I brought the Garmin Montana 700 to use on my hiking treks and ATV. The large display was a must for me and the ability to be viewable in bright sun light. Its nice to be able change mode types like walking, hiking, biking, off-road and others. Works well with GPX files. Lots of options for downloadable maps. One of my favories maps is the Garmin HuntView Parcel. It allows you to see property lines on the map. This is great so you don't unknowingly trespass onto someones land. Just a couple of cons - the interface is a little slow and somewhat outdated. Overall a great GPS!

I made good use of this in the first trip away and was able to go around a major thunderstorm cell, which is peace of mind when riding on a motorcycle, exposed to the elements. The only reason I ranked this as average is the User Interface. The unit itself in terms of capability is excellent, but the cost has to be questioned. I cannot see where a grand goes to be candid (not Johnny's fault either). Garmin may care to answer.

I bought this gps for the inreach capabilities. Having two young kids at home with mom the tracking feature worked great they could watch my progress across the country and then tell exactly where I was hunting. The maps for hunting are very minimal and don't trust national forest boundries ranchers get pretty upset.... The good news the Montana is onx chip capable and I will be ordering some for it in the future. I could text my wife and kids everyday to keep myself from being worried which makes for a lot better hunt. I carried the gps tracking for 12 days straight and the battery lasts a full 12hrs tracking. I'm sure it would last allot longer if not tracking. Seems like a pretty robust unit but I will be ordering the screen protectors for it. Only issue I had ... MoreI bought this gps for the inreach capabilities. I used the inverter in the truck to charge from 110v with a USB adapter and it charged fine. I also used a external battery pack to recharge with no issues. A good unit does allot more than I know how to use but the inreach is a priceless feature if you worry about your loved ones and would like that extra sense of security

So much so that I have it bookmarked now and frequently refer back to it when planning walks to make such that I have everything optimised for the route I have mapped out.The days of slogging up steep hills only to find a simple path on the other side when I get to the top, or getting soaked crossing streams when a bridge is only a short distance away, are now, thankfully, long gone.Looking back, I was a bit of an accident waiting to happen at times!PS - Caching Name is 2QuarterPints and I am happy to answer any caching specific questions anyone may have about the kit.PPS - I am not getting paid for this review! This is a good product and I am pleased with it. However I have a few minor issues. This unit replaces my Montana 600t which I use mostly in northern Maine while bird hunting. The 700i appealed to me for the larger screen, built-in satellite communication and dog tracking ability. The 700i is not as intuitive as the 600 and the home page seems cluttered but I'm getting used to it. The 700 uses different jargon. I was not impressed by the pre-loaded maps. The contour interval is only 100'!! This may be useful if hiking Everest but does not give much topography info for less mountainous terrain. I put in my Topo US card which has a 20' interval and shows many more minor trails. The dog tracking displays a compass arrow but not a map - unless I am just missing ... I have the windshield mount which is pricey but it will pronounce the turn and street names while driving. The mount itself is also very sturdy.Before this, I was using an iPhone and and it was helpless when there is no signal, lost position, the screen turn off, the brightness need to be turn on full and battery life would be terrible. Google map's trail coverage is not at all detailed, so it was definitely not working for me. If the map does not have it then you cannot route to there. Maps apps now are getting rather bloated and difficult, heavily relying on "cloud". To actually just drop some "pins" to get you out of the woods is a difficult task.Battery life has been fine. I don't have the satellite plan and turn off bluetooth and wifi, 30 second backlight timeout, it draws about 10% per hour. I added ANT+ speed and temperature sensors it doesn't seem to affect the battery life much. I bought an extra battery, it weights 93 grams with a very reasonable price. I would bringing that second battery if I ever feel I need to stay out that long. It also charges really fast at a 2A USB port, so a power pack can also be an option for extending battery life.It has the type of screen where the more sun is on it, the more clear it looks. With that said, sometimes in partial shade and the backlight off, it can be a bit hard to see.It's a Garmin, so the interface looks a bit outdated compared to a smart phone, but it's very easy to use once you get adapted to it and know where all the settings are and what they do. The supporting software is a bit of a mess, I recommend basecamp and Garmin connect. Don't mess with the phone apps. The more software you install you the more frustration you may run into (and this my experience with Garmin ecosystem in general).This is a specialist product for navigating in remote places, if you are expecting the UI experience like on a smart phone, you may be disappointed.

Having used the 700i for eight days, I have decided to move it on. Eight days of frustration to get it to keep imported tracks, to get it to provide turn-by-turn directions (it never did yet my Edge can do so with the same tracks), and calculation of routes was so slow I was actually getting to my destination via Google maps before the Garmin had it worked out if it did at all. For clarity, the 700i was updated with the latest firmware and maps before the trip. Garmin has some serious thinking to do with this ... Bought this unit, REI does not offer extended warranty for it, Not sure If You can get a spare battery for it from Garmin Site. You cant search a destination on this unit. Cumbersome software. I have the same sort of software interface on my Truck GPS and not very in favor of it. I am returning this unit and Instead I'll buy a spare Smart phone (for half price or less of this unit) with Long battery life and just use it for my navigation needs. I don't like using my main phone for navigation on long days of adventure out in the middle of nowhere, You wont need sim card or data plan for navigation on a spare smart phone.
