A very special Laphroaig, which pays homage to the distillery’s incredible history. This bottling was specially created by John Campbell, as a fitting tribute to the distillery managers that preceded him. 1815, of course, is the year that the distillery was established, and it has continued to enrapt and impress drinkers ever since. This whisky has been matured in first fill former Bourbon American oak casks, alongside some European oak hogsheads. This is a classic Laphroaig all the way through, and a clear example of what over 200 years of legacy and expertise can produce. On the nose this whisky opens with aromas of dried fruit and woodspice, followed by waves of peat, a little sweetened citrus peel and dense toasted oak. The palate is thick, prickly and oily, with classic Laphroaig medicinal notes, golden syrup, raisins and overripe bananas. The finish is warming, long and powerful, with heavy peat that lingers for some time. A top quality Laphroaig, which reaps the benefits for a 48% ABV bottling strength and a lack of chill filtration. Definitely one that every Laphroaig fan should try, and an important piece of distillery history.
