Selective sharpness ability for creative photography due to the large maximum aperture of F1.4. Stellar 35mm lens, if you get a good copy. My first copy had a sloppy loose aperture ring and made a strange clicking sound between apertures F/11-F/16 with one of the 9 iris blades flaring upwards simultaneously. So, I returned it and waited to buy another one. The second copy is pretty close to perfect. Very sharp at F/1.4 when focused properly with an M9. This lens kind of reminds me of the 50mm Summilux Asph, only its a 35mm lens. Very modern sharpness with ultra-smooth bokeh, along with a 9 bladed Aperture as well. I did own the older version which did have focus shift between apertures F/2-F/4. It was tack sharp at F/1.4 too, but was harder to nail focus on the digital M9. As for flare control, my older version 35mm lux was horrible under certain conditions. This new version seems much better at flare control.

I'm not going to on about what a wonderful lens the 35mm Summilux is - plenty of reviews attest to that! This specific version though, the Leitz Wetzlar version, just has the extra bonus of looking wonderfully low-key. No bright orange colors that stand out. Yet it is still very easily readable! I'm really glad this version happened to come along just when I was in the market for a 35 'Lux. It looks superb on my black M10-P, and of course the image quality is exceptional. Highly Recommended.

I'm using the lens on a Sony A7R with Metabones adapter. While the native 55 Zeiss FE lense is nothing short of phenomenal (albeit it could be faster), the 35mm f/2.8 really struggles with handheld shots in low light. I returned that lens, tried the Voigtlander Nokton Classic f/1.4 first (not good, super blurred full wide), then resolved to go all in with the Leica. The Summilux 35mm is an unbelievable performer, especially when coupled with Sony's focus peaking and live view zoom. Tack sharp, easy to focus, a compelling combination with the Sony A7R. The aperture ring could be a bit stiffer, the hood is not exactly sexy, the price is not for the faint of heart. Other than that, I find myself shooting 70% of the time with the Summilux, the rest with the native 55mm ... MoreI'm using the lens on a Sony A7R with Metabones adapter. It passes the test of pixel-peeping a 36MP picture shot wide open, while delivering a creamy bokeh and faithful color rendition. The size with adapter is similar to the Zeiss 55mm, and considerably smaller than the Voigtlander Nokton 35mm Asph f/1.2, the only viable alternative. Bottom line, if price is not an issue, the Summilux is the best 35mm option out there.

Astonishing right out of the box

I've got a lot of vintage Leica glass, including a circa 1963 35mm Summicron. But having recently bit the bullet on the stellar M10 Monochrom, it's inspired me to invest in some modern optics. This gorgeous thing has my my hands shaking, the first pictures making me feel much better about the seemingly exorbitant costs. These lenses are expensive for a reason. Wow, Just wow.

Distinctive at full aperture, and if so inclined: magical !
17 May 2020

I have owned the previous model Summilux M 1:1.4 35mm for 25 years. The aspheric version is a worthwhile upgrade for me, I use it on the Monochrome type 246. If you can forget about the $$$ for a moment, you are buying a work of art, Leica glass at its best, for decades to come. I do own 9 additional Leica M lenses, my favorite is the Noctilux. This Summilux 35mm lens weighs less, is less conspicuous, is ideal for travel, and is half the price of the latter. If you are new to Leica M this could be an ideal first and perhaps only lens. The older Summilux M 1:1.4 35mm is quite comparable stopped down, the newer aspheric version is supersharp and distinctive at full aperture - wide open (this is what you are paying for) and, if so inclined, you may find it : magical !

I'd give it 4.5 stars...but could not vote fractions. Wide open it is very doable fpr documentary uses. But closed down 2 to 3 stops and it is excellent. Only complaint is the aperture ring is kind of loose. When street shooting the Leica ring gets moved easily. I much prefer the Zeiss aperture ring. Also, not a big fan of the giant Leica focus knob. This photo of The Lucky Chops was taken wide open at 1.4 with the Leica Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH Lens on a Leica Monochrom.

I love it.... but!

I waited a long time to purchase this lens as it is THE most expensive lens I have ever purchased. I had owned the 35mm summicron (latest version) and was pretty content with it so the lux really needed to prove it's worth to me. I did not but it just because it's one stop faster, but rather because I kept hearing about the phenomenal magic and 3D look this lens produces when wide open. This lens can nail focus wide open at 1.4 all day long but, it is not tack sharp and also vignettes pretty heavily. Both can add to that magical look.. and I am totally ok with it, but it is something people should know. Close down to 2 - 2.8 and the lens is amazingly sharp, the vignette fades away, and it still has an amazing pop to the images. The slightly larger size and weight does not bother me at all. So overall, and a fantastic lens for sure! just know that while the lux is not perfect at 1.4, it can produce amazing images wide open.

My favorite lens

The 35mm 1.4 is a lens you can keep on your camera forever. If you could only buy one lens this should be it. Everything from portraits and landscape to street photography and low light. The field of view is literally perfect for it all. Yes, it’s a hefty price to pay, but considering the quality it’s well worth the investment. The silver is absolutely gorgeous and looks fantastic on my Leica 10-P Safari Edition.

This is the best one.
27 December 2018

I have used and owned many different 35mm lenses on Leica digital and film Ms, including the Zeiss 35mm f/1.4 which is its strongest competitor. This one is the best. It is f/1.4, compact, and the optical performance is plenty good on my 24mp camera and will likely still be good enough if a higher-resolution M camera comes to market. I am regularly amazed by how sharp it is wide open. The Zeiss f/1.4 has less distortion and better edge performance at wide apertures, but I chose the Leica for its superior size and ergonomics. I regret owning other 35mm lenses instead of buying this one from the start.

Worth the premium it commands
25 September 2022

When purchasing the new M11 I considered other lenses to keep the cost down a bit but part of the magic of shooting with Leica is their glass. Rather than penny pinching I decided to bite the bullet and purchase this lens. I can say with absolute certainty that I have zero regrets. Wide open at f1.4 I've found it to be incredibly sharp and resolves very well even with the new 60 megapixel sensor on the m11. Wide open it does vignette a good bit but I actually love the look it gives. It's part of the lens' character. My only gripe is the minimum focusing distance but it's easily overcome by cropping in a little in post. Other than that this lens is perfect. Made extremely well and will last a lifetime.
