Great Trackball For User Comfort

I've actually had one of these at work for many years - definitely worn, but keeps working with a little TLC (like cleaning ball cavity regularly) - many newer designs have smaller trackball, but this one seems just right. I've tried several other trackballs, but not quite as comfortable and responsive. Even went back to trying mouse - not a fan: with any reasonably large screen to scoot cursor about, mouse is very frustrating to pickup and reposition (in limited area) before scrolling again. The Orbit trackball is a case of "they don't build 'em like they used to", so I was enthusiastic when I found one and at a very reasonable open-box condition and price.

I'm going to give the product a 2-stars rating, because the functionality of the mouse is something I am used to, and I love it. However, with that said I wish that I would have started with another mouse years ago. I have bought 3 of these Kensingtons' mouses over the past 6 years and the left click button goes completely hay-wire at about 2 years of use for me. Basically the microswitch in the button isn't built to the standards that it should be. especially after I saw there is a 6 year warranty on the product. I just noticed that with the new one, right before I threw the wrapping and literature sent with it in the trash.

Kensington Orbit Trackball w/ scroll ring

Initially I wasn't too sure how this Trackball was going to work for my needs, but it turns out that I was glad I chose this particular model. The reasons why I did go for this is due to durability, functionality and design - as it has plenty to offer at a reasonable price on Harvey Norman.Reading reviews online, I decided to go ahead and glad I did. While it may not be suitable for gaming (with the exception of say Strategy games instead of the occasional FPS, I found using an Xbox Controller works ideally and there are workarounds with this). But besides that, if you need something that saves on space, is ergonomic and reliable, I will highly recommend this particular Trackpad no questions asked. Thank you, Harvey Norman.

Kensington Orbit Trackball with Scroll-Ring - My Secret Advantage
28 April 2020

When I first used the older version of the Kensington Orbit Trackball (KOT), 0 +20 years ago -I was seeing my chiropractor for mouse-related repetitive stress. I had tried my coworker's Logitec (LTB). That was too big for my hand and did not help me as using it required me to hunch-up my fingers to operate it. So, it did not eliminate the stress or the pain running up to my shoulder. Being a lefty - i.e., semi-ambidextrous in order to use tools designed for the other 90% - I had already tried using the mouse and LTB in each handed-orientation, resulting in pain for both arms. The Orbit provided almost immediate relief as I was now moving around the page using the middle part of my fingers rather than just the fingertips and a hunch-up hand. The Orbit provided almost immediate relief as I was now moving around the page using the middle part of my fingers rather than just the fingertips and a hunch-up hand. The rest of my arm now maintains a constant resting position. The addition of the scroll-ring is brilliant! In addition, the unit can sit in one spot and requires no real-estate to operate. (Goodbye mouse pad!) Yes, there's a slight learning curve, but it comes with the advantage, in my opinion, of the fact that non-users are often put off by the KOT, so they tend to leave your document or drawing alone. Another issue is that after a good amount of use, finger-oils travel from the ball to the lighted sections of the cradle. I have a soft toothbrush that I use occasionally to sweep out the oil and dust that collect there. The ball pops out of the cradle quite easily, pushing from the hole in the bottom. I'm sorry that inflation has increased the price. That's why I seriously considered reducing the rating by a star - I would surely have gone to 4-1/2 stars if that option existed. I grudgingly said it's a good value because the tool is truly excellent, and the previous buyer of this used KOT should not be penalized in any way for having had to pay the increased price.

My go-to trackball -- despite the warts
11 May 2022

I'm now on my third Kensington Orbit trackball. It really is my "go to" for this kind of device, although it does have some undesirable traits. The scroll-ring is super cool and, when not gummed up, is a great alternative to mouse scroll-wheels. It makes scrolling through long documents or web pages a breeze. It's too bad Kensington didn't design the scroll-ring to be easily removable so it can be cleaned, though. I damaged a previous Orbit trying to get the scroll-ring off for cleaning, although it can still be used if carefully pieced back together. I damaged a previous Orbit trying to get the scroll-ring off for cleaning, although it can still be used if carefully pieced back together. Even with very clean hands, fibers from carpet or clothing can get in there and stop the scroll-ring from turning freely. As with my previous Orbits, the mouse cursor will sometimes jump horizontally when the buttons are clicked. I'm not a violent user -- even with a delicate touch this happens. While not a huge deal, if you rely on your cursor staying where it belongs while clicking, you might want to invest in a more expensive unit. Another annoyance shared by my past Orbits is how loud the button click is. I know this sounds like a minor thing, but if you use your computer at night with others sleeping nearby, or if someone nearby is trying to concentrate on something and you do a lot of clicking (think gaming or artistic stuff), the Orbit is pretty loud. When I had a previous Orbit open for attempted cleaning, you can see that the palm-rest area is mostly hollow, so it resonates with each button click. I tried putting some foam in that area, and the click was quieter, but Kensington would make things more tolerable by putting some sort of sound-deadening material there -- even if it meant one or two dollars more for the price. As a family, we've purchased many of these Orbits. Unfortunately some of the units we've received do 'phantom' mouse clicks. What I mean is, if you click the button, sometimes it will do a double-click. Sometimes if your finger is on the button and you aren't actually clicking, it will send a single click. Not cool when a misplaced button click could mean deleting a file or choosing the wrong option on a lengthy income-tax form. I definitely recommend this trackball compared to competing brands (Logitech, for example), as others get dirty very quickly and feel scratchy most of the time. These Orbits _do_ have their quirks, but they aren't generally bad enough to stop using them.

Prefer the one where the ball is moved by the thumb
25 January 2022

Trackballs and mice are a very personal interface. So, my review is only for me and I would not claim that it makes much sense to assume you'll have the same preferences. That said, this was my first attempt to use a trackball where the fingers rotate the ball and the thumb is used for left clicking.Bottom line is I'm used to the other approach, where the thumb moves the ball. And I like that one better. Unfortunately, most manufacturers don't seem to want to produce the thumb for the ball configuration in a wired trackball.

Reliable and smooth.

I have two of these, one at home and one at work. They are roughly about 3 years apart in age, and I can attest that both of them feel the same. I've gotten used to using my right index finger to move the ball, right middle finger for the wheel, and the thumb for clicking. My wrist movement is minimal.I've found the wrist rest to be not very useful. At best I only use it when I'm not using the trackball. But I've not found a posture where I can rest the wrist there and still be able to comfortably move the ball and wheel. The ball feels a bit heavy and has some momentum. It's perhaps worth trying it out somewhere to see if it gives you the right balance of resistance and ease of movement.

This Product Is Almost Perfect

I needed an alternative to the mouse.I researched alternatives and down-selected to a trackball of some sort. Further research led me to Kensington products. I needed an alternative to the mouse.I researched alternatives and down-selected to a trackball of some sort. Further research led me to Kensington products. I am left handed and wanted a pointing device designed specifically for lefties. While Kensington has such a product, I ended up choosing this product (Orbit Trackball with Scroll Ring) instead. Why? Because I found enough reviews that praised this product and that stated that 'handed-ness' is not an issue. I thought the scroll ring might just be a gimmick but I purchased one anyway. As with my other purchases from B&H this product arrived a few days earlier than expected and in perfect condition.Windows 10 did not required any driver or other software in order for me to start using the product immediately.I soon learned that Windows Settings for pointing devices did not provide enough adjustment 'fineness' for me to fine adjust the pointer's response to the trackball. I decided to install Kensington's 'Works' application from their web site. Installation was uneventful and resulted in an almost invisible icon on the task bar. So far so good.KensingtonWorks provides enough fineness for me to get the pointer responding the way I need. Icing on the cake is that KensingtonWorks lets me create unique settings for sensitivity, acceleration, and trackball button actions for any application on my computer. I thought this was another gimmick but I was wrong.I now have unique settings for when I'm surfing the web (less sensitivity and acceleration) or quickly scrolling through a pdf file (more sens and accel because there's usually not much to click on in a pdf file). These per-app 'profiles' are just the ticket. I can surf with no frustration because I can easily position the cursor on a button, etc. I can quickly scan pdf files without over-spinning the scroll wheel. KensingtonWorks automatically switches between these profiles automatically. So instead of noticing that the pointer 'works differently' as I switch from app to app, the pointer works 'as I need it to', KensingtonWorks stays out of the way, does what it's designed to do, and let's me enjoy computing so much more. By the way, I have essential tremor and this product had made computing a lot easier for me.As for the scroll ring, well, after using it for awhile I don't know how anyone can use a trackball that doesn't have one.I have only to very minor complaints about the product, they're more like observations than complaints. Neither observations negatively affect the product's performance:1) The button switches are noisier than I'd like. Realize that I'm switching over from a Logitech M220 that has what I consider to be the quietest mouse buttons in the business.2) The scroll wheel fits into this trackball with a small amount of 'looseness' which is to be expected. My observation is that the scroll wheel occasionally rubs against the trackball body causing a very slight grinding sensation. Not enough to negatively affect scrolling but enough for me to know it's happening. I may see if a bit of fabric carefully positioned in just the right place may stop this from happening.Summary: I'd buy this product again in a heartbeat. It does what it says on the tin and is reasonably priced. Buy it for scroll wheel and never look back.

I have 3 of these, they are quite good, nearly great. Once you are accustomed to the convenience, nothing else really compares., as the button/scroll layout is convenient and effective, almost [but not quite] ideal. However, the side buttons on all of them lack any kind of crispness. they are kind of crunchy, a BIG detriment, and an obvious design flaw. Also the scroll is super sensitive, and software adjustment responses are either too slow or too quick. Hard to get right. Until something better comes along, they are my pointing device of choice. [something of a "Hobson's choice," but what the hey...] BK p.s.: shipping was excellent
