Optimus Prime is a very good set for a Transformers fan. A little over a foot tall, loaded with accessories, and plenty of trivia in the instructions to go along with the build. Optimus, like any Transformer should, converts from robot to his classic G1 "square-cab" semi truck without the need to disassemble him - something the G1 toy couldn't replicate (you had to remove the hands). Of course, you'd have to switch out the 2x6 tile on his bumper for each mode, but this is negligible. Accessory-wise, you get Optimus' trademark Ion Blaster (which fills the leg gap in truck mode, and with that Technic peghole on the bottom of the gun, makes for a good trailer hitch - get working, MOCists!), his orange Energon Axe (which, I'll admit, kinda makes me think of a pirate's ... MoreOptimus Prime is a very good set for a Transformers fan. You even get the standard Lego info-plaque (which with two black Technic pins that were spare parts, I used to store the extra 2x6 bumper plate on the back - thanks, pinholes!)Of course, Optimus isn't 10 out of 10 in all stats (just like the info-plaque says). The 1x4 section on his feet (the part with the clear red 1x2 tile) tends to pop a bit sometimes in transformation. The instructions tell you to put the stickers on his legs (the 2x6 tiles strike back!) upside-down, but a quick 180 fixes that right up. Optimus does have movable thumbs but his fingers are held together by a 1x3 plate, but whether or not you want to remove that is up to you - if you want articulated fingers, go for it. And be careful when you morph the chest - I tend to find that when I transform him and align the chestplate, over time the 4x4 round brick used for turning the cab around starts to disconnect slightly, but this could just be me being a dumb fleshling (as Megatron would put it - hint, hint Lego!)Regardless, with the 40th anniversary of Transformers coming soon, I highly recommend any Transformers fan get this guy. Whether or not my review helps is up to you - after all, "Freedom is the right of all sentient beings."

As the title states, this is the one set I have been waiting a long time for LEGO to build, and they did not disappoint, for the most part.Overall the build was fun and not too tedious, despite the fact that you are basically building a mirror of each side. The build was clever and the fact that Optimus can transform between robot and truck was the deciding factor for my purchase. I enjoyed the different stages of the build and was excited to see Optimus take shape. The legs cannot bend at the knees, but this can be overlooked because of the articulation in the rest of the build. Some parts are a little delicate, especially when transforming, but not a real problem. Some parts are a little delicate, especially when transforming, but not a real problem. The head's scale seems just a tad on the small side for the overall size of the body, but I thought they did a good job of building it in LEGO form. There were two things however that ruined the entire experience of this build for me. The first was the fact that the stickers were missing. When I pulled out the packages I saw the Transformers logo on the plates and a few other pieces with graphics on them and thought they were playing it smart and printing all the pieces with graphics so the stickers were not included/necessary. But less than halfway through I realized the stickers are required and they weren't included in the box. I realize this happens from time to time, but for an over $200CDN purchase, that ruined the experience. In general, LEGO needs to do away with stickers. They are always a pain to apply, and if you get them wrong, there's not much you can do about it.Secondly, the new manual is terrible! It's too dark and very difficult to see a lot of the subtle piece details, especially with the dark blue pieces. The grays were all the wrong shades so I spent time looking for pieces in the wrong colors. On the plus side, I really appreciated that the manual was shipped in a cardboard sleeve. I've had too many manuals ruined due to poor packaging, but if this is the direction the manuals are moving in, then LEGO needs to shake their heads and fix this. The poor manual quality made the build less fun overall, but the missing stickers means I don't have a finished model. I tried to submit a request for them but the support process was difficult and I have not received any confirmation indicating that my request for the stickers was received. 4-6 weeks turnaround for the missing stickers is terrible. For the cost of this set the service should be better. I purchased the AT-AT UCS but have not opened it yet, as I was saving it for a rainy day to build, but now I am very concerned that it could be missing pieces/stickers and if I don't act soon, I may miss out on the opportunity to get replacements.

I was very excited for this set. I thought the whole idea to transform without rebuilding was a great concept. However, I would not recommend the set. The build was cool up until a certain point where every time I attempted to attach a part another part fell off. When I finished the build I attempted to transform it and well lots of parts fell off. Ultimately I spent about an hour rebuilding what fell apart and again when I went to just stand it up, something fell off and I had to fix it. I went through this process at least 3 times just to get it over on the shelf. Had anything else fallen off, I would have taken it all apart and sell it.Overall, I really would not recommend this set. I still haven't been able to transform it and I am not trying again.

Disappointed by poor stability.

While building Optimus, I had a very hard time keeping parts from falling off. The whole model is very flimsy. It especially loves breaking at the pelvis/torso area, which is the core of the model. I was just holding it today and not even playing with it and the whole top half fell off and onto the floor and a piece broke in half. It was also missing a piece, which I had to order, and now I have to replace the piece that broke.Transforming needs to be done delicately and I usually have to put elements back on that have fallen off during the process. It must be meant as a display model, because it's way to delicate to actually play with. As a side note, I don't know if the blocks themselves have gotten cheaper, but I've never had pieces just pop apart on any other ... MoreWhile building Optimus, I had a very hard time keeping parts from falling off. Blocks don't seem to satisfyingly snap together, they just kind of mush together. The arm joints are bad, too. After posing they usually droop to where ever they feel like. I've never been so disappointed by a Lego set. For how much it costs, I expected better.

This was a very fun build. I appreciated that the build was divided into 10 bags. It made each phase "quick" in case I wanted to stop, and not stop "mid-bag." Like others have stated, transforming it is a bit tricky. I did it once just to transform it into the rig, but I will be displaying in robot form. Therefore, the play experience is practically zero. Pieces do come off when transforming. Although the transforming "experience" could be much improved, I am glad Lego did Optimus Prime. I have the voltron set as well, and I think both are fantastic. PLEASE do Megatron next! Fans are waiting! BTW: I thought the price was a bit steep. Luckily I purchased this on sale for 20% off of the Lego website. But $180 is a bit high. First off I want to say is I’ve been waiting for a transformer Lego set for a very long time and what I got was pretty satisfying. I also want to get out all the cons of this set. First off all I would have liked this set with out the transformation feature mostly because you lose a lot of details in the robot form. Next is the possibility. When it’s in robot form you can’t bend the knees which doesn’t let you play with it very well or just displaying it.Last but not the least it is very fragile. The whole torso can be ripped a part with little pressure and that you can’t move the legs backwards and that the head is loosely attached. Now that we got all the cons out of the way let talk about some of the pros. Another great thing is the blaster rifle he has because it is quite detailed and speaking of weapons they also include his laser axe which uses translucent orange pieces. So in conclusion I would recommend this to a friend who’s a fan of transformers but also mention the cons of this set because they’re pretty big.

It felt like they wanted to make sure that adult builders felt they got a complex build, which results in a lot of places where you're doing complex fiddly stuff to achieve an end result that you could've gotten with a single 2x2 brick. I've been feeling this way a lot about some of the Creator Expert and Icons sets -- most recently the Tallneck from Horizon: Forbidden West. So if complicated builds are your jam, this should not be a negative for you!2) Here's the kicker: this build gets you a decent display of Optimus Prime, but a major selling point is that the set transforms. And this set is so fiddly, so complex, that the result is a build that falls apart if you look at it wrong. That's fine for the Tallneck -- that thing is just going to sit on my shelf looking pretty -- but this set is supposed to transform, which means, you know, touching it. And it is just not a good build for that. The waist disconnects more often than it doesn't. The little reflector lights on the top of the feet pop off. The faceplate, and sometimes the entire head, fails to survive simple attempts to pose the figure, much less do a transformation. So if you get this set, expect to build it, re-attach the bits that fall off, and leave it on your shelf. Do not expect to impress your friends by transforming Optimus, because your friends are just going to watch pieces fall off. I started wondering if I should go Lord Business and super-glue him together.Again, it's a gorgeous set. I love the colors. I love the stuff they included. Heck, I'm keeping the manual just for the lore that came along with it. But this set could have been a lot simpler, and it probably would have been sturdier for it.

Lego and Transformers fans, roll out!
20 June 2022

Never thought I'd see an official Lego Transformer, let alone the big Autobot chief himself. It goes without saying that this is a must-have for Lego and TF fans alike. So let's get to it. Starting with the pros:- He's huge. For anyone who collects TF's this is easily a Commander-class - and rightfully so. Got a nice weight to him too.- Dripping in key details, and all the features exactly where you want them. The silver-metallic pieces give a really nice look too, so I'm glad Lego opted to go with that. Transformation is pretty straight-forward and relatively easy to figure out; takes very little time to get him from robot to truck and vice-versa. I forget the last time I had a transformer that was this quick and easy to transform.- Despite having no knee ... MoreNever thought I'd see an official Lego Transformer, let alone the big Autobot chief himself. Transformation is pretty straight-forward and relatively easy to figure out; takes very little time to get him from robot to truck and vice-versa. I forget the last time I had a transformer that was this quick and easy to transform.- Despite having no knee joints, he's actually quite posable and very stable (rubber inserts at the bottom help with that a lot) - easily one of the best-looking transformer I have in my collection. Now, the cons, because while there are many good things Lego did great here, there are some things I noticed worth mentioning:- It can be kind of fragile during handling/transformation, and some bits can easily fall off. This isn't as alarming as the torso wanting to separate; fortunately, Lego saw this and added a technic axle (thank god) to keep it from separating entirely, which helps a lot.- Only things keeping the mid-half of the assembly from wobbling is two studs (both in truck and robot form) so I kind of wish there was something more solid to keep it in place.- Smoke stacks looked a little off. This set would've benefitted from the classic tube pin that is commonly used for piping in exhausts in Lego vehicles; I made the modification myself, but still would've been nice to have from the get-go rather than silvery Technic studs.Overall, this is a fantastic set and would highly recommend - just keep in mind that it can be fragile, so if you're gonna give it to younger kids to play with, it very likely won't stay together super well. I think this could be the start of a great Transformers lineup, so I do hope Lego will churn out more Transformers characters in the future.

Love Optimus Prime but difficult build
22 June 2023

I have loved the Transformers and particularly Optimus Prime since my childhood in the 80s and I have recently discovered my love for Legos. So imagine my excitement when I discovered an Optimus Prime build. I even bought it in NYC, which was my first time at the Lego near Rockerfeller Center... then I get it home and try to assemble. I bought it in December and I am still trying to get it together in one piece.Like so many others have mentioned, it's so fragile I can't even get it all together to take a picture. I even bought some Lego glue to try to keep it together and still yet every time I try, trust me I've tried alot since I originally tried to put it together in December, it falls apart.I am writing this review now because I sat it aside for months due ... MoreI have loved the Transformers and particularly Optimus Prime since my childhood in the 80s and I have recently discovered my love for Legos. Not worth it
28 February 2023

I was so looking forward to this set. I'm a lifelong Transformers and LEGO fan.I purchased it soon after launch last summer and have been gazing longingly at the box since then. I finally gave in and put it together this weekend. And he falls apart. He falls apart all the time.I paid $180 for a LEGO Transformer that's supposed to "convert"; but every time I do it, even being super-careful because I know he's fragile, literally every time, he still falls apart. The legs are way heavy. They're attached to the torso by a 4x4 turntable that does not have the clutch to hold them on.So if you pick him up by the body, he falls apart. If you hold the body while folding the legs, he falls apart. It's frankly ridiculous. I screamed the first time it happened. No warnings ... MoreI was so looking forward to this set. No warnings at all from LEGO.Yes, he looks pretty good in robot form, but I don't like that his back is incomplete without jet-pack.Truck form is lacking. For the price I don't think he's worth it.
