This film is really a bargain, but less so when you factor in processing the film! I like the results I got, there were some issues but I think these are because of under/over exposure due to having to use a phone app for light metering and me struggling to get to grips with my new lens! Most of my photos have a very grainy quality, but a few turned out perfect with nice balance and crisp details. I'll continue to shoot with this film, but I'll pay special attention to my focus and aperture/shutterspeed. Almost all of my pictures were shot in good light in sunny conditions and these turned out really well. The low light pictures, less so.

I bought a couple of rolls of this on the basis that it was cheap film to test two cameras. I wasn't expecting much from budget film but I was pleasantly surprised by the results. It's not a contrasty film by any means but I rather like the tones, especially in the mid range. I'm guessing that a yellow filter, or even orange, would bump up the contrast if that's what you want. Unlike HP5 it doesn't object to being processed in Rodinal. Suffice to say I'm impressed enough to try some more.

This was the second reel of film I ever shot, and the results were incredibly positive. overall I'd say this is close to being the perfect beginner film for anyone wanting to try 35mm film photography.it's a simple and effective B&W film that has great contrast and can produce a wide range of photos depending on what you're looking for. grain can be quite noticeable at times but it can really work to your advantage in certain situations.the option of having 24 or 36 exposures means you can get creative and shoot to your heart's content, without breaking the bank.some of my favourite photos to date were taken on this film, and I recommend it to everyone who asks me about film photography.

After couple months of testing BNW films, my heart goes to the Kentmere Pan 400 and the XP2 from ILFORD. While the XP2 offers next level sharpness and details, this one (KentmerePAN400) offers a grainy-dreamy look (without neglecting quality or sharpness too much). Try this film while having a light source behind your subject, you will understand what I mean. A moderate-to-heavy glow comes from the light sources and spills on the darks. It has its purpose, you gotta love it for what it is. I'm a huge fan.
This film is made by Ilford and is a great low-cost all-rounder for beginners (like me!) 400 ISO means it handles low-light situations very well and seems to be very forgiving with good latitude. Meaning that beginners (like me!) are more likely to get good results. To be honest I found that I preferred photos taken in slightly flat lighting, rather than very high-contrast scenes, but that's probably subjective. Overall, an excellent budget option. Recommended!

The Kentmere films are slightly less "sophisticated" than Ilford films, have a little more grain and don't like being pushed as much. Ergo I'd say this can be shot at 200-800ISO with the correct processing.A great beginners film as it is forgiving and cheap, with box speed similar to the native ISO of a lot of digital cameras and phones so it's not too far from what newbies will be used to. So you have been given a 35mm film camera and you're not too sure if it's going to be any good or not. You have some choices to make, but for the purpose of testing a camera thats new to you, Kentmere 400 is your friend. This was my choice recently when I was given an Olympus OM101 Power Focus and didn't fancy wasting exensive film testing it out. I loaded it with a roll of Kenmere 400 and went to my local park. I wrte a blog about it and shared some photos I shot on Kentmere 400 with the camera. Let's just say I was pleasantly surprised. It's worth having a few rolls of this film in your stash for those days when an expensive film might not be the best choice.
I tried this as a low-cost option compared to the Agfa APX 400 I've used previously. It's not as fine-grained and more contrasty, especially when pushed one stop (mountain photo) but much more pleasing to my eye. I still find it's plenty clean when shot at box speed (BMX photo) and holds up nicely when pushed but unlike the Agfa it has the look I'm going for straight from the developer. Overall I think it's a great film to keep the cost down, experiment with and get a nice image that doesn't need any work but I'll stick to the Agfa when the project is worth the extra expense and ability to edit the image, other than that it's my new go to.
I started black and white photography 40 years ago. I used Tri-X first. After that, I used Fujifilm Neopan 400 Presto. Neopan 400 Presto was discontinued, so I used Tri-x again.Tri-x became expensive, so I started using Kentmare 400 in 2015. The price was $39.95 for a 100ft can.Kentmare 400 seems to have a thicker film base than Tri-x and Neopan 400 Presto. Also, the development time seems to be long..However, I'm not sure if the performance difference is the same.Currently, it is 71.38 dollars per can, which is high due to the depreciation of the yen. I want it to be cheaper.
