This set is awesome. It comes with an appropriate selection of figures with good printing and there are TONS of them. Of course that’s how it should be in this expensive of a set. The build is great and has many iconic scenes with good features and playability. If you are a Star Wars fan who has been wanting to get the Death Star for some time, now is the time to do it! This toy is absolutely amazing and totally worth any Star Wars fan's money.Minifigures: As much as I loved the set, the minifigures are what really appealed to me about this set. The level of detail that Lego put into it is fantastic. Between the new hair pieces for Han Solo and Grand Moff Tarkin, and the flexible capes for The Emperor, Darth Vader, and the royal guards, Lego did a great job with updating the minifigures. Also including a brand new droid, (the death star droid) which is an RA-7 unit was a great addition to the set, and is great replacement from the protocol droid from the original Death Star set. Younger builders also may need help with the two string functions that have to be tied as it can be a bit tricky to thread the needle through. Really the main challenge is just sticking with it as it took me about 16 hr. to build so I would recommend this set for ages around 15+ in terms of building.The Set (playability): Apart from the Minifigures, what I also really like about this set is how durable it is. With the exception of Death Star green laser beams nothing has fallen apart, and that is coming from a clumsy kid who bumps into everything. It is so durable in fact, that I think that any Lego fan regardless of age would have fun with it. Even younger fans who are just starting in their building experience will have so much fun with this set. There is also so much you can do with this set as well. Every single scene in the Death Star has been recreated so can reenact scenes from the Fourth as well as the Sixth Star Wars films. My personal favorite is the Emperor's throne room as it is my favorite Star Wars Scene in the entire franchise. Lego knocked this scene out of the ball park between the collapsing platform, to the updated window, and the bridge between the throne and the exit. Also, one more thing I have to mention, there are a ton of extra rooms and gimmicks that Lego put in this set including, an elevator, a storage floor (the bottom floor), a droid repair room, and more! Lego also has utilized the spring missiles with the Death Star's Turbo lasers which hold in nicely and do not fire at annoying times.Complaints: While this set is pretty close to perfect, it does have a couple flaws. First of all the hangar that holds Darth Vaders Tie Fighter (which Darth Vader himself can fit in) does not work very well. The Mechanism that holds the tie fighter kept leaning forward too much which was really annoying. I just removed it and like it better having an open hangar for my stormtroopers. Second, I wish Lego gave us a few more Death Star troopers and gunners as there is not enough for each of the guns, turrets, and viewing platform. Luckily I had one extra one which was all we really needed. Third, I wish that Lego had used Rogue One characters such as Director Krennic to give it the set a more updated feel. The key chain of Director Krennic is available to purchase on Lego and after purchasing him, I can honestly say that he looks great with the set and would totally recommend doing it. Finally, I wish Lego had found a way to make the beams more durable as it can be annoying to keep knocking these off. Each of these are minor issues and can be rectified and should not be the cause of a person not purchasing this set.Final Thoughts: Overall this set is a masterpiece. Not only are the Minifigures great, but the set itself is really fun to build, as each room/level reveals a scene from the movies. From an experienced Lego collector who has been collecting Lego Star Wars sets for 11 years, I can honestly say that this is my favorite Lego/Lego Star Wars set of all time.

This is the beast of all beasts; the mother of all Lego Star Wars sets in the galaxy! It's obvious that this set is not for everyone and does require a level of commitment to your hobby. That being said, this thing on the whole is an awe inspiring Lego experience. Plus, there is plenty of room for posing a large number of mini-figures without making the place look too crowded. If you have the Imperial Assault Carrier (which is sweet!), that ship's forward cargo compartment (where the extra spring loaded bolts are stored) is built up to the same level as the level 2 armory on the Death Star, enabling some scenarios where you can load and unload the ship while it is docked with the battle station. There is a lot of specific detail already covered in previous reviews, so my review is more intended to highlight the things that are not obvious at first glance. If your heart is set on this bad boy, go for it! Yes, it is expensive, but with a bit of disciplined budgeting you may surprise yourself how quickly you can raise the funds without too much financial impact. Your heart will thank you, the joy this monster will bring you far exceeds the cost. I absolutely love it!

It was launched as Lego was expanding operations overseas and suffered A LOT. Parts were missing, parts were the wrong color, some parts had TERRIBLE inconsistancies in the plastic color and some were flat out transluscent and it took MONTHS to get them traded out with Lego due to demand. It was an amazing set with a lot details but man was it a problem one. Mostly I bought the updated set in hopes of having a better made set. That said all the mentioned issues above were addressed and fixed by Lego. I also had none of those issues with the new release. The new version offers ... The new version offers a lot... but isn't without issues of its own.PROS: The biggest of these were the updates to the figures. Almost every figure has better detail and more accurate hair and faces. In every case the figures are excellent. Play feature wise this set has tons. Hidden knobs and levers let you turn and raise weapons and the death star dish and fire the cannons. The garbage compactor has a functioning trap door and crusher. There are operating cranes and elevators and shield generators. The layout was fantastically designed. Allowing scene to scene transitions that follow the movie story. The details are also amazingly well done. The most impressive thing though is just how solid the whole thing is once built. It is easy to pick up and move...but probably too heavy and awkward to do for kids under 10. It is a very stable set for the size.So-So: This set is great as a play piece but it suffers as a display piece. It is interesting to look at but not the same way the UCS sets are. There is no "skin" to the death star so you are always looking in at the rooms. For a play set it really is good for kids but for adults the spaces are so cramped in spots that it can be tricky to access for posing and play with big hands. This is a weird set...too expensive for most kids to use in daily play and not quite pretty enough for an adult display piece. I think that means it has a narrow market compared to most sets.Cons: At $500 this set should never have had stickers...at that price we should have gotten decorated parts that were painted. Additionally, the remake while having vastly nicer figures did not update the part count or overhaul the major design features of the DS that much. They made minor changes to reflect updates in parts and blaster mechanics but the part count is only 1 part higher than the original...but they upped the price $100 from the first release. That seems excessive given the 99% identical build of the set. Even with 8 years worth of inflation we should have only seen the price go up $20. The fact that they were still selling the UCS Falcon with 1300 MORE parts for the same $500 price when this was issued shows that value disparity as well.Overall this is a really, really fun build and it was a really well done set. To be honest though...I'm not sure the remake was worth the extra dollars. For $100 more we should have gotten a skin to cover it with...and price per part we could have if the UCS Falcon part count was an indicator. In the end I don't regret it...but I do feel like this set was just no bargain in the end.

If we consider this being an improvement over the older model, i honestly have quite some issues with this one.This overall t is pretty much just a revamp with barely any improvements, with slight issues being:-Areas in general are not enough detailed for a (UCS) build those days, almost all rooms need way more wall decoration, ground decoration and play features.-This main elevator is just way to tiny, so is the prison cell...you can not just play around well in those areas unless you have tiny hands, why was the size overall of the build not increased ?Same issue with the overall basement level.-What is the deal with the overall secondary elevator ? the result is overall not that great to be honest.Overall i feel this is a great deal if you want to ... It looks bigger in real life than in the photos!Each room plays tribute to various scenes in both A New Hope and Return of the Jedi. Multiples of Luke and Han offer good display value as several rooms can be viewed as complete without having to move the minifigs. Space is used well apart from the basement, but its not very noticeable as higher floors take the spotlight. There is a tiny bit of wiggle room to add some nice MOC features or tweak existing features.Very solid construction making it safe to pick up and move finished build just by holding the outer rim which was pleasantly suprising.Couple drawbacks: the book is MASSIVE ... I almost needed a whole other table for the book alone. Second drawback was the poly bags came in many multiples, for example there were five or six number 1 bags, and as many for each of the other steps. I had tupperware tub I dumped all of that step into which helped with sorting, but i would have rather had 20 steps half the size. But, I'm sure the way it was done was better for production or something with design that I'm not aware of.If you can afford this, its worth it. It was my biggest set to date and felt like a rite of passage of sorts as a AFOL. The playability is incredible with how open the rooms are, and I'm easily able to get my chonky fingers in to move minifigs. Thank you!
In the interest of full disclosure I didn't complete this build - The Boy built it and it was his first big build. He definitely enjoyed the build but found certain bits of it quite challenging (particularly fitting the central lift) and I think it may have burnt him out as he hasn't lifted a brick since finishing it nearly 2 weeks ago.The finished Death Star is surprisingly heavy. I had the joy of locating it to it's final home and picking it up the sheer weight of the finished unit surprised me. It is also BIG so it has had to go on top of the display unit which is fortunately deep enough to accept it. The real problem I have with that is that you can't see in to it too easily and all the detailing is lost for casual observation. There are LOTS of little details ... There are a ton of cool features of this set. Creators clearly paid attention to detail and thought of clever ways to incorporate interactive elements. Note: I haven't done many LEGO sets in my day nor am I a Star Wars fan so I have nothing really to compare it to. I bought as an activity to do during quarantine thinking that my nephews (3 and 5 year old star wars fans) would really enjoy playing with it and when they get older they could disassemble and re-assemble it.BUTI have completed 9/10 sets and so far have come across 3 missing pieces.For 2 of the, there ended up being 2 extra pieces of the same length but not the right width. One of the pieces was just completely missing. Thankfully, my nephews have a creator set with spare pieces of all shapes and ... MoreThere are a ton of cool features of this set.
