Gibson SG Modern - Blueberry Fade

First off. This Doesn’t sound like a typical Sg. I have a 17, 18, and 19 standard SG to compare. The Maple top (which is a little lacking aesthetically for the price point) gives it a much more articulate sound. Pick out every note of a full barre chord. The ebony board feels great under my fingers. The neck feels very similar to my 16 les Paul standard T. Hand wired electronics are great addition! The p90 sounds via the push pulls are great! I have the blueberry fade. Reminds me of denim jeans on the front. With the strap peg on the back of the upper horn it hangs horizontal to floor when let go. No neck dive. Neck is bound but no nibs on the edges of each side of the frets like the standards. I like the input jack on the edge of guitar vs the face like the ... MoreFirst off. I got a minor blemished blueberry fade Gibson SG Modern, the quality was very poor, the frets were long and sharp, sharp enough to cut your fingers if you were brave enough to try and play it, I wasn’t that brave. There was glue still on the ridge line and lots of miss match. I’m thinking they forgot to finish the one I received!I’ve wanted one of those guitars since I was a kid, I’m now 62.I actually couldn’t believe the poor craftsmanship! What a total disappointment. I did a side by side comparison to the Epiphone Les Paul Black Beauty 3 I have and I’d have to say that the difference in craftsmanship was very remarkable and very noticeable. After waiting 4 months on back order. The product shipped and As soon as I opened the case I instantly noticed a small hole on top of the neck where the 5th fret marker would be. It looks as though it was pushed in somehow. There was also a few small dings on the body. I feel as though I may have accidentally been sent an open box item because I don’t see any way possible that the guitar could pass inspection at the Gibson factory like that.This is my 3rd guitar from AMS and it is the first time I have had any problems. They were helpful to help me return for a replacement. Which should arrive shortly. Great value for the money.

I'll start with the bad- as seen in reviews I also experienced issues with pickup wiring but was able fix it myself, I also encountered the unexplained fretboard divot at the first fret. Beyond that though this guitar is impeccable! The 2021 model does not have the heavier locking tuners and Gibson moved the top strap button back to its normal position and so neck dive is significantly reduced if not completely eliminated. The back of the instrument is no longer solid black but is a translucent dark blue or black depending on your favorite model. The electronics are hand-wired and the pickups are excellent.

That said, this guitar will be your jam guitar or your recording guitar. Playing out unless you play out sitting down will be impossible.My guitar shipped with several issues that should have been caught at the factory. For example, the neck pickup had a ground short that made the neck pickup unusable. The neck also shrunk within weeks of purchase and I was left with very sharp fret ends.To be fair, Gibson did agree to an RMA to address these issues though I did have to cough up the $100 for shipping.This guitar is something you get only if you have money that you do not need as it doesn't present many opportunities to earn that money back for the gigging musician. The SG is a very popular guitar but you seldom ever see anyone ever playing one out live. Now you know why.

Rock and roll machine

OK, it's not perfect. But it's a bloody excellent SG that can sing you a lullaby or roar obscenities at you. It's a dream guitar for me and I love playing it.First of all, the sound. With coil split, you really get a wide variety of sounds, and they are all great. I actually spend most of my time using both pickups, with bridge split. Switch to split neck alone for more punk-rock sound. Add a Klon clone (with switch in middle position) for silky-smooth, driven sound. Or just play both pickups without any effects to let the burstbuckers shine. Pure humbucker goodness.The guitar looks absolutely stunning - the maple top in blue is amazing paired with chrome. Note that the way it looks makes the guitar slightly heavier than typical SGs (it's maple+mahogany glued ... MoreOK, it's not perfect. Note that the way it looks makes the guitar slightly heavier than typical SGs (it's maple+mahogany glued together, instead of just mahogany as is usual for SGs).The neck is really comfortable and playable. It takes a moment to adjust, it is 24 frets after all. Surprisingly though, I experienced almost no neck dive myself. I mostly play standing up and the leather strap was enough for me to counter the potential neck dive.I rate craftsmanship and materials a bit lower (4) because there were some tool marks on the binding on the neck that I really didn't like. The nut looks like it was cut hastily. There were some small flaws in the lacquer. Ebony is not top quality and will dye your fingers for the first few days.It came set up really well, but I did have to adjust the truss rod myself. It's not surprising, it came from a pretty dry warehouse to a bit more wet environment. If your guitar buzzes when it arrives, give it one or two days to adjust in the case, then adjust the truss rod a tiny bit (I needed 3/16 of a turn).Finally, the listing on the website is incorrect, this guitar does not come with locking tuners.All in all, an excellent instrument. For the price, I would expect craftsmanship to be a tiny bit better, but otherwise great.

SG Modern has Sustain for days!

Overall:Just got my SG Modern today, and this guitar sounds as gorgeous as it looks. I have an SG faded (with the cool moon inlays) and its an awesome guitar in its own rite, but the neck on the modern is a perfect fit for me. The pickups have a bright and beautiful tone' and the finish is beautiful (I got the black). I bought a Epiphone Sharoton Pro last year from zZounds, and once again the service is great (although Fedex sucks...). zZounds never disappoints.

Sounds and Plays Great

First of all, the specs section for this guitar on MF say it comes with Grover Rotomatic locking tuners. Wrong. The tuners on the guitar I received are not locking and they are not listed as locking on the Gibson website or some of MF's competitor's sites. That was disappointing. Was really hoping for locking tuners for a guitar in this price range.Second, Gibson's QA isn't the greatest. This guitar has blemishes/marks on the binding high on the neck around the 22-23rd fret area. Also missing a screw for the electronics cavity cover.Just so you know...the quality of the flame top varies greatly. I've seen some of these with barely any flame. Ultra low action possible and you can get the neck nearly straight with no buzzing. The neck just feels great and it's a joy to play. The pickups sound great and you have a huge amount of tonal options by splitting the pickups. Overall, I'd say this guitar is fairly bright but that's something I like. I find it a lot easier to warm up a guitar if it's too bright than to add brightness to a dark guitar. If it's too bright, just turn the tone down a little on the guitar, amp, pedal, etc.To sum it up, I'm happy with the purchase. Probably the best sounding and playing guitar I own. Just wish Gibson and MF paid more attention to the little details.
