/tearing/popping sound from speakers. Not sure if hardware or software fault. Forums suggest many are having this issue with Windows 11 but Lenovo decided to release this laptop with W11 (despite the upgrade from W10 being free and we could've waited until the issues were ironed out). Not convinced that Lenovo tested it sufficiently. If you're sold a laptop, it should work out of the box / as sold. I lost audio altogether within a few days and had to reinstall drivers! Sound now back but still crackling.*Got a Blue Screen crash within first few weeks, while just watching Netflix, with barely anything installed. Upon restart, network adapters/drivers not being picked up and was without internet altogether for a while!Things to be aware of:*Misleading marketing - the images show the laptop having 2x USB-C ports. Further digging reveals that any model with discrete GPU will NOT have this but instead a rectangular Lenovo charger port and 1x USB-C. This is despite all of the advertised models having a discrete GPU (unless you buy a custom one, which costs more to remove the graphics card). The pictures advertising this product are therefore for a model you aren't even expected to buy.*Glossy display - naturally very reflective, but to be expected.*The discrete graphics card will be run at only 35W - fans become noticeable when this comes into play, although not high pitched, thankfully.*I haven't properly tested battery life but given it's a large display and touchscreen, don't expect too much (particularly if you need the discrete GPU)*When you first use the laptop, you will be asked to sign in with a Microsoft account, with the local/normal sign-in options hidden! If you want to get around this, disconnect your router during initial set up.I don't know if I just got a bad machine but I was really looking forward to what looked like a great laptop on paper. It's so far been a disappointing and frustrating journey of troubleshooting. Lenovo are very fortunate I'm giving 2 stars just because I got it in the sales.

Good but let down in two areas

Lovely fast, compact laptop. Loses one star for the lack of ports and that upgrading the hdd is not easy. Loses a second star for the Lenovo warranty process. As this was old stock (so I found out after purchase) it only had 4 months warranty left. This immediately led me to believe I had purchased a 2nd laptop and made me angry. Turns out Lenovo set the warranty at the factory and you have to email them with proof of purchase to get it reset. What a stupid system! I wouldn't buy another Lenovo because of this. The warranty should kick in upon registration of the laptop. This makes me distrustful of Lenovo.

I was immediately attracted to this device when it was announced as it had:• 32GB of RAM (with the soldered RAM trend this is important)• AMD Ryzen 6 series (with great power consumption and integrated graphics)Reading reviews of the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 Pro series mentioned how the Lenovo did a really good job of keeping things cool despite the powerful innards, and this is true for this model too.So far this laptop is great. What I like• It feels solid and premium• The keyboard is lovely to type on• Stays relatively cool and the battery life is very decent if you leave it at 60Hz refresh rate.• The screen is colourful and really pops• Love the disable camera switch on the side• Easy to handle with lovely smooth edges. Love this laptop, I had tried a different cheaper model and really disliked it. However, this one is perfect. I needed something fast, with a lot of space and something light to carry around for my private practice business. This is perfect, the camera quality is great and it's been smooth and sleek. I got this in the sale for £500 and it is absolutely worth it, the only downside being that there are only USB-C ports and only one of them (apart from the charging port and SSD port) and I often like to plug in a HDMI cable for another screen to work on as well as a mouse pad which I've not been able to have both. That's the one downside, other than that it's a perfect machine and it was exactly what I was looking for. The actual laptop feels like metal too so it looks ... MoreLove this laptop, I had tried a different cheaper model and really disliked it. However, this one is perfect. Great value high performance large screen laptop

Very pleased with this laptop (we purchased 3 for work). Personally upgrading from a 2015 Dell XPS 13.Great screen (only minimal backlight bleed when looking at solid black screen at high brightness), lovely keyboard and touchpad.Battery life realistically around 5.5 to 6 hours of just general office work and web browsing so a little disappointing (was hoping for 8 hours) but it is a large 16" 16:10 ratio screen.Unit stays cool and deals with everything thrown at it so far (from Zoom webinars with dual 4K USB 3 cameras and the odd bit of Xbox gaming - Forza 5 runs amazingly well vs GTX 3080 PC and an Xbox One X which we tried side-by-side at Christmas!).Only downside so far is that the unit has completely crashed and reset itself while browsing on Chrome. ...Ā MoreVery pleased with this laptop (we purchased 3 for work). Once with bluescreen of death and 3 others with it just freezing then 10 seconds later resetting itself. No meaningful error in the Windows error log. Updated all the drivers too but it's still happening. Hoping it'll be fixed soon!Minor niggles: Wish it was a little easier to actually open it up (there's no overlap or finger indent so nothing to grip when opening) and wish the charging LED on the power button gave more of an indication of charge level (e.g. going from red when low to orange, to yellow, to green when fully charged).Overall very pleased for the price paid.

Very much not worth it

I spent a very long time extensively researching which laptop would best suit my needs and I am reasonably tech-literate. However, when I received the Yoga Slim 7 Pro I was really disappointed and amazed at some very poor quality elements.Pros:- A very fast load-up- Quiet- A large spacious screen with good resolution, good qualityCons:- The worst webcam I have ever used, ever. It was worse than the 10 yr old laptop I am replacing. No I am not exaggerating, watch some videos which evidence the poor webcam quality- A mediocre keyboard which is not nice to type on, I expect better from Lenovo- A poor speaker systems- A really annoying and non-responsive keypad, very annoying to use- Very few ports - a laptop should be portable in itself, not need another ...Ā MoreI spent a very long time extensively researching which laptop would best suit my needs and I am reasonably tech-literate. It took a full month to get a refund and I had to do much chasing, badgering and had to wait for weeks to merely book for TNT to collect it, then wait in all day long. Save yourself the hassle.
